Church can bail Nigeria out of recession – Bakare

Church can bail Nigeria out of recession – Bakare

Pastor Tunde Bakare, said the current economic recession was an opportunity for the Church to bail out the country through God-inspired economic principles

Bakare, a Senior Pastor, Latter Rain Assembly, Lagos, stated this on Saturday in Abuja.

He spoke on the theme: “ The Church and Economic Recession , “ at the 14th anniversary celebration of Foursquare Gospel Church.

He said that the church had the ability to bail out nations, influence public policy through God-inspired economic principles and strategically position human resources to implement its principles.

Bakare, however, said that the church was yet to rise to the height mandated to it by destiny to bail out nations and to lead them to God’s will.

“ I am convinced that the recession currently being experienced in Nigeria is an opportunity for the Church.

“Therefore, I declare to you that the Scripture is about to be fulfilled in your hearing as God is stirring up the church to take responsibility for the destiny of Nigeria.

“ That is why we are gathered here today to talk about the church and economic recession.

“ If the church is also reeling from the impact of the recession, we must admit to ourselves that this is against the Scriptural pattern.

“ It is the best of times to take the tenets of the faith beyond the four walls of the church building to the marketplace and the policy roundtable, “ Bakare said.

He said that the nation’s economic recession was largely self-inflicted which could have been avoided, saying “unfortunately for Nigeria, our biggest boom experience fell into the hands of an unprepared leadership.“

A 51-year-old woman, Rose Edward, is in police net for allegedly buying a 2-month-old baby for N450,000.

Mr Murtala Mani, Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, disclosed this on Saturday in Uyo, while briefing newsmen.

“I sold the baby because of help; I don’t have anybody to help me. My father is late and my mother is sick and I don’t have anybody to help me,” Effiong said.

Mani assured Akwa Ibom people that the command would not relent in its effort to curb crime in the state.

He warned members of the public wishing to adopt children to follow due process.

Militancy: Buhari to meet Niger Delta leaders October 31

President Muhammadu Buhari will now meet with leaders of the Niger Delta region on October 31.

Buhari’s meeting with the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PNDF, an amalgamation of monarchs, leaders, groups and stakeholders of the oil rich region was initially slated for October 29 but was rescheduled to October 31 because the first date was Saturday.

The change in date was confirmed by both the leader of PNDF, former Federal Commissioner for Information, Chief Edwin Clark and Secretary of the Central Working Committee of PNDF, Mr. Ledum Mitee.

Vanguard quoted the Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, as saying he was actually looking at October 29 until it was found out that it was a Saturday.

He said, “It was actually a suggestion that the meeting could hold about that date, but having found out that 29 is a Saturday, you know it is not possible to drag the President for such a meeting on that day, the better day is Monday, October 31, so that is date.”

Clark had kicked against the intial meeting of the Federal Government with Stakehloders from the oil region, saying it was “contrary to the expectations of well meaning people.”

ICC ‘saddened’ by exit of S’Africa, Burundi, fears other African countries may leave

ICC ‘saddened’ by exit of S’Africa, Burundi, fears other African countries may leave

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has expressed regrets over the exits of Burundi and South Africa from the Rome Statute, which founded the court.

“The Republic of South Africa deposited its instrument of withdrawal from the Rome Statute (“Statute”), the founding treaty of the International Criminal Court (“ICC”), with the Secretary General of the United Nations,” ICC said in a statement.

“The decision comes in the wake of the withdrawal process recently initiated by Burundi.”

Sidiki Kaba, president of the Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, said: “Although withdrawing from a treaty is a sovereign act, I regret these decisions and invite South Africa and Burundi to reconsider their positions.

“I urge them to work together with other States in the fight against impunity, which often causes massive violations of human rights.

“The president of the assembly is concerned that this disturbing signal would open the way to other African States withdrawing from the Rome Statute, thus weakening the only permanent international criminal court in charge of prosecuting the most serious crimes that shock the conscience of humanity, namely genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and crimes of aggression.”

Kaba urged the international community to “remain united to face the enormous challenge of preventing the commission of such crimes, prosecuting the alleged perpetrators, whoever they are and wherever they are, to ensure peace, stability and security of our States”.

“The ICC needs the strong support of the international community and the cooperation of States to ensure its effectiveness and strengthen its credibility,” he said,  calling on all states parties to remain active members and other states to ratify the Rome Statute in order to ensure the right to universal justice to all victims of mass crimes.

Fayose playing with fire – Miyetti Allah warns over killing of cows

Fayose playing with fire – Miyetti Allah warns over killing of cows

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigerian (MACBAN) on Saturday said its attention has been drawn to the “unscrupulous action of Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State against our members who are bona fide citizens of the country.”

A statement by its spokesman, Baba Othman Ngelzarma, recalled that Fayose on Thursday inaugurated a vigilante group, Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshals (EGEM), popularly called ‘Anti-malu’ “in furtherance of his threat to banish our members from Ekiti State”.

It said Fayose unleashed the marshals “against our members whose herds of cattle had gone to a stream at Agon Bridge on Federal Polytechnic road between the time of 2:00 – 2:30 PM to quench their thirst on Friday 21st October 2016”.

Continuing, the statement sent to DAILY POST reads: “We have been reliably alerted an impeccable source in Ado- Ekiti that the Anti-maul vigilante group shot five cows and carted away with the meat but the herdsman was able to flee with the rest of his cattle.

“We are hereby constrained to implore the federal government through its security agencies to wade into this unprovoked and primitive aggression against our members, before this macabre incident develops into unquenchable inferno involving our members and Ekiti State government.

“No Cattle strayed into anybody’s farmland around that area in question. As such, the actions of the Anti-malu vigilante are not ant only provoking, but capable of creating uncontrollable scenarios whose ramification may go well beyond Ekiti State.

“As far as we know , Ekiti State is not an island of its own , but a State within the federal Republic of Nigeria and while the Governor is permitted to carry out actions geared towards protecting the interest of Ekiti State, such actions should follow the rule of law.

“We deplore this act of brigandage and call on Governor Ayodele Fayose to offer an unreserved apology to MACBAN, and equally set machinery in motion with a view to compensate our members who lost five cows in this primitive adventure.

“That the brutality of the Ekiti Grazing enforcement marshals (popularly known as Anti- malu) on herdsmen is even outside the time stipulated by that law (if the law exists at all).

“The federal overnment should therefore look into the actions and activities of this committee because we cannot fold our hands while the only means of survival of our members is taken away and destroyed.

“MACBAN has instructed victims of this aggression and its members nationwide to exercise maximum restrain while we work towards resolving this unfortunate incident through mature and civilized manners.

MACBAN further sympathized with the government of Kaduna State, Sokapu and entire Kaduna South inhabitants over the recent incident that had claimed so many lives as a result of a discord between our members and communities surrounding Godogodo environ.

“We see this act as an upsolute brutality exhibited by the perpetrators and condemnable in all its ramifications. We call on the security to do all it could to fish out and bring these criminals to book.”

Meanwhile, The Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Sokoto State Chapter, Alhaji Muhammadu Magaji, has warned its members not to graze their livestock on farm lands.

One of Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s firms is currently downsizing her workforce. No thanks to the biting economic recession.

Some employees at Dansa Foods Nig. Ltd, located off Lagos-Badagry expressway, has revealed that they are yet to be paid salaries.

The employees has lamented the inability of the company’s management to pay them for the past six months.

The company which produces Dansa juice and other goods has reportedly laid off more than half of the workforce.

Company sources have cited dwindling sales and high cost of production caused by high exchange rate of the Naira.

The company has suspended the production of Dansa juice and other products.

One employee reported that “We are only producing Mowa bottle water now.

“We are being owed six months. The company has refused to pay us so we are embarking on strike,” the worker added.

But the workers are not taking it kindly with the management of the company and have insisted that they must get their six months unpaid salaries.

To this end, the workers have embarked on strike to press home their demand.

One of the workers who did not want his name mentioned said he and his colleagues decided to go on strike to force the management to pay their salaries.

Efforts to speak with the management of the company proved unsuccessful as one of the managers refused to pick his phone calls.

Bloomberg in its latest Billionaire Index reports revealed that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, lost $ 5.4 billion in his fortune this year.

The loss was occasioned by the massive fall of the Naira as the Central Bank of Nigeria rations the dollar to stem huge capital outflow in the wake of Nigeria’s worst economic crisis.

Lagos to Impose Death Sentence on Kidnappers

Lagos to Impose Death Sentence on Kidnappers

Lagos State Governor, Akinwumi Ambode

In an effort to curb the high spate of kidnappings in the state, the Lagos State Government is set to proffer death sentence for kidnappers.

Lagos State Government may soon join the growing number of states including Edo, Ogun and Anambra that have imposed death sentence on kidnappers, Vanguard reports.

According to a private member bill sponsored by the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, “any person, who kidnaps, abducts, detains or captures or takes another person by any means or tricks with intent to demand ransom or do anything against his/her, will commit an offence, and liable to a conviction of death sentence.

The bill, which is titled: ‘A bill for a law to provide for the prohibition of the act of kidnapping and for other connected purposes,’ went through a public hearing in the State House of Assembly, yesterday. Attempt to kidnap was also criminalized under the bill and it was suggested that such a person would be committed to life imprisonment.

Also, the bill is against false representation to release a kidnapped or abducted person under Section 4,  and this attracts seven years imprisonment.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petition and LASIEC, whose committee handled the public hearing, Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, had earlier said in her welcome address that the Bill was necessary to curtail kidnapping in the state.

“We need laws to safeguard the citizens. We looked at the law on kidnapping and we felt that it should be amended to curb the crime,” she stated.

Goodluck allowed 55 persons to steal N1.3 trillion – Buhari

Goodluck allowed 55 persons to steal N1.3 trillion – Buhari

The Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, PACAC, has detailed how former president Goodluck and his aides stole N1.3trillion from the nation’s treasury.

PACAC said the said money was looted during the leadership of Goodluck Jonathan and his aides.

The committee made the shocking revelation during an interaction with civil society organizations in Abuja.

PACAC Executive Secretary, Professor Bolaji Owasanoye disclosed that the large sum of money was stolen by fifty-five persons.

Declaring that corruption brought Nigeria to her present situation, Owasanoye berated the former president for tolerating the vice.

According to Bolaji, “Jonathan’s tolerance of corruption was reflected in the sunset of activities of anti-corruption agencies.

“The nation witnessed an exponential increase in corruption and other vices under him.

“Insecurity escalated because of the massive embezzlement of $2billion through the Office of the NSA under Col. Sambo Dasuki.

“The problems in the downstream sector of the petroleum industry reached a zenith.

“Multi-billion dollars subsidy scams were perpetrated and President Jonathan just looked the other way.

“Jonathan’s legendary comment that stealing is not corruption underscored his perspective on corruption.

“That comment remains a watershed in the history of anti-corruption crusade in Nigeria.

“Under his watch, corruption brought Nigeria to its knees.

“N1.3trillion were stolen by only 55 people in seven years.

“That money could have provided 635.18 kilometers of roads and built 36 ultra-modern hospitals in each state.

“Former President Obasanjo established key anti-corruption agencies which led to high-profile convictions.

“Although his actions were not above board, the crusade against corruption went comatose from 2007 due to leadership deficit.

“Corruption is Nigeria’s greatest challenge and is directly associated with the current economic decline.

“Due to corruption, a few Nigerians were richer than their states.

“The thieves now used plea bargain and went scot free from the prosecution,” Bolaji said.

Buhari does not deserve a 2nd term, even his wife agrees

Buhari does not deserve a 2nd term, even his wife agrees

Dr. Junaid Mohammed, Second Republic member of the House Representatives in an interview with Saturday Sun analysed President Muhammadu Buhari's and decided that he does not deserve a second term come 2019.

He said, ''I think anybody who has been living in this country since the 29th of May 2015, till this date, knows that the lot of persons in this country has been very, very, very bad. It is also very clear that this government has not lived up to expectations of Nigerians.
Bribery and corruption are and have always been existential threat to the survival of this country, its progress and prosperity.

So, as for the re-energised fight against corruption, the government has gotten it right. But beyond that, other aspects for which the ruling party and government in power, made definite promises and commitment to Nigerians, have not come to pass. So as far as I am concerned, it is a record that I am not impressed about.

''Let me say it loud and clear that I am not a party to those who believe, for whatever reason that, Buhari is entitled to a second term, especially when that wishful thinking, has refused to take into cognizance his performance in office.

He has not performed, in my view, well enough, to be given a second term. This is being said, not only by me, but by also his own wife. And he cannot be closer to anybody, than his own wife.

Trump will accept election results, says daughter

Trump will accept election results, says daughter

Ivanka Trump

She is as calm and thoughtful as her father is strident and impetuous. She is Ivanka Trump, and the distance she has taken from her father Donald has earned her both the respect of Democrats and the head-scratching of analysts.

So the Republican candidate shocked the nation by saying he might not recognise the results of the presidential election if he loses? Ivanka, the model-turned-business-executive, insists “he’ll accept the outcome either way.”

So Donald Trump is caught bragging in lewd terms that he can do whatever he wants to women, then insists this was only “locker-room talk”? His daughter calls the comments “inappropriate and offensive” and admits that her father’s words can be “uncomfortable for us.”

Ivanka, soon to turn 35, is still clearly her father’s protegee. He has been unstinting in his praise for his glamorous offspring, a graduate of the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Trump counts on her to attract young and female voters.

In introducing her father at the Republican convention in July, Ivanka bragged about his “strength” and his “kindness and compassion.”

But she also knows when to step back.

Having grown up in the spotlight from an early age, at a time when her father’s extramarital affairs filled the tabloid press, Ivanka knows how to tend to her own image — and that of the clothing line that bears her name.

– Far from the Republican line –

Her Twitter and Instagram accounts help nourish her brand, celebrating women who juggle family life and work — with impeccable style — as does a book she plans to publish next year.

They portray an ideal family: her husband Jared Kushner, her “biggest fan,” for whom she converted to Judaism, and their three children, aged five, three and six months.

She has drawn on her family experiences to distinguish herself during the campaign, quietly urging her father to make promises far removed from Republican orthodoxy, such as a call for six weeks of paid maternity leave and for childcare tax deductions.

Beyond that, Ivanka insists, she does not delve deeply into politics, unlike her brothers and husband. “I am not the campaign mastermind, as people love to portray and speculate,” she recently told MSNBC television.

But if she has edged away from her father at times in an effort to “salvage her brand,” as The New Yorker magazine has suggested, the balancing act has not been easy.

“Her quest to float along empowered but unsullied beside her father throughout this increasingly ugly campaign has been getting harder and harder,” it added.

– A ‘together’ woman –

Her reserve, in any case, has earned her a certain degree of respect in the opposing camp.

When, at the end of their second televised debate on October 9, the moderator pressed Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to cite at least one quality in their opponent, Clinton said, without hesitation: “His children are incredibly devoted and able.”

It was an indirect homage to Ivanka, who is a long-standing friend of Chelsea Clinton, the candidate’s daughter.

Even the caustic and strongly left-leaning film director Michael Moore, who just released a film strongly supportive of Clinton, seems to appreciate the young Trump. In an open letter posted on his website, he describes her as a “brilliant” and “very smart and together woman” — the only person capable, he said, of intervening to stop her father’s quixotic campaign.

For Sam Abrams, a political scientist at Sarah Lawrence College and the conservative Hoover Institution, “When you listen to her… she’s not engaged in the mud-slinging the way the others are; she is trying to be more professional, more mature.”

By taking some distance from her father’s positions, she has given herself “quite a few options” for the future, he said.

That future could be in television — she worked on her father’s reality television program “The Apprentice” — or in politics, where Abrams said she could represent values her father could not.

“The question is, what does she want to do? Can she separate herself more from her father? Can she do it on her own? Does she want to?” the analyst said.

If Donald Trump loses in November as badly as some polls predict, Abrams added, the Republican Party may be in for a prolonged period of self-examination over “what it is and what it stands for.”

So “there is no rush,” he said. “Hillary is the living proof that you can be at it for years.”

RMD: I hope ‘Oloibiri’ would shed light on our problems in Niger Delta

Richard Mofe-Damijo says ‘Oloibiri, a movie about militancy and the plight of residents of crude oil rich villages, was produced to shed light on the problems of the Niger Delta region.

The leading actor hopes that the meaning and message of the movie would not be lost on the watching audience and key stakeholders who can make real change.

In the movie, RMD played a role of Gunpowder, a militant who resorted to violence as a means of defending his people.

While speaking to TheCable Lifestyle at the premiere on Thursday at the Muson Centre, he said: “I just hope that this would spotlight our problems in the area and get a lot of people to the negotiating table.

“I didn’t consider my part in the movie evil, I considered him the modern day Robinhood.”

“I don’t know if the message will be passed. Our work is just to highlight what is needed to be highlighted and hopefully with the film, a lot of people will discuss it,” said the 55-year old Delta indigene.

A few weeks ago, the former commissioner of culture and tourism said he had to get emaciated to play the role of Gunpowder.

“I lost weight for the movie. At the time the movie was shot, I had to lose 20kg. Before we began to shoot the movie, I was weighing 120kg but by the time we were shooting the movie, I weighed about 98kg.”

An extremely rare skin disorder characterised by abnormal scaling and shedding of the skin has plagued two siblings, giving doctors and family a cause to worry.

Disturbing pictures show the daily ordeal of a young brother and sister in India as they battle with a rare skin disease that leaves them with scales all over their body.

Sayali Kapase, 13, and her brother Siddhant Kapase, 11, were pictured at the Dr. DY Patil Medical College and Research Centre in Maharashtra, India, as they were treated for 'Lamellar Ichthyosis'.

According to DailyMail, their condition means they have scales all over their body and dried skin that keeps peeling off.

The pair's mother Sarika Kapase, 31, and father Santosh Ramchandra Kapase, 39, attended the hospital with them along with their nine-month-old daughter Manasvi.

Both siblings have to apply medicated oil at least three times a day as well as medicated soaps, shampoos, lotions, and creams to keep their skin in tolerable condition.

It is a rare skin disorder that appears at birth and remains with suffers for the rest of their lives, with the child even born encased in a collodion membrane that sheds within 10-14 days.

The shedding of the membrane reveals generalized scaling of skin that causes varying degrees of redness and eventually scales.

This is an extremely rare skin disorder characterised by abnormal scaling and shedding of the skin. It is estimated to occur in one out of 600,000 births. Most affected individuals will be born as a 'collodion baby', states the Ichthyosis Support Group.

'The skin appears to have large plate-like scales which often are rather dark or brownish in colour. The scaling often involves all of the skin although the face may show milder changes,' the group said.

'The condition usually appears in the first few days of life, lasts lifelong and can be very severe.

'It is not contagious. Lamellar ichthyosis is usually inherited in an "autosomal recessive" fashion. This means that each parent has normal skin but is a carrier for one single abnormal gene that cause it.'

One complication caused by the disease is overheating where the scaling of the skin prevents normal sweating so hot weather or vigorous exercise can cause problems.

If left untreated, the skin of the palms may also become thickened, tight and prevent normal bending and straightening of the fingers.
