I didn’t initiate probe against Chime - Ugwuanyi

I didn't initiate probe against Chime – Ugwuanyi

Chime

Enugu State Governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Wednesday dismissed a media report accusing him of being behind the on-going probe of some road contracts initiated by his predecessor, Barr. Sullivan Chime.
The Enugu State House of Assembly had on Tuesday summoned some contractors over road and some other capital projects handled by Chime's administration.

Consequently, an online medium had accused the Governor of hiding under the House to probe Chime.
However, in a press statement made available to journalists in Enugu yesterday, by Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, he described the news report entitled "Enugu Governor Begins Probe Of Predecessor, Godfather", as a huge deception of the mass- reader.

Abugu said it was "a deliberate attempt to create and stoke the embers of a non-existent rift among political leaders in Enugu state which currently enjoys visible peace, harmony and progressive actions midwifed by the administration of the state governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

said news report to scream an alleged probe of the former governor of the state by the incumbent governor when the body of the story contains nothing about any action of the governor in that regard but purely legislative oversight functions of the Enugu state House of Assembly.

"Any discerning mind which goes through the report would naturally ask, 'whither the role or hand of the state governor in the actions of the state assembly which decided to look into executions of some contracts in the state'?

"At the moment, Governor Ugwuanyi is engrossed in several salvage actions of his administration aimed at raising the bar of performance in all spheres of governance.

"His is an administration embedded in momentous actions involving flag-off of development projects, continuous engagements with various stakeholder groups, business groups with a view to ensuring that no stone is left unturned in the drive to achieve all aspects of the four-point agenda of the government."

He added that "The governor being a true democrat, and having served his people for a decade and two years as a dependable National Assembly member, would not use his present office to meddle in the affairs of the legislative arm of government in Enugu state.

"In fact, the state assembly goes about its constitutional duties without any form of encumbrance by the executive arm."

Abugu further stated that it was grossly unfair for the news medium "to skew its interpretation of the constitutional function of the state assembly to mean that Governor Ugwuanyi, in its own words, 'Begins Probe of Predecessor, Godfather'.

"The general atmosphere of cordiality in Enugu's political environment since the governor assumed office on May 29 is a direct result of his personal and official efforts to galvanize all leaders of the state into working for the general well-being of the people because he believes, and it is truly so, that his desired development for the state can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and harmony among the critical stakeholders."

Serena Williams writes touching tribute to her late dog

Today really is hard for me. My special friend in which I got at 17 (2 weeks before I won my very first Grand Slam) left me today. She was 16 years young and up until a few days ago was still sprinting. Her poor body gave out this morning and she had a way of telling me it was time for me to be brave and let her go. With my dad by my side we were able to say a loving goodbye. She was with me from 1999 until today and I miss her so much. I got out of the shower this afternoon and she was not there to lick my leg as she always did everyday to remind me how much she loved me. I feel so lucky to have such a special friend. Give your dog, cat, pet a big hug. ‪#‎breakingheart‬ ‪#‎bff‬ Jackie Baila Pete Williams I will miss you and your memory will live forever.

Your comment is damaging to Nigeria - Rep Obasa blasts Dalong for saying youths 'corrupt'

Your comment damaging to Nigeria – Rep Obasa blasts Dalong for saying youths 'corrupt'

The lawmaker representing Ojo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Obasa (PDP) has urged the newly appointed Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalong to stop attacking Nigerian youths.

Dalong, at an event on Tuesday blamed the escalating cases of corruption on the youths, accusing them of submitting themselves to some persons who acquired their wealth through questionable means.

However, in a statement on Thursday, Obasa, an active community youth leader prior to his emergence as a lawmaker, advised Dalong to be careful with his use of words because such illusion can destroy the hardworking image of the Nigerian youth across the globe.

The lawmaker counselled Dalong to work diligently and invest more time in building good image for the future leaders while in office.

The statement reads "For the past five years, the entertainment sector dominated by the progressive Nigerian Youths has contributed 1.2 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"In sports, youths are actively engaged and doing excellently well as evident in Wellington Jighere, the new world champion in Scrabble, Nigeria's Golden Eaglets U-17 World Cup triumph, among others.

"With the dwindling economy, I implore the Honorable Minister to come up with policies that will strengthen the sectors dominated by Nigerian Youth in order to create more job opportunities for the timid youths and alleviate poverty in the land."

However, Obasa appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to reward the Nigeria's U-17 team as a matter of "urgency and necessity".

"In a country like ours, the game of football is a uniting factor, it is a game that strengthens unity beyond religion and ethnic lines," he said.

"At a time the country is facing a lot of challenges ranging from insecurity, secession and more, it will be morally right, if the President can use the Golden Eaglets as an example to Nigerian Youths that there is dignity in labour", he added.

Desribing the players as "heroes of our time", Obasa further appealed to multinational companies and individuals with affluence reward the young chaps for doing the nation proud.

FG to amend charges against Orubebe

FG to amend charges against Orubebe
Godsday Orubebe

The Federal Government on Thursday asked for permission of the Code of Conduct Tribunal to amend charges against former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godsday Orubebe.

Orubebe is standing trial before the tribunal on charges of false declaration of assets and collection of bribe on awarded contract.
At the resumed hearing of the trial, prosecution counsel, Mr Peter Danladi, orally applied for the amendment of the earlier charges against the defendant.

He relied on section 216 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 to back his request for amendment of the charges.
“The section states that a court may permit an alteration or amendment to a charge or framing of a new charge at a time before judgment is pronounced’’, he said.

The defense counsel, Mr Selekeowei Larry (SAN), however, objected to the prayer of the prosecution.

Larry argued that a request for amendment of charges has to come by way of written motion and not oral application as made by the prosecution.
Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Danladi Umar, ruled that the request must be made formally to enable the Defense the opportunity to respond to the application.

The tribunal adjourned to Jan. 27 for continuation of trial.

Meet the mums who breastfeed each other's children

Meet the mums who breastfeed each other's children

Two young mothers have revealed how they breastfeed each other's children - and are now calling on others to do the same.

Stefani Tatavitto and Chrystal Klein claim they can see nothing wrong in feeding the other mother's children from their breasts and that it helps the youngsters grow.

Stefani, 23, regularly feeds both her own two-year-old son and her friend Chrystal's, also 23, 19-month-old daughter while her pal works at a factory.

The friends, from Connecticut, USA, - who met on Facebook five years ago - started their unusual arrangement when Chrystal's daughter, Ariana, was just ten months old.

However, the shared nursing does cause problems for Stefani's son Gage, who lashes out in jealousy when Ariana nurses from his mum.

Neither women's partners are fazed by the wet nursing and although Stefani nurses Ariana in public, passersby are oblivious to the fact that the child is not her own.
Stefani, who also has a four-year-old son, Noah, said:
"I don't think it's shocking to nurse another woman's child - breastfeeding is natural.
"I think it helps Ariana, it keeps her calm and helps her when she's teething. It's a big comfort and helps keep her settled. If anyone has a problem with it I have not nice words to say to them. You drink breast milk from animals, it's not that weird to drink breast milk from another human." Because of Stefani wet nursing I don't need to pump milk for my daughter or worry about her not having any milk.
"It also makes me feel better to know that my daughter still has that comfort even while I am away from her."
"I don't care what anyone else has to say - we do what's best for our families."
Meet the mums who breastfeed each other's children

Now Stefani breastfeeds Ariana up to six times a week, but Chrystal insists she isn't worried about her friend forming a stronger bond with a daughter than she has.

Stefani, who also has a four-year-old son, Noah, said:
"I don't think it's shocking to nurse another woman's child - breastfeeding is natural.

"I think it helps Ariana, it keeps her calm and helps her when she's teething. It's a big comfort and helps keep her settled.
And despite the bond that comes with breastfeeding, Chrystal isn't worried about Ariana becoming overly close to her friend.

Meet the mums who breastfeed each other's children

Chrystal said:
"I am not worried about my daughter becoming too attached to Stefani. I believe my daughter realises that I'm mommy and Stefani is just offering her milk. Whenever we are both with her and she wants milk, typically she will ask me to nurse. I would say there are no drawbacks. I only see positive from this."
So far Stefani and Chrystal haven't received any criticism for their arrangement, but they realise that some will regard cross-feeding as controversial.

Chrystal said:
"My family and friends don't know that much about our wet nursing arrangements.

"When it comes to breastfeeding though my family is supportive with every decision I make.

Archbishop of Canterbury Admits Paris Attacks Made him Doubt the Presence of God

Archbishop of Canterbury Admits Paris Attacks Made him Doubt the Presence of God

Justin Welby has admitted that the terrorist attacks in Paris made him doubt the presence of God.

According to the Archbishop of Canterbury, he was left asking why the attacks happened and where God was when the militant jihadis struck.

He said he reacted with 'profound sadness' at the events, particularly as he and his wife had lived in Paris when he was an oil executive.

Asked if these attacks had caused him to doubt where God was, he said: 'Oh gosh, yes,' and admitted it put a 'chink in his armour'.

Appearing on Songs Of Praise, which will be broadcast on BBC 1 this evening, he said:'Saturday morning, I was out and as I was walking I was praying and saying: "God, why – why is this happening?
"Where are you in all this?" And then engaging and talking to God. Yes, I doubt.'
But he added that he nevertheless had faith that God was alongside people in their suffering and pain.

When asked what his reaction was to the attacks on the French capital, he said:
'Like everyone else – first shock and horror and then a profound sadness. And, in my family's case, that is added to because my wife and I lived in Paris for five years.
'It was one of the happiest places we have lived and to think of a place of such celebration of life seeing such suffering is utterly heart-breaking.'
But he warned against a knee-jerk military response, saying:
'Two injustices do not make justice.
'If we start randomly killing those who have not done wrong, that is not going to provide solutions. So governments have to be the means of justice.
The Bible tells us that they are put there by God with the sword for justice, but they also have to lead us into a place where peace can be established."
The Archbishop said the way Islamic State terrorists had distorted their faith to the extent they believe they are glorifying their God is 'one of the most desperate aspects of our world today.'
He said:
'Religion is so powerful in the way humans behave that it has always been a tool used by the wicked to twist people into doing what they want them to do.
But just because someone believes something deeply wrong does not mean that they are right in some way because they put God in it. The perversion of faith is one of the most desperate aspects of our world today.'
The Archbishop first admitted last year that there were times when he questioned whether God existed.

Nigerian doctor charged with corruption in South Africa

Nigerian doctor charged with corruption in South Africa

A Nigerian doctor named Anthony Nwafor, has been accused of corruption and illegal immigration by the Department of Home Affairs in South Africa. Nwafor, a family physician was arrested two weeks ago with 14 of his family's passports. The department of Home affairs in its report said Nwafor was arrested for unlawfully being in possession of those passports which were South African and Nigerian and had tried to bribe an officer investigating him with 50,000 rand.

Nigerian doctor charged with corruption in South Africa

Nwafor's wife, Amara, who is a practicing pharmacist, was initially arrested alongside her husband, but was later released as charges against her were dropped while her Nigerian passport is yet to be released.

Amara Nwafor has condemned the allegations against her husband,
"I see what is going on here as xenophobic prosecution and I also see it as white collar xenophobia," she said. Nwafor subsequently appeared at a bail hearing in Limpopo province over charges level against him.

In cross-examining, the prosecuting counsel questioned the different spelling of the doctor's name on his documents seized and prayed the court not to grant him bail, stressing that the court was not sure who it was releasing.

Nwafor's legal representative believed that the errors in the spelling of his client's name by the department should not cost him a denied bail, insisting that his identity cannot be questioned in a country where he studied and has practiced for 14 years. The presiding judge adjourned the case and asked for more time to study the arguments of both parties and the evidences presented to him.

21 members of a Nigerian criminal organisation arrested in a raid by Barcelona Police for forcing Nigerian women into prostitution

On Monday, Nov. 16, Catalan regional police launched a large-scale raid against human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women in Barcelona, Spain. 21 people, 15 men and 6 women, tall Nigerians, were arrested in the early morning operation for forcing Nigerian women into prostitution. Above is one of the arrested Nigerians

The Central Unit against Human Trafficking disclosed that the suspects are part of a criminal organisation, known as "Supreme Eiye Confraternity", that has forced more than one hundred women into prostitution since the beginning of 2014.

Investigators believe the group may have exploited dozens of women, many of whom were charged large sum of money to be brought to Spain from Africa with the promise of a job and a better life. The women, instead were forced into prostitution to repay their debts to the human trafficking ring.

The group was born in university circles in Nigeria in the 90s, and gradually became a feared criminal organisation, El País newspaper reports. "We have taken action against the local branch of this organisation, but also against some international members here." a police spokesman added.

Officers are also searching 20 properties in Barcelona, Terrassa, Sabadell and several other Catalan towns and cities. According to El Pais, this is not the first time that the Catalan police have acted against the Supreme Eiye Confraternity. In November 2011, several members were arrested on similar charges.
