APGA crisis deepens as party suspends Okwu

APGA crisis deepens as party suspends Okwu

THE recent reconciliatory moves embarked upon by the All Progressive Grand Alliance party (APGA) suffered a major setback yesterday following the suspension of the former factional National Chairman of the party, Chief Maxi Okwu by the National Stakeholders Forum of the party.

Announcing this yesterday in Awka, the Anambra State capital, the APGA National Stakeholders Forum, a-decision making body of the party, equally and unanimously dissociated themselves from Okwu’s reconciliatory move, because according to them, Okwu failed to consult the relevant stakeholders describing his actions as self serving.

The APGA National Stakeholders Forum arrived at the decision in a communiqué written and signed by 12 of its distinguished members, such as Sadeeq I. Masalla, Chairman; Comrade Tony Edochie, High Chief Uche Njoku; Comrade Opara Ferguson; Ohamohi C.C; Sunday Nwachukwu; Okuli Jude Ejike; Hon. E.A. Ashonnbi; Chief Dickson Ogu; Hon. Barr. E.S Chijioke; Chief Sunday Obasahon; and Prince Gbenda Ateni.

The Forum, however, reaffirmed their unalloyed support and confidence to its National Leader, Chief Hon. Sylvester Nwobu-Alor, and governorship aspirant, Chief (Dr.) Chike Obidigbo for their sincere commitments towards the unity of APGA and the overall interest of the nation.

UK Govt Grants Diaspora Nigerians Right To Protest Enugu Massacre

UK Govt Grants Diaspora Nigerians Right To Protest Enugu Massacre

The British government has granted Nigerians resident in the United Kingdom permission to go ahead with their planned protest against President Muhammadu Buhari for his failures to rein in murderous activities of the Fulanis herdsmen, a statement from the organisers say.

In a press statement sent to our correspondent by the head of the group, Benjamin Amaechi, the protest would also illustrate the grave danger of the Fulani herdsmen and internationalise the activities of the herdsmen whose activities have led to thousands of deaths since President Buhari took over eleven months ago, the statement pointed out.

The organisers  announced that “Westminster City (the seat of the British Government) has given Permission to Nigerians living in the UK to organise a mass protest against the ongoing Fulani Herdsmen Massacre in Nigeria.”
The world’s second most dangerous terrorist group has been ravaging parts of the country especially the North Central and South East killed several dozens in Enugu State few days ago.

Reports say the locals have begun organising vigilance groups to rout the herdsmen from the South East amid compromising attitude from government.
The protest organisers urged Nigerians to join the “global outreach, London Protest, to stop the bloodthirsty Fulani Herdsmen ravaging Nigeria, which the government has accepted as a norm.”

The group said procession would start from the Nigeria High Commission and terminate at the UK Parliament Building.
This is the first time such massive protests would be organised and would draw international attention to government’s silence on the activities of the herdsmen.

The herdsmen are said to be armed with dangerous weapons like AK-47, which they use freely on their host communities.

The organisers said the protest, which would take place on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 by 11:00a.m to 1p.m, was to ensure international attention is paid to the nefarious activities and government’s apparent compromise, and essentially to make Nigeria a safe and better place through international help to curb the atrocities of the herdsmen.

The group “will target prominent British leaders to convey their message including the Queen of England, the British Prime Minister and all British Members of Parliament.

“Also, international media organisations such as the BBC, CNN, AlJazeera ,VOA, FoxTv, SkyTV, Ben TV, Evening Standard, Guardian UK and others have indicated interest to cover the protest in London on May 3,2016,” the statement added.

In a related development, the Izu Umunna Cultural Association, an Igbo cultural  organization has expressed  dismay at the level of brigandage and carnage being unleashed on the people of South East by Fulani herdsmen.
The group condemned the apparent poor response of security agencies to these atrocities and the near complicit endorsement exhibited by the Federal Government.

The Igbo group in a press statement issued in Jos on Friday by its Secretary-General, Dr. Ugo Ihekuna, respectively alleged that no fewer than 200 innocent people have been mowed down by the rampaging marauders with equal number of houses destroyed and farmlands completely destroyed.

According to them,”These actions, coming at a time the National Assembly has begun deliberations on the National Grazing Reserves Commission, is apparently one of the grand designs to alienate and appropriate lands in the South East. The strategy is to use Fulani herdsmen to coerce local farmers by ferocious force of arms to relinquish part of their farmland for grazing of their livestock as panacea for peace”, the group lamented.

Izu Umunna said it was concerned that the scenario as being played out in the legislature was to use the instrument of constitutional amendment to carve out large parts of land in the Middle Belt and Southern Nigeria and hand over to Fulani herdsmen.

With time, the Fulani will demand for the establishment of their chiefdom as they are doing in Kachia in Kaduna State where grazing reserve was carved out for them by the government of Northern Nigeria in the early 1960s..

What  is happening, the group said, must send a strong signal to the government and people of the South East that having devastated their lands through the activities of the Boko Haram, which had created deserts in almost the entire length and breadth of North East, the next alternative is to turn to the South East where there is lush green vegetation for grazing.

Gunmen kidnap paramount ruler’s pregnant wife in Akwa Ibom

Gunmen kidnap paramount ruler’s pregnant wife in Akwa Ibom

No fewer than 10 unknown gunmen on Friday night kidnapped the pregnant wife of Ubong Assam, the paramount ruler of Esit Eket in Akwa Ibom.

The gunmen also abducted the four children of the traditional ruler.

Chief Asuquo Abia, the Secretary, Traditional Rulers Council, Esit Eket, told NAN in Esit Eket on Saturday that the gunmen invaded the palace of the paramount ruler in the wee hours of Friday morning.

Abia, who is also the Village Head of Afaha Akpenedi, said the gunmen shot sporadically for over five hours from 1.30 a.m. to 6 a.m.

“The gunmen destroyed part of the palace with dynamites and broke into all the rooms and carted away valuables,’’ he said.
He said the gunmen arrived at the palace on Thursday claiming to be policemen from Abuja on an investigation.

“They later came back the next day around 1.30 a.m. and shot sporadically till 6 a.m. in the morning,’’ Abia said.

Also, a family member, Mr Norbert Assam, said that seven people wounded in the incident were hospitalised in the state.

He said that the paramount ruler’s wife was eight months pregnant when she was kidnapped.

Assam also said that the gunmen escaped the scene with their victims in the paramount ruler’s Jeep.

“They came in two vehicles, a white Hilux van and a sports utility vehicle; they met the paramount ruler and said they came from Abuja to investigate a matter of attempted murder on the life of the monarch.

“We saw two masked men in the Hilux van who they claimed were suspects of the attempted murder case, but they did not allow us to go near the vehicles,’’ Assam said.

He said that gunmen came from the creeks in Esit Eket Local Government Area, adding that they ransacked the palace and took away valuables and money.
Reacting to the incident, the Police Public Relation Officer in Akwa Ibom, ASP. Cordelia Nwawe, said the command was yet to receive a report on the kidnap from the Divisional Police Officer in the area.

Nwawe said that the family had also not intimated the command of the incident, but added that the police was committed to safety of life and property in the area.
NAN reports that this is the second time in two years that unknown gunmen are attacking the palace of the paramount ruler.

I won’t marry any of mybabymamas, says Flavour

Flavour N’abania

Celebrated highlife musician, Flavour N’abania, has probably broken the hearts of his two babymamas, Sandra Okagbue and Anna Banner, who may be hoping to settle down with the singer someday, following his interview with HipTV where he stated he would not be getting married to any of his Babymamas, adding that  for someone like him, marriage would be a huge distraction and that most artistes at their prime in their trade are bound to crash once they get married.

“Marriage is not a thing that you just go into. This music business is a serious business. My own opinion, I think if you are in the peak of your career, you don’t need any distraction.

So for now, I think marriage could be a distraction for me because it is a whole big institution that when you go in, you have to be fully prepared to know what you are getting into,” he said.

“And right now, looking at everything, its not so easy for me now….and most of my colleagues, whenever they get married, everything starts crashing down. I keep asking people, have you ever seen a successful musician having a good home and a good career? Its not going to be easy. If you know one, just tell me” he added.

Buhari’s economic policies “opaque, archaic” – Ezekwesili

Buhari’s economic policies “opaque, archaic” – Ezekwesili

Oby Ezekwesili, former VP World Bank.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s current economic policies are similar to those he promulgated during the military regime he led in the 1980s, a former Minister of Education and social critic, Oby Ezekwesili, has said.

Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari’s “archaic” and “opaque” economic principles are not only encouraging massive corruption and abuse of power, but also hurting the poor they were intended to help.

Mrs. Ezekwesili said this at The Platform, a public policy forum that is currently underway in Abuja.

“During the first coming of this our new president, a command and control economic system was adopted.

“During that era, inflation spiralled. During that era, jobs were lost. During that era, the economic growth level dipped,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said. “That era wasn’t the best of eras in economic progress.”

“What did not work in 1984 cannot possibly be a solution in a global economy that’s much more integrated.”

Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari was rehashing the same “command and control” approach towards economic issues which has left the country’s economic indices worse off since he assumed office almost year ago.

“In over one year, the president is still holding to the premise that command and control is the only way out,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said. “In a year we have lost the single digits inflation status we maintained in past administrations.”

Foramfera
Mrs. Ezekwesili said Mr. Buhari’s distortion of foreign exchange system has left the poor it was intended to support even worse off.

“The president comes into this economic philosophy on the premise that he does not want the poor to suffer. I can relate to that, a leader must not allow the poor to suffer, especially a leader who knows that most of his votes came not from the elite but from the poor.”

“The problem though is that the intention and the outcome are diverged.

“The weakest and the most vulnerable suffer the impact of inflation the most. Enormous power is being abused as a result of opaque economic policies.

“Companies are suddenly finding themselves unable to produce because they’re unable to access foreign exchange,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said.

Mrs. Ezekwesili, therefore, urged Mr. Buhari to sit down with his administration officials and reconsider the impact his polices have had on the nation’s economy, quoting an American parlance that says if something is not broken there’s no need fixing it”.

“Mr. President should sit with his team and look at the economic evidence that speaks loudly. It’s time to sit back and review the well-intended idea of command and control economic principle.

“He should do what the Americans say that if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it,” Mrs. Ezekwesili said.

Budget: N’Assembly to return corrected details to Buhari Saturday

Budget: N’Assembly to return corrected details to Buhari Saturday

National Assembly Complex

The reconciliation committee of the National Assembly on the 2016 budget may return the corrected details of the appropriation bill to President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday (today), findings revealed on Friday.

The committee is chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Suleiman Lasun.

A second committee from the side of the executive is chaired by the Minister of Budget and National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma.

Investigations by Saturday PUNCH revealed that the two committees would meet, fine-tune the details of the budget and forward it to Buhari possibly today.

The President and the leadership of the National Assembly had agreed to set up the committees after a brief meeting on Wednesday night in Abuja to reconcile the “grey areas” in the N6.06tn budget.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, as well as the principal officers of both chambers attended the meeting, which was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Some senior officials of the National Assembly confided in Saturday PUNCH on Friday that the members of the Lasun committee worked all night on Thursday in a bid to speed up the reworking of the budget’s details.

“The Deputy Speaker and the other committee members slept at the secretariat on Thursday.

“They will likely sleep there today again (Friday) because their plan is to ensure that the budget details, as corrected, will reach Mr. President on Saturday,” one of the officials stated.

It was gathered that some members of the Senate and House Committees on Appropriations, which created the “distortions” in the first place, marveled at the work pace of the reconciliation committee.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that among the grey areas, which would now be deleted from the budget, were the N40bn lawmakers added to the original vote for zonal intervention projects.

Buhari initially proposed N60bn for the projects, but the lawmakers jacked it up to N100bn with an inflated N40bn.

Similarly, projects worth over N4bn, which the Chairman, House Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin, allegedly earmarked for his constituency in Kano State without the knowledge of his colleagues, would be removed from the details.

Saturday PUNCH also gathered that Buhari opposed all cuts in his original projections that were up to 40 per cent.

A source said, “The President wants the original figures retained because he feels the cuts will affect the implementation of the projects the funds were meant to serve.

“Any cut that is up to 40 per cent will be reduced. Of course, this will still not affect the overall budget size of N6.06tn.

“What will happen is that we will juggle round the details and adjust the smaller figures but still retain the N6.06tn.

“Distortions that crept into the budget will be removed to get the document ready for Presidential assent hopefully by Tuesday, next week.”

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, confirmed that it was the expectation of the National Assembly that the work would be “done with over the weekend.”

He added that the National Assembly hoped that the budget controversy would be resolved after May 1.

Chaos in Warri After Soldier Kills Pregnant Woman

Chaos in Warri After Soldier Kills Pregnant Woman

Chaos erupted this morning in Warri, Delta State after a heartless soldier allegedly killed a pregnant woman after hitting her with his rifle.

A pregnant woman hit with the bayonet of a rifle by an angry soldier died this morning at Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area in Delta State.

According the Vanguard, the incident happened at 7.45 am at a military checkpoint on Jakpa Junction, causing an irate mob to set a military vehicle ablaze. The soldiers on duty at the checkpoint fled the scene soon after they observed that the woman, who initially slumped, had died.

As at the time of this report, there was tension in the area, while the police have deployed men to maintain peace. Our source said the soldiers stopped the woman and the tricycle rider conveying her at the checkpoint for purportedly violating the no movement order during today’s Environmental Sanitation in the state.

The woman pleaded with the soldiers that she was rushing to attend a marriage ceremony, but when the soldiers refused all entreaties, the tricycle rider suspecting riskily escaped.

His bold getaway incensed one of the soldiers, who visited her anger on the woman by wrathfully hitting her stomach with the bayonet of his gun, ripping her stomach in the process.

Thousands Flock to Church to See Painting of St John the Baptist 'Miraculously' Sweat (Photos)

Thousands Flock to Church to See Painting of St John the Baptist 'Miraculously' Sweat

Thousands have been flocking to witness the 'sweating' St John the Baptist painting

A painting of St John the Baptist has been seeping oil at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Homer Glen, Illinois which many has testified has healed them of their various diseases.

Pilgrims to a Greek Orthodox church outside Chicago have reported miraculous healings which they believe have been caused by an oil seeping out of a painting of St John the Baptist.

Since July, the painting at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Homer Glen, Illinois has been 'sweating' an oil parishioners believe is myrrh - one of the gifts the three wise men gave Jesus on his birth.

Reverend Sotirios 'Sam' Dimitriou has been collecting the oil, and then giving it out to parishioners and pilgrims alike by soaking it up with little cotton balls, the Chicago Tribune reports.

So far, he says he's given out 5,000 samples of the oil to the faithful who have flocked to the church.

The painting seeps oil from its halo, wings, hands and beard - and not its eyes - which Dimitriou says means the icon offers joy and not sadness.

Several believers say that the oil has cured them of sicknesses, including one person who says they are now cancer free.

Another man says he went to the doctor about a blockage in an artery after receiving a sample of the oil, and found that the blockage was no longer there.

Even Dimitriou himself says he's seen an improvement in his health.

He tells the Tribune that before the oil started to flow, he would frequently pass out at the alter or in his office due to nerve damage.

But now he hasn't been hospitalized since September and he stopped taking his medication in January.

While Dimitriou admits that there may be a natural reason for the painting to seep oil, he says he's not looking to solve that mystery.

'When people see this, it's just a reminder that God is still alive and still working through us and it's a reminder that there's still hope in the world for us,' he said.

The oil will likely lead to more congregants than usual this weekend, as the Greek Orthodox community celebrates Easter.

NA waa For YOUooo Mr.GOVERNOR!!! I Alerted Security Operatives Before the Fulani Herdsmen Attack But They Ignored Me - Enugu Governor

I Alerted Security Operatives Before the Fulani Herdsmen Attack But They Ignored Me - Enugu Governor

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi

The governor of Enugu has blamed the success of the Fulani herdsmen's recent onslaught in one of the state's communities on security operatives who turned a blind eye to his tip off.

Following the slaughter of 46 Ukpabi, Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State natives last Monday, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, on Friday, accused security agencies in the state of complicity despite assurances they gave him that planned attack will be forestalled according to the Vanguard.

Ugwuanyi made the allegation while speaking in an emotional laden tone during a news briefing at Government House attended by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Deputy Governor, Cecila Ezeilo, all serving senators and House of Representatives members in the state.

The governor’s speech read in part:

"On Sunday, April 24, by 7 pm, the night before this carnage took place, I got security information from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Transition Chairman, Hon. Cornell Onwubuya that such an incident was likely to take place in the state.

I immediately summoned a meeting of the State Security Council which commenced by 10 pm.

The meeting was attended by the following: Garrison Commander, Brigadier General Olufemi Akinjobi who normally represents the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division Nigerian Army; the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu; the State Director of Department State Security Services (DSS), Mr. M. Abdul Malik; the State Commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Mr. Lar Stephen; Representatives of the Nigerian Air force, Federal Road Safety Corps and Nigerian Prison Services, who attended as observers.

“From the side of government were, myself, the Governor, the Deputy Governor, the Secretary to the State Government, the Chief of Staff, the Chairman, State Traditional Rulers Council and the Honourable Attorney General of the State.

“In the meeting, we received assurances from the Commissioner of Police that the Area Commander of SARS was on ground in Nimbo. That the Anti-Terrorism Unit was at Nimbo.

That he was in contact with the Kogi State Commissioner of Police and reported suspected herdsmen grouping at Odolu in Kogi State preparatory for an attack on Nimbo and Abbi communities. That Police mobile force and conventional police were already drafted to Nimbo and Abbi communities.

That he was in touch with the Area Commander, Idah, ACP Ikegwuonwu and had linked him with the Area Commander, Nsukka, ACP Monday Kuryas. Both men according to the CP reported that there were no traces of suspected herdsmen in Nsukka or Idah.

“That he ordered the Area Commander, Nsukka to redeploy to Nimbo. That the Garrison Commander on his part assured the meeting that Military was already deployed to Nimbo. Let me state that the State Government provided logistics for these deployments. After receiving these assurances of deployments to Nimbo, I felt quite confident that we had done everything possible to forestall an attack on Nimbo.”

“I have deliberately narrated what transpired at the Security Council meeting fully conscious of the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution pertaining to my oath of office. I am doing this in due discharge of my duties as Governor.

“Sadly, in the early hours of Monday reports of this carnage reached me. More disturbing was the report that the attack of innocent and defenceless citizens were carried out at about 6.30 am.

Further reports available to me indicate that apart from the killing and maiming of innocent and defenceless citizens of Nimbo, a Church was also burnt. Following this development, I engaged the security agencies in order to ensure that the Nimbo area was secured from further attacks that might escalate the situation.

“I am at once, constituting a judicial commission of inquiry to investigate the immediate and remote causes of all the violent occurrences in the State associated with suspected Fulani Herdsmen and recommend appropriate measures that will be put in place to prevent future occurrence.

“What happened between 6.30am and 7.30 am on Monday 25th April, 2016 despite assurances from the Security Agencies? Only the Security Agencies can answer this question”.

BUSTED! Jonathan’s Agents Offered Us N2b for 2015 Election

BUSTED! Jonathan’s Agents Offered Us N2b for 2015 Election

The Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) – a coalition of over 400 civic organizations – has revealed that the agents of former President Goodluck Jonathan offered it a bribe of N2billion for the purpose of compromising the outcome of the 2015 elections.

The bribe came by way of what TMG chairman, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, branded a dubious proposal.
His words: "Specifically, some errand boys from the Presidency at the time came to us with a dubious proposal that 50,000 agents of the PDP be fielded as TMG observers.

“In financial terms, the errand boys expressed the Presidency’s readiness to fund the fraud with the sum of Two Billion Naira.”

This is coming on the heels of ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission into how $115million (N23.299billion) was contributed by some oil barons and shared to some electoral officials to rig the elections in favour of ex-President Jonathan.

Fidelity Bank, which handled the disbursement of the funds, has already refunded the N49.7million profit it made from the deal while the EFCC is said to have recovered N408.7million from some of the beneficiaries of the slush funds.

The TMG said on Friday that it has now been “vindicated by the latest revelations from the EFCC about how some INEC chiefs and election monitors shared from N23.3 billion slush provided by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Allison Madueke.”

It added: "With the realization that a good name is better than silver and gold, we stoutly rejected the Greek gift, just as we held our head high in defence of the truth and the best interest of Nigerians.

”The participants in this grand scale bazaar had only one objective: to subvert the electoral process, undermine the votes of the Nigerian people and rig in their paymaster.

“It is utterly shocking that people entrusted with the sacred and heavy responsibility of superintending the electoral process would descend so low to stake the credibility of a critical democratic institution on the altar of quick enrichment.

“In any case, the TMG had always known that the day of reckoning would come for all those who sought to exchange the sacred position they occupy for a mess of pottage.

“The bigger tragedy is the case of so-called civil society organizations which threw the very basis of their credibility as election observers to the dogs.

“We cannot mince words about the fact that these indicted INEC officials and their monetized co-conspirators masquerading as election observers have betrayed the nation.

“They are the unscrupulous elements who give the nation a bad name in the international community.

“It is, therefore, imperative for the EFCC to do a clinical investigation and ensure all those culpable are named, shamed and jailed.

“It is pertinent to recall that in the build-up to the 2015 elections, the TMG kept on announcing that there were anti-democratic forces heavily funded by filthy lucre from the immediate past Presidency which wanted to undermine the electoral process.

“We repeatedly warned all stakeholders to be on their guard in order to wade off all machinations bent on subverting the express wishes of Nigerians.
“It is also worthy to note that the TMG itself was not spared the excruciating pressure and inducement aimed at pushing us to compromise our position.

“For daring to turn down what the enemies of democracy termed, a “juicy” offer, the TMG was repeatedly vilified and persecuted by institutions of the state.

“Even after the elections, TMG Chairman, Comrade Ibrahim M. Zikirullahi, was severally trailed by unknown men, who obviously had sinister intentions.
“In the end, the TMG, as an organization, chose not to travel on the path of least resistance.

“As the chickens come home to roost with these weighty revelations from the EFCC, it is time to separate the patriots from the chaff both in civil society and in the INEC.

“For us, the INEC, as an institution, should immediately set up a far-reaching and transparent disciplinary process to make a public example of all those rotten elements who descended so low to drag the institution in the mud.

“It is only by implementing this process of thorough cleansing that INEC can begin the process of restoring public confidence.

“As for those weak characters in civil society, who decided to sell their conscience and shirk their responsibility to the Nigerian people, it is time to account.

“And because our vindication as a civil society coalition rings clear, all we can say is: let the music play and let the traitors who attempted to toy with the nation’s destiny face the melody.”

Lagos: Gridlock As Tanker Drivers Protest Murder Of Their Colleague By LASTMA Official

Lagos: Gridlock As Tanker Drivers Protest Murder Of Their Colleague By LASTMA Official

Tanker drivers, on Friday, April 29, 2016, took over the ever busy Oshodi/Apapa Expressway protesting the death of a colleague who was manhandled by Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA).

An eyewitness, Authority Newspaper reports, said the tanker driver met his death when LASTMA officials blocked him and accused him of wrong parking on the highway.

“In the process of trying to draw him out of his truck to effect his arrest, he was drawn out on the expressway and was hit by an oncoming vehicle. Meanwhile, the LASTMA officials immediately fled the scene.

“This sparked up anger amongst his fellow drivers who gathered and blocked the expressway with their trucks and setting up fire with tyres thereby causing unprecedented traffic lockdown on the road,” an Okada rider told journalists.

The outcome of this incident, which happened at the Ijesha end of the expressway caused gridlock on both side of the expressway and also spilled over all the adjoining roads. Vehicles were making u-turn on the road and taking one-way to follow other roads and beat the traffic.

According to a mini-bus driver at the Lord’s Chosen bus stop, Ijesha, who simply gave his name as Udoka, people trekked as far as Cele bus stop to Ijesha to enter bus that passes through Amuwo-Odofin and get to Mile Two.

However, it took the intervention of security men, which comprised both the police and the military to disperse the protesters and restore order and sanity on the road.

REALLY???‘People politicising herdsmen killings’

‘People politicising herdsmen killings’

Kashim Shettima,

The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has condemned the killings carried out by herdsmen across the country, warning any individual or group against politicising the situation.

Addressing journalists at the end of the NSGF’s meeting in Kaduna, Kashim Shettima, governor of Borno state and chairman of the forum, said rather than unite and find a solution to the problem, some people have chosen to be insulting the Fulanis.

“We want to unequivocally condemn the recent killings in the country. From Agatu in Benue to Enugu and other parts of the country,” he said.

“But, we equally condemn the politicisation of the whole crisis. It goes beyond Fulani. If anything happens, they say Fulani herdsmen; to me it is an insult.

“Kidnapping in this country originated in the South-east, were they called Igbo kidnappers? We have a great national challenge and we want to call on all and sundry to come and let us solve our common challenges as a people.”

Shettima also spoke on the insurgency in the north-east, saying the current administration has succeeded in degrading the Boko Haram sect.

“I can confidently confirm that the insurgency has been irredeemably halted and the insurgents themselves completely subdued,” he said.

“What remains now are few isolated pockets of suicide bombings which the recalcitrant remnants of the insurgents use as a last resort to attract attention and create unnecessary panic among the general population.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the full restoration of civil authority in the recaptured areas in order to pave way for the safe return of internally displaced people (IDPs).

“Subsequently, officers of the Nigerian Police and those of the Civil Defence Corps could be deployed to maintain law and order and also stave off any intrusion into these communities,” he said.

“It has therefore become a strategic imperative for us to take a hard look at these formidable challenges and work out strategies on the most effective ways of not only reversing the trend but also overcoming them once and for all.

“Whatever resolutions   we can come up with would be communicated to the appropriate authorities for obvious analytical examination and possible implementation.”

We Won’t Condone Herdsmen Activities in Anambra State – Police Commissioner

The commissioner of police in Anambra State, Hosea Hassan Karma, has said that his men will not tolerate the heinous activities of the Fulani Herdsmen in the state.

The police commissioner spoke on Friday, April 29, 2016 in Onitsha during an award ceremony organized by the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) where he expressed the readiness of the state’s police to combat the militia and other criminal activities to a zero level.

He said that Anambra, among the Southeast states, remains the most peaceful region in the country and does not need the unnecessary tension the ruffians called Fulani herdsmen intend to create.

On modalities put in place to combat the criminals, Karma said, “We have constituted a formidable joint taskforce across the state borders, to check and monitor the activities of the Fulani herdsmen and other criminals.

“We have also engaged the community leaders which include traditional rulers, president-generals of all the 177 communities in the state, village heads and other stakeholders who before now have been housing Fulani herdsmen to educate them on the consequences of violence, and the need to live in harmony with the host communities.

Earlier in his address, the chairman of the police community relations committee, Sir Victor Agubisi, appreciated the efforts put in place by the present commissioner of police in the state, Karma, in re-enforcing police ethics, which according to him, has tremendously reformed the police force in the state, having placated the dent of police image in the heart of the masses.

Evening Fire Guts Largest Market in Asaba In Delta

Evening Fire Guts Largest Market in Asaba In Delta

Goods worth millions of naira were, on Friday night, April 29, 2016, destroyed as fire gutted the popular Ogbegonogo Market, the largest market in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

Our reporter witnessed traders were seen wailing as the inferno consumed sections of the market before the arrival of the State Fire Service officials in company of security agents.

The inferno started at the Umuaji line at about 7:00 pm and lasted for about two hours, destroying over 30 shops while wares valued at millions of naira were burnt to rubbles.

It was gathered that the fire started when the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) restored power to the area, when one of the cables sparked fire and spread to other parts of the markets.

The fire left behind tears on the faces of the traders as they wailed uncontrollably having lost their goods in the face of the challenging economic situations in the country.

Fire service fighters, who later arrived, were seen battling the inferno while men of the Nigerian police force were seen controlling traffic and ensuring that hoodlums do not take advantage of the situation to loot shops.

Shop owners, including pregnant women, were also seen running helter skelter to salvage their goods and shops from destroying while others stood helpless watching the fire ravaging the shops.

A shop owner, who simply identified himself as Emeka, told our correspondent that he just returned from Aba market where he spent close to a million to purchase goods to stock his shop.

Another shop owner, Mrs. Mary Ejiofor who deals on expensive clothing materials, told our correspondent, “Where will I start from, now that schools have resumed and my husband just paid huge amount as rent”. She said she has lost all that she stocked in her shop.

As at the time of filing this report on Friday night, traders were still counting their losses while men of the fire service and the police were still on ground battling to put the situation under control.

We have no proof that Fulani herdsmen killing farmers are foreigners – Immigration

We have no proof that Fulani herdsmen killing farmers are foreigners – Immigration

The Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, has said there is no evidence to show that the suspected Fulani herdsmen allegedly killing members of their host communities across Nigeria are foreigners.
The Public Relations Officer of NIS, Ekpedeme King, while disclosing this, explained that foreigners coming into the country are never profiled on the basis of their ethnicity.

According to him, “There is no evidence that the herdsmen are foreigners and the immigration service doesn’t profile immigrants based on their ethnicity. So, the NIS cannot say whether the herdsmen are Nigerians or not because nobody has produced them for us to profile them.

“We are at the borders and we have not seen any herdsman coming into the country. We have our men at the borders and they are doing their job. So far, what we have heard is speculation that they are from foreign countries, but no one has profiled them to know their identities, but it is not impossible that they could be foreigners.

“We don’t ask if Fulani’s are herdsmen or not and we don’t see people coming in with cattle. We have not received reports of people coming in with cattle. When you see someone coming in with animals, we have relevant agencies to check the state of the animals. If you are importing or exporting animals, like in other countries, the port health officials are in charge of that.”

You have three days to vacate our land – Igbo Youths warn Fulani herdsmen

You have three days to vacate our land – Igbo Youths warn Fulani herdsmen

Igbo youths under the aegis of the Ohaneze Youth Council, OYC, has given Fulani herdsmen till Monday next week to vacate Igbo land or be forced out.
The warning followed the massacre of no fewer than 40 people of Nimbo community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu by Fulani herdsmen last Monday.

The warning was contained in a communique signed and released in Enugu by the National Vice President of the group, Mazi Obinna Achuonye and the Chairmen of OYC in seven Igbo-speaking states of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, Delta, Imo and Rivers.

It reads, “Herdsmen are off-shoots of Boko Haram and must not be allowed any breeding ground in Igbo land. Any herdsman who fails to quit South East by Monday will have himself to blame.

“Never again will Igbo youths fold their arms and watch our people being massacred by blood-sucking terrorists under the guise of herdsmen. Urgent times need drastic measure. We warn all violent Fulani herdsmen to vacate our farmland, our backyards, our territories and boundaries on or before Monday next week.

“Even though Ohanaeze Ndigbo will meet over the weekend to discuss this menace, Igbo youths will not wait until our people are massacred again before we take action.

“If after Monday and the herdsmen are still around, we will direct Igbo vigilante groups set up by OYC in all the 95 Local Government Areas in South East to force them out”.

OYC also alleged that its intelligent unit had uncovered plans by the Fulani herdsmen to attack Ebonyi State.

“We have uncovered plots that their next target is Ebonyi State. They are coming from Taraba State to attack Ebonyi. We want the Governor of Ebonyi State and all the security agents in the state to be at alert”, the group said.

OYC further disclosed that they are collaborating with Ijaw youths and Middle Belt youths on how to defend their people since the current administration had failed to do so.

“Ijaw youths, and Middle Belt progressives are already waiting for the expiration of the deadline on Monday. Fulani herdsmen have pushed us to the wall, time to take action is now or never”, it warned

Most Wanted Ex-Niger-Delta Militant, Tompolo Speaks From Hiding...See Details

Most Wanted Ex-Niger-Delta Militant, Tompolo Speaks From Hiding...See Details

Tompolo

Highly influential ex-Niger-Delta militant, Tompolo has denied links with a syndicate that attacked an oil pipeline in the Niger-Delta region to sabotage the government.

Wanted billionaire and Niger Delta ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo, has disassociated himself from the new militia group in the region known as the Niger Delta Avengers, who claimed responsibility for the damaged Forcados 48-inch export pipeline.

In a statement issued and signed by his media adviser and consultant, Paul Bebenimibo, Tompolo declared that he is not part of the group.

The fugitive Tompolo said that while it is unfortunate that he is still being associated with pipeline vandalism after a series of media reports debunked his alleged involvement in renewed hostilities in the region, ‎it is imperative to state unequivocally that he does not have ties with the Niger Delta Avengers.

According to his statement, “It is very unfortunate that Tompolo is still being accused of pipeline vandalism despite several press releases he has made denying his involvement in the renewed hostility in the Niger Delta region. Since the declaration of the presidential amnesty program by the late President Yar’Adua in 2009, which he wholeheartedly embraced and accepted, he has sworn not to be part of arm struggles either overtly or covertly.

"Most Nigerians, if not all, are aware of the role Tompolo played in safeguarding crude oil and gas facilities during the last administration, and he is still doing that for the love of country, humanity and out of patriotism. Tompolo is very happy with his achievements through non-violence advocacy since the enthronement of the 2009 presidential amnesty program for the Niger Delta region, particularly in the coastal areas.

“For instance, the establishment of the first maritime university and a dock and ship building yard and other good things which space and time will not permit us to mention. Therefore it is unreasonable and unimaginable to associate Tompolo with any person(s) or group involved in pipeline vandalism.

"It is very important to inform Mr. President and the security agencies in the country that some members of the ruling All Progressive Congress, particularly from Bayelsa and Delta States, are not happy with him because they have not gotten anything from him after almost a year since he assumed office by way of appointments and contracts. Therefore, some of them are involved in nefarious activities in the oil and gas sector so as to be engaged in pipeline surveillance.

"We are aware of how such persons are chasing the Minister of Petroleum for State, Ibe Kachukwu, around. Tompolo has said on many occasions that he will not resort to violence because of his case with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, as his legal team is working towards the resolving the issue. It is his prayer to God Almighty to see him through in these trying times," the statement reads.

The drug items found on the culprit

A Nigerian man risks a capital punishment in far away Asia after being nabbed for dealings in hard drugs in Malaysia which has executed several drug dealers.

Nigerians keep bringing bad name to this great country in that inordinate ambition for money without decent skills or knowledge acquisition.

A report on "Malaysia Mail Online" says Police has arrested a Nigerian private college student on Wednesday, April 27 in connection with the seizure of 20.8kg of syabu (methamphetamine) worth about RM3.2 million, which was smuggled from China via courier service.

The drugs, meant for distribution to the local addict population was found hidden in a portable air-conditioning unit at a house in Bukit Mahkota Cheras, to prevent detection by the authorities.

Federal Police Narcotics Investigation Department deputy director, Datuk Pahlawan Mohd Dzuraidi Ibrahim said police had launched simultaneous raids in Bandar Mahkota Cheras, Selangor.

"We have arrested the 27-year-old man and seized 21 packets of drugs believed to be syabu," he told reporters at a press conference on Thursday.

"The drugs, weighing about 20.8kg, were stashed in a hidden compartment in the machines. Initial investigations revealed the suspect had brought the drug into the country from China, using a courier service company," Dzuraidi said police have not ruled out the possibility that the man was connected to a syndicate.

"The suspect had just started trafficking in drugs in Malaysia about nine months ago and we are still tracking down the remaining members of the syndicate. The drug can meet the demand of 35,000 addicts for a month," he said.

The Nigerian has been remanded under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the mandatory death sentence upon conviction. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar congratulated the STING team for the success, via his Twitter account.

Beyonce's Father Reveals Who She's Talking About in New Lemonade Album

Beyonce's Father Reveals Who She's Talking About in New Lemonade Album

Ever since Beyonce dropped her visual album, 'Lemonade', the Internet has been buzzing with questions about the singer's marriage and personal life. Her father in an interview, has answered some of the questions.

American superstar singer, Beyonce's father, Mathew Knowles was asked about his daughter's sixth studio album, "Lemonade" and the singer’addressed who the album is actually about.

According to him, the incredibly personal project is about everybody. "Let me tell you who she’s talking about, can I tell you who she’s talking about? She’s talking about you. You put that in context for you personally. She’s talking about you and everybody that is you, that’s who she’s talking about.

"I think that’s the beauty of her creativity and I think that’s what makes it so special, is that it relates to everyone. Every one of us have been disappointed before and have had to go through the grieving process of anger and, you know, disappointment and then acceptance and forgiveness. And I think that’s why this again is touching so many people, because it’s universal. Everybody can relate to it," he continued.

While speaking on the Mark Thompson’s Sirius XM show 'Make It Plain' recently, Mathew shutdown any speculation about part of the narrative in Lemonade being about him. He addressed the spoken word poem that Beyonce recited during the 'Accountability' segment of her one hour-long feature.

The poem read: "Did he convince you that he was God? … Are you a slave to the back of his hand? Am I talking about your husband or your father?."

"I can say I have never in my life hit my daughter. So she has never been a slave to the back of my hand because I didn’t believe in that," Mathew said, adding that he was very proud of Bey’s ‘Lemonade’ and called it probably her best body of work.

Fuel Diversion: DPR Impounds NNPC, Conoil Trucks

Fuel Diversion: DPR Impounds NNPC, Conoil Trucks

In an effort to curb the incessant diversion of petrol product to neighbouring countries, the DPR has impounded some trucks belonging to some major marketers of the product.

The Department of Petroleum Resources in Kwara State has impounded several petrol trucks belonging to NNPC and Conoil.

This was revealed by the state's Controller, Operations of the agency, Mr. Salvation Philips, on Friday saying that in conjunction with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, the agncy had impounded two trucks loaded with petrol in the state, adding that the petrol was being diverted.

He said that the department had also confiscated scores of jerrycans filled with fuel by black marketeers.

Speaking with journalists in Ilorin, he warned against patronising the black market, adding that petrol obtained from there could lead to destruction of lives and property.

According to him, one of the trucks belongs to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the content was allegedly diverted to a private fuel station, Fabb Oil and Gas Limited located in Tanke, Ilorin, while the other belongs to Conoil.

He said the Conoil truck had 46,000 litres of petrol, while that of the NNPC had discharged 7,800 litres; 13,000 litres of fuel was still in the truck when it was impounded.

He stated that appropriate sanctions would be meted out to the culprits after the completion of investigations.

He urged all petroleum marketers to do their business legally and in compliance with petroleum laws and the DPR regulations and directives.

Philip said, “This particular truck is an NNPC truck, but we have got the name of the transporter, Profelick. We have a serious interest in this because this is the NNPC product that has been diverted. This is a classical case of economy sabotage.

“The government is doing its best within the scarce available resources and some few elements in our midst are trying to thwart the good intentions of the government to make the product available."

Fidelity Bank: EFCC to Invite Peter Obi Over $115m Transaction

Fidelity Bank: EFCC to Invite Peter Obi Over $115m Transaction

Peter Obi

A former governor of Anambra State has been implicated in a $115 million fraud involving a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke and a prominent Nigerian bank.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may soon invite erstwhile governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, over the $115 million allegedly received from former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by Fidelity Bank, according to Today News.

But the anti-graft commission is reportedly seeking clarifications from his successor, Governor Willy Obiano.

Sources at the EFCC noted that during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election, Alison-Madueke invited Nnamdi Okonkwo, Managing Director, Fidelity Bank, to help her handle some cash, which would be disbursed to electoral officials and groups.

It was learnt that Okonkwo recently arrested by EFCC told his interrogators that he was under instructions from Obi, believed to be one of the owners of the bank, to go to Alison-Madueke’s residence in Abuja for a “financial transaction that could benefit the bank.”

A source at the EFCC said the transaction of that magnitude couldn’t have been done without Obi’s influence.

Towards the tail end of his tenure, Obi defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and was part of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign team. Investigators in the alleged $115 million money transfer are working under the theory that the said money could only be moved by a bank whose owner is close to the former president’s campaign team.

“Okonkwo told his interrogators that he couldn’t have gone to Alison-Diezani’s place if the deal hadn’t been finalized by top players with connection to his bank,” said a source at the commission.

It was learnt that the current governor of the state also made input in the transaction. Governor Obiano can’t be invited or arrested by EFCC because of his immunity as a governor. It was learnt, however, that representation has been made to the governor for clarification on the matter.

Wilson Uwujaren, head, Media and Publicity, however, feigned ignorance on this development.

He said that he is not yet aware of the new development in the investigation but promised to get back as soon as matters become clearer. He, however, said that the case is still under investigation.

“We may have to invite people, anybody, we feel might give insight into the matter,” he said.

Earlier in the week, the managing director of Fidelity Bank was arrested by the EFCC.

Okonkwo, Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank, was reportedly picked up by the EFCC on Wednesday for allegedly receiving $115 million from Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The EFCC also arrested the bank’s Head of Operations, Mr. Martins Izuogbe, for his role in the alleged scam, which the anti-graft agency described as unprecedented.

Reports say that during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election, Alison-Madueke invited Okonkwo to help her handle some cash, which would be disbursed to electoral officials and groups.

EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, said Okonkwo was being held as part of an investigation into financial transactions made last year in the closing months of the administration led by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Fidelity Bank confirmed that the matter was being investigated by the EFCC and said the transactions were “duly reported as required by the regulators”.
