Eight Migrants Die As Boat Sinks Off Libya

At least eight migrants drowned when their Europe-bound boat sank off Libya's coast and at least 100 people are missing, a coastguard official said on Saturday.

The eight bodies were on an inflatable craft that can carry up to 120 passengers, said Colonel Fathi al-Rayani, head of the coastguard in Garabulli, 60 kilometres (40 miles) east of Tripoli.

He estimated that "at least 100" migrants were missing. The boat was spotted deflated off Garabulli, and the coastguard found the bodies inside, said an AFP reporter who accompanied them. Conflict-
ravaged Libya has long been a stepping stone for migrants seeking a better life in Europe.

The UN refugee agency has said around 61,250 migrants have reached Italy since the start of the year after crossing the Mediterranean, while 1,778 more are dead or missing.

The Italian coastguard has said that more than 900 migrants were rescued off Libya on Thursday and Friday.

Libyan navy spokesman, General Ayoub Qassem, meanwhile told AFP that coastguards patrolling off Zawiya west of Tripoli on Friday intercepted five inflatables and two wooden boats with more than 570 migrants on board.

Man Gets Death Sentence In Facebook Blasphemy Case

A man has been sentenced to death for committing blasphemy on Facebook, lawyers said today, the first conviction on charges arising from social media.

Judge Shabbir Ahmad Awan handed down the verdict in Bahawalpur, around 600 kilometres (372 miles) south of capital Islamabad, finding Taimoor Raza guilty , prosecutor Shafiq Qureshi told AFP.

Raza had a Facebook argument about Islam with someone who turned out to be a counter-terrorism department official, defence lawyer Rana Fida Hussain said. The official brought charges against
Raza based on the comments made on the social networking site.

Hussain said his client was innocent and that he would appeal the conviction. Millions of Pakistanis have been receiving text messages from the government warning them against sharing "blasphemous" content online.

Gaddafi's Son Freed From Prison

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been released from prison, according to fighters who control the facility.

A statement from the Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Battalion, a militia which controls Zintan, a mountainous region southwest of the capital Tripoli, said Saif al-Islam was released late on Saturday.

The most prominent of Gaddafi's sons, Saif al-Islam, 44, was captured in Zintan in November 2011 as he was fleeing to neighbouring Niger after opposition fighters seized Tripoli.

Saif al-Islam, the most prominent of Gaddafi’s eight children, was sentenced to death in July 2015 by a court in Tripoli in a mass trial of former Gaddafi government officials.

He is wanted by the International Criminal Court on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Since the Gaddafi's four-decade rule ended in 2011, Libya has struggled to establish basic institutions and rule of law, with militias and former fighters challenging the authority of the weak central government.

Northern Threat: Return Our Oil Blocs, N’Delta Militants Tell FG

The coalition of Niger Delta militants on Friday called on the Federal Government to return all oil blocs being controlled by northerners to the people of the region.

The agitators explained that their action was based on the ultimatum given by some northern youth groups to the Igbo to vacate the North within three months.

Leaders of the eight militants groups said in a statement that the Niger Delta region shall declare its independence on October 1, 2017 and free itself from enslavement by the North.

The coalition comprises Niger Delta Watchdogs, Niger Delta Volunteers, Niger Delta Peoples Fighters, Niger Delta Warriors, Bakassi Freedom Fighters, Niger Delta Movement for Justice, Niger Delta Fighters Network and Niger Delta Freedom Mandate.

In a statement, which was said to have been issued shortly after their meeting in Port Harcourt, the militant leaders warned all companies operating in such oil blocs to vacate within three months.

The group said “A coalition of the Niger Delta militants met today in Port Harcourt to review the recent call by the Arewa Youths groups that the Ndigbo should vacate all the Northern states within three months.

“We see the declaration by Arewa Youths as a well consultative declaration which the northern elders, leaders, political elite, security heads from the North and governors were fully aware.

“We demand 100 percent control of our resources. We demand that the Federal Government should hand over all oil blocs owned by the northerners to Niger Delta indigenes. All the companies operating in such oil blocks/wells should vacate within three months.

“The Federal Government should immediately relocate NNPC and all the offices that have to do with oil/gas sector back to Niger Delta states and an immediately replacement of the Group Managing Director with an indigene of Niger Delta.

“All northern indigenes working in NNPC and any other Board that has anything to do with oil/gas should be sack with immediate effect.

“We demand an independent and sovereign Republic of Niger Delta. We are tired of living with the North under Nigeria. We are tired of the President’s sentiments to the Niger Delta people.

“The President can have time to receive the Chibok girls, but could not have time to meet with the Representatives of the Niger Delta agitators. Our money has been used to fund Boko Haram, a problem created by the Northerners in order to use it as conduit pipe to siphon the resources of Niger Delta.

“On October 1, 2017 we shall declare our independence come rain, come shine. We shall take our destiny in our hands and free ourselves from the slavery of the North as they are tired of one Nigeria.”

They maintained that all the companies and businesses owned by the northerners in Niger Delta should be vacated within three months, saying, “From 1st October 2017, we don’t want to see any northerner close to Niger Delta; any attempt to penetrate shall meet fierce resistance. This time, we are not going to play defence, but attack,” the statement by the coalition of Niger Delta agitators read.

They also called on all agitating groups to resume attacks/bombings on all oil/gas pipelines, especially the exporting lines across the Niger Delta region with immediate effect, adding that the measure was aimed at ensuring zero oil/gas production before October 1, 2017.

They said, “We also demand the Federal government should immediately replace the Inspector General of Police with an indigene of the South West, the Director General of DSS with an indigene of South East, and the National Security Adviser with an indigene of South- South.

“The Speaker, House of Representatives should voluntarily resign and hand over to an indigene of the South-South.”

US Senators Block Sale Of Fighter Jets To Nigeria Over Human Rights Concern

Two US senators have written to the secretary of state not to sell fighter jets to Nigeria

- They claimed issue of human rights concern was a reason for this blockade

- Nigeria was accused of not following court orders in the detention of El-Zakzaky

The Nigerian government has suffered a setback in its fight against terrorism as the United States has been urged not to sell fighter jets to Nigeria over human rights concern.
Donald Trump-led administration had promised to sell 12 weaponised aircraft to Nigeria for  $600
million but this might have suffered a dip as senators Cory Booker and Rand Paul in a joint letter on Tuesday, June 8, said Nigeria must display concern for human rights first.

The duo in the letter to the US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, cited the killing of Shi’ites by the army in early 2015 and the accidental bombing of an IDP camp as reasons why the aircrafts should not be sold to Nigeria.

They noted that although the country was facing Boko Haram insurgency, failure to comply with human rights directives shows the country should not be in custody of these fighter jets.

Read the letter below:

Dear Secretary Tillerson:

"We are writing to convey our concerns regarding reports that you intend to proceed with plans to sell A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircrafts, with mounted machine guns and related parts and logistical support, to help the Nigerian government combat Boko Haram. We request that before you approve this sale, you brief us on the steps Nigeria has taken to investigate and hold accountable those that have committed human rights abuses. We believe the security threats Nigeria is facing are very real but that a sale of this nature, and at this time, is ill-advised. Boko Haram – a 5,000 to 10,000 strong insurgent force with ties to the Islamic State – will not be defeated through expanded air power alone.

"Despite your comments that values will not impact national security policies, we believe proceeding without any clear indications of progress from the Nigerian government on the protection of human rights and enforcement of accountability would run contrary to our national security objectives.

"With proper training of pilots, the sale of more sophisticated aircraft could lead to more accurate targeting of insurgents by the Nigerian Air Force and potentially a reduction of civilian casualties. But there is evidence that the Nigerian military routinely flouts the laws of war and there remains an absence of adequate safeguards and accountability mechanisms. This means that the Tucano aircraft could be used in a manner inconsistent with international human rights and humanitarian law – and that ultimately helps to strengthen Boko Haram.

"Given that the Nigerian military still lacks the ability to mount a sophisticated counterinsurgency cooperation combining group and air assets, and the A-29 airframes will not be ready for delivery for at least another year at the earliest, we see no rush to complete the sale. Because this sale is an important point of leverage to encourage critical reforms necessary to defeat Boko Haram, we recommend that you require the Nigerian government to complete these steps before proceeding with the sale. Some of the important and specific benchmarks that would show progress include:

"Progress from the authorities in Abuja on the Kaduna government’s investigation into the December 2015 alleged massacre on Shiite Muslims in the northeastern town of Zaria, where at least 347 members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, a Shia Muslim group, were killed by army soldiers. Credible organizations found that the army’s attack was unjustified. An investigation launched by the local Kaduna government found the General Officer in command of the army to have authorized the massacre and recommended prosecution. Nearly a year after this report was published, there has been no follow-up from the federal government in Abuja. Authorities also failed to comply with a court order for the release of the movement’s leader, Ibraheem El Zakzaky, and his wife who remain in detention without charges since December 2015.

"Completion of the investigation into the January 2017 attack on a displaced persons camp in Rann, northeastern Nigeria, by the Nigerian Air Force, which killed at least 236 people and injured thousands more. The government was quick to acknowledge the attack, which officials said was an accident, and agreed to undertake an investigation but it has yet to be finalized and then made available to the public. Even if it was accidental, the Rann incident demonstrates the urgent need for safeguards and accountability.

"Progress on a fair investigation into the 2014 killing by the Nigerian security forces of over 600 people, on the heels of Boko Haram’s attack on Giwa army barracks. Hundreds of mostly unarmed detainees, including children, were killed in extrajudicial executions and likely buried in mass graves around the city.

"At the same time, there continues to be additional allegations of corruption, abuse, and misconduct throughout the Nigerian military. While some soldiers have been released or retired, there has yet to be any real or meaningful accountability for the systemic challenges that have plagued Nigeria’s security forces for decades. Without addressing these problems at an institutional level, reform is merely cosmetic and will only perpetuate longstanding patterns of abuse, which could serve as propaganda for Boko Haram and other insurgent groups seeking to discredit the Nigerian government.

"We are concerned that the decision to proceed with this sale will empower the government to backtrack even further on its commitments to human rights, accountability, and upholding international humanitarian law, which in turn could spur greater unrest and violence, particularly in the northeastern part of the country. Accordingly, we strongly urge you to reconsider your decision to sell A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircrafts to Nigeria without any meaningful reform or any clear safeguards in place. Instead we recommend you make clear to Abuja that the sale of these aircraft can proceed only if there is positive and measurable progress on reforming the security institutions.".

Quit Notice: Return Home Now, Afenifere Tells Southerners

Following the October 1 ultimatum issued by Arewa Youths Forum to the people of South-East origin living in the northern parts of the country to leave the region, the apex Yoruba socio-cultural organisation , Afenifere, has called on all Southerners resident there to start returning home.

Rising from an emergency meeting held by the group to discuss the state of the nation in Lagos on Thursday, Afenifere said all Southerners should see the quit notice not as meant for Igbo people alone, but the rest of their counterparts from the region.

Afenifere chieftain, Senator Femi Okurounmu who was present at the meeting told Saturday Sun that
the quit notice by the Arewa youths should be taken serious in view of historical experience.

“This quit notice by the northern youths should not be seen by any wise Southerner as being meant for only people from the South-East, or that it is an empty threat. These northern youths meant business, and not only that, they have the backing of the northern elders, who have not only expressed their support for the youths, but have also affirmed their backing for the quit notice given to the South-Easterners. These Northerners should not be underrated, and one of the major reasons we are insisting that all Southerners should start coming back to the South now is that when these attacks on them begin, the Northerners will attack all Southerners. How are they going to be separate a Yoruba from Igbo? It is going to be difficult. Southerners shouldn’t be gullible. They should start coming home now. They should not wait until the end of the ultimatum. We don’t want a repeat of 1966-1967 pogrom, when hundreds of people of Southern origin, especially those from the South-East were massacred in the North.

Okurounmu further said that Southerners should not be deceived by the arrest order on the Arewa youths by the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim and Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, saying such order was only meant to give Nigerians the impression that action was being taken to rein in the youths.

‘‘Have these Arewa youths not been walking the streets free since the Inspector-General of Police and Governor el-Rufai ordered their arrest? The IG is a hypocrite. When crisis broke out in Osun State recently among some Hausa and Yoruba youths, is it not this same IG that immediately under 24 hours of the crisis sent mobile policemen to arrest Yoruba youths, while he left out his Hausa kinsmen? Why is the IG now unable to arrest these Hausa-Fulani youths who issued the quit notice? We are just deceiving ourselves, there is no justice in Nigeria. When an Hausa-Fulani man kills another Nigerian, he has not committed an offence, but when another Nigerian kills Hausa-Fulani man, he has committed an offence and must be punished. That is the Nigeria of today for you’’, he remarked.

However, if Nigeria wants to break up, so be it, let it break up, if it wants to break up. Nigeria will not be the first country to break up . The defunct Soviet Union broke up, heavens did not fall, defunct Czechoslovakia broke up, heavens didn’t fall, and even in Africa, recently Southern Sudan broke away from Sudan and heavens didn’t fall. So, what’s the big deal if Nigeria breaks up? It is not compulsory that Nigerians should live together by force.

On its own part, Yoruba Unity Forum expressed concern over the development, describing the quit notice as not only provocative, but also a shameful act.

The forum, in a statement issued by its Secretary-General, Senator Anthony Adefuye, called for the immediate prosecution of the Arewa youths.

‘Why Dammy Krane Was Kicked Out Of 2face’s Record Label’

This past week has been probably the first time pop singer, Dammy Krane, trended on social media networks especially Twitter and Google. Sadly, it was for the very wrong reason as it was reported that he was arrested for credit card fraud and grand theft in far away US.

A source very close to the troubled singer, in a recent interview said part of his woes was his expulsion from Tuface’s Hypertek Records.

It was gathered that the singer was kicked out of the record label which brought him to limelight about two years ago and ever since then, he had been searching for sponsors to help with his career.
The singer, the source added, travelled to the US to find ways he could enhance his career which unfortunately landed him in jail.

His exit from the record label was silent because it was felt that it was not good for both the image of the singer and the record label.

“Dammy Krane had left Tuface’s Hypertek record since February 2015. Tuface is trying to build a reputable company and they do not want any negative news. That is why they did not announce his exit from the label. They had issues with him over the way he was doing collaborations with other artistes. It was not part of the contract that he signed, so technically it is a breach of contract.

They gave him several warnings which he did not adhere to, so they had no choice but to terminate the contract that they had with him. They did not make any noise about it because they did not want anything that would dent his image and that of the company. He was in the US to get new investor to help his career and also shoot some videos because he already had new material. He was also meant to use the opportunity to embark on his US tour,” the source said.’

After One season, Manchester United officially dismiss Zlatan Ibrahimovich

The Premier League rules require all clubs to submit their retained and released lists to the Premier League by the third Saturday in May. The list has just been made public as Premier League clubs from the 2016/17 season have submitted the lists of players they will be keeping in their squads, and the ones they will be releasing.
Unfortunately, for Manchester United, Zlatan Ibrahimovich is the only player from the club that has
been released.

The Premier league however stated that, 'Please note that players signified as a "free transfer" or released by a club on the expiry of their contract on 30 June 2017, could still remain there next season and so this list should not be seen as definitive for players leaving their club'. At the moment, Zlatan and Manchester United are yet to make official comments.

Zambia opposition leader moved to maximum security jail

Zambia's opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema, who's facing treason charges, said Friday he had been moved from a prison in the capital Lusaka to a maximum security jail in a small town.
Hichilema was arrested in April for allegedly failing to give way to President Edgar Lungu's motorcade and has so far been held in detention for two months.
A magistrate court on Thursday ruled that he should face trial for treason in the High Court, dismissing requests by his lawyers to throw out the charge.
"We can confirm that we have been moved to Mukobeko Maximum Prison in Kabwe. We arrived a few minutes ago," he said in a Facebook post.
"We don't know what is happening but we are not bothered by processes," he added.
According to his lawyer, Jack Mwiimbu, armed police officers at the Lusaka prison had earlier bundled Hichilema and five co-accused into a van and drove them to the city airport,
Mwiimbu described his transfer to Kabwe, about 150 kilometres north of Lusaka, as 'illegal'.
"There was a court order that they should be at Lusaka prison but they have gone against it. He was forcibly removed from Lusaka prison," Mwiimbu told reporters outside Lusaka Central Prison where Hichilema had been detained since April 11.
The treason case against Hakainde Hichilema, a wealthy self-made businessman who turned 55 last Sunday comes after he made a fifth unsuccessful bid for the presidency last year.
He has, however, refused to recognise Lungu as president and has challenged the narrow poll defeat in court.

Singer Sean Kingston claims he's so broke he has just $500 to his name and now living with his mum

Singer Sean Kingston is claiming he is dead broke despite selling millions of records at some point in his career. Below is a report from Bossip;

The singer filed court docs stating he has less than $500 in his bank accounts and owns no property or cars. In 2015, the lawyer James J. Gangitano sued Kingston, accusing him of refusing to pay up $12,500 worth of legal work he did in defending him.

After filing suit, the lawyer reached a deal with Kingston in early 2016. He agreed to pay $20,000 in installments between April 2016 and January 2017. However, Gangitano headed back to court months later accusing him of breaching the deal by failing to make the payments.
Under the agreement, if Kingston missed a payment, the entire amount of $14,500 would be due immediately. They demanded that the judge order Kingston to pay up due to his breach.
Earlier this year, the judge came back with his decision and sided with the lawyers, awarding them $14,500 in damages with interest until paid off. Kingston was also ordered to fill out a financial sheet which listed his assets and property in the hopes the
firm can use the info to collect on the debt.
In April, the attorney filed docs demanding Kingston be found in contempt for blowing off the judge’s order. He accused Kingston of refusing to comply with the court by filing out a financial information document. The judge signed off on the motion and ordered Kingston in contempt of court and ordered him to hand over his financial info ASAP.
Then recently, Kingston finally filled out his financial information form for the case. His form explained he currently owns no property or automobile. He lives with his mother Janice Turner in Los Angeles. He did not answer questions regarding his rate of pay but listed himself as an entertainer.
Kingston attached his last three bank account statements, which reveal his dire financial situation. For his February/March bank statement, his Bank of America account began the month with $18.96 but ended the month with $6.96. His Chase bank accounts started with $370.68 and $207.63 but ended with (negative) $19.65 and $7.22.
