10 things that may cause male infertility
(1) Keeping Mobile Phone in Pocket
A finding by some researchers at the University of Exeter England released earlier this June shows that keeping mobile phone in the pocket could affect sperm quality. They found out that exposure to cell phone radiation lowers sperm motility by 8% and viability by 9%. This finding is still a controversial one but it would be safer to keep away mobile phones from the pocket as much as possible.
Apart from radiation from mobile phones, other factors could also be responsible for infertility in males. In fact this was the argument of some scientists against the findings of the research from Exeter: that the singular action of phone radiation cannot be responsible for male infertility. Telegraph.co.uk outlined the following as other things that can also cause infertility.
(2) Heavy Drinking
It is said that alcohol affects the body's ability to absorb zinc which is a nutrient vital for healthy sperm. It's still unclear what quantity of alcohol is bad but it's advisable to stay away from it as much as possible, especially heavy drinking.
(3) Oxidative Stress
Another thing that can cause male infertility is oxidative stress. This is linked to lifestyle factors such as obesity, diet, pollutants, smoking and alcohol. Taking antioxidant supplements such as vitamin E, vitamin C, folic acid etc. is said to increase fertility.
(4) Poor Diet
Diet should be holistic. A healthy diet will help maintain a healthy sperm count and an poor diet otherwise. It is advisable that one eats foods that will guarantee the general health of the body.
(5) Excessive Exercise
Exercise is good for the body but its excess especially when it is combined with body building steroids can decrease the production of testosterone and thereby lower sperm count.
(6) Frequent Sex
Too much sex can decrease the quality of sperm cells. It is advised that couples wishing to conceive should limit intercourse to every two or three days.
(7) Exposure To Heat
Heat from laptops, wearing tight underpants and other things that could increase the temperature around the testicles could cause low sperm count. As much as possible, it is advised that the general crotch area should be kept cool.
(8) Untreated Infection
When STIs are not treated on time, it could result in infertility. Chlamydia infection, Gonorrhoea, Mumps etc can affect fertility and even cause sterility.
(9) Exposure to Pesticides and other Chemicals
It has been found that exposure to pesticides and other harmful chemicals can affect sperm quality and quantity. Men working with chemicals are advised to wear the appropriate protective gear and reduce their exposure to the chemicals as much as possible.
(10) Doping
Sniffing drugs like cocaine and cannabis can impair fertility in males. It is said that "cannabis seems to have a dramatic effect on sperm, making them swim too fast and "burn out" before they reach the egg". Some prescribed drugs can also affect fertility; it is advised that a man seeking to conceive should consult the doctor before taking any drug.
Other things that could cause male infertility include stress, ageing, radiation (x-rays, radiotherapy etc.), and excessive weight.

Nigerian Couple In UK Found Guilty Of Keeping Houseboy In Slavery For 24 Years
A Nigerian couple with British citizenship was found guilty on Tuesday of keeping a Nigerian immigrant enslaved for more than two decades, forcing him to work for no pay and threatening him with deportation if he tried to escape, prosecutors said.
Emanuel Edet, 61, and Antan Edet, 58, held their victim captive from the time he was brought to Britain when he was 14 years old, said the Crown Prosecution Service.
The husband and wife were convicted at Harrow Crown Court in northwest London on charges of child cruelty, slavery and assisting in illegal immigration.
They had told the teen when they brought him from Nigeria in 1989 that they would pay him and provide him with an education, prosecutors said.
Instead, the victim, now 40, was forced to cook, clean, garden and care for the couple's children without any pay for up to 17 hours a day, they said. He was forced to eat alone and typically slept on hallway floors, they said.
He got no education and had only very limited contact with his family and the outside world. The couple took his passport, and he had no identity documents, prosecutors said.
Prosecutor Damaris Lakin said the Edets told their captive he would be arrested as an illegal immigrant and deported if he left the house and contacted police.
"He believed this and felt trapped and completely dependent on the Edets," Lakin said in a statement. "Emanuel and Antan Edet have cruelly robbed this victim of 24 years of his life. They have treated him with complete contempt."
"This was a shocking case of modern day slavery," he said.
The convictions came on the first day of a two-day Trust Women conference in London on women's rights and human trafficking held by the Thomson Reuters Foundation.
Prosecutors said the Edets had changed the victim's name and added him to their family passport as their son when they brought him into Britain.

Couples who have sex once a week are the happiest
Three studies showed life satisfaction increases with frequency of sex, but levels off once people are having it once a week on average.
The association between happiness and sex once a week held true for men and women, regardless of age or the length of their relationship, researchers reported.
Washington, Nov. 18 (UPI) - Sex makes most people happy, however endless sex may not be necessary to keep a relationship happy. Once a week is enough for most couples, according to three studies conducted over the last four decades.
As important as sex is to a relationship, new research contradicts previous studies claiming more sex leads to more happiness. Although the study does not establish a causal relationship - that couples are more happy because they have sex or that happiness leads couples to have more sex -- but focuses instead that a connection exists between the two.
Researchers at the University of Toronto-Mississauga conducted three surveys of adults in the United States, finding the once-a-week number held true for men and women, regardless of age or length of relationship.
"Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week," said Amy Muise, a social psychologist at University of Toronto-Mississauga, in a press release. "Our findings suggest that it's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner, but you don't need to have sex everyday as long as you're maintaining that connection."
The first study analyzed responses from 11,285 men and 14,225 women who took the General Social Survey between 1989 and 2012. Their responses showed happiness tended to increase the more couples had sex, however happiness levelled off after averaging once a week.
The second study reinforced the often debated theory that money does not bring happiness. Based on responses from 138 men and 197 women, the difference in happiness between people having sex less than once a month compared to those doing it once a week was greater than the difference in happiness between people making $25,000 and $75,000 a year.
The third study, reviewing data collected three times during 14 years from 2,400 married couples did not show a strong link between sex and life satisfaction, but the couples were happier the more they had sex as it increased to once a week before levelling off.
Muise said levels of happiness as they relate to sex are specific to people, and the key is for partners to communicate about their needs, desires and satisfaction with life.
"People often think that more money and more sex equal more happiness, but this is only true up to a point," Muise said. "It's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner without putting too much pressure on engaging in sex as frequently as possible."
The study is published in the journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science.
