Following Chelsea's EPL victory, die-hard fan in Nigeria names new-born baby 'Antonio Moses'

Aftermath of Chelsea' EPL victory, a die-hard fan in Abakaliki has named his newly-delivered baby-boy Antonio Moses. On Friday night Chelsea defeated West Bromwich Albion 1-0 to win the league title with two matches to play.

The fan, Mathew Irondu, a Construction Engineer this morning said that he named the boy, born last Thursday after the club’s Coach Antonio Conte and Nigerian star, Victor Moses as his own way of celebrating the win.

According to him, the duo among other Chelsea players, were instrumental to the club’s stunning league success,
'this win is most significant for me because it is the first by Chelsea since I switched my supporter ship to the club from Arsenal FC. I had endured years of EPL drought from Arsenal which made me switch to Chelsea and I celebrated it this way because I don’t have money to make merriment'.
He continued too say,
'this is my first child and I fervently pray that his birth, a day before Chelsea’s league win, will bring good tidings to my family, the club and their fans across the globe'.

Global Cyberattack: Hackers demand ransome after hitting 99 countries

Hospitals, major companies and government offices have been hit by a massive wave of cyberattacks across the globe that seize control of computers until the victims pay a ransom.

Cybersecurity firm Avast said it had identified more than 75,000 ransomware attacks in 99 countries, making it one of the broadest and most damaging cyberattacks in history.

Avast said the majority of the attacks targeted Russia, Ukraine and Taiwan. But U.K. hospitals, Chinese universities and global firms like Fedex (FDX) also reported they had come under assault.

Europol said Saturday that the attack was of an "unprecedented level and requires international investigation."

The ransomware, called "WannaCry," locks down all the files on an infected computer and asks the computer's administrator to pay in order to regain control of them. The exploit was leaked last month as part of a trove of NSA spy tools.

The ransomware is spread by taking advantage of a Windows vulnerability that Microsoft (MSFT, Tech30) released a security patch for in March. But computers and networks that hadn't updated their systems were still at risk.

In the wake of the attack, Microsoft said it had taken the "highly unusual step" of releasing a patch for computers running older operating systems including Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.

"Affected machines have six hours to pay up and every few hours the ransom goes up," said Kurt Baumgartner, the principal security researcher at security firm Kaspersky Lab. "Most folks that have paid up appear to have paid the initial $300 in the first few hours."

Sixteen National Health Service (NHS) organizations in the UK have been hit, and some of those hospitals have canceled outpatient appointments and told people to avoid emergency departments if possible. The NHS said in a statement on Saturday that there was no evidence that patient information had been compromised.

In China, the internet security company Qihoo360 issued a "red alert" saying that a large number of colleges and students in the country had been affected by the ransomware, which is also referred to as "WannaCrypt." State media reported that digital payment systems at PetroChina gas stations were offline, forcing customers to pay cash.

"Global internet security has reached a moment of emergency," Qihoo360 warned.

Spanish telecom company Telefónica (TEF) was also hit with the ransomware. Spanish authorities confirmed the ransomware is spreading through the vulnerability, called "EternalBlue," and advised people to patch.

"It is going to spread far and wide within the internal systems of organizations -- this is turning into the biggest cybersecurity incident I've ever seen," U.K.-based security architect Kevin Beaumont said.

Fedex said it was "experiencing interference with some of our Windows-based systems caused by malware" and was trying to fix the problems as quickly as possible.

Russia's Interior Ministry released a statement acknowledging a ransomware attack on its computers, adding that less than 1% of computers were affected, and that the virus is now "localized." The statement said antivirus systems are working to destroy it.

Megafon, a Russian telecommunications company, was also hit by the attack. Spokesman Petr Lidov told CNN that it affected call centers but not the company's networks. He said the situation is now under control.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security, in a statement late Friday, encouraged people to update their operating systems. "We are actively sharing information related to this event and stand ready to lend technical support and assistance as needed to our partners, both in the United States and internationally," the department said.

Kaspersky Lab says although the WannaCry ransomware can infect computers even without the vulnerability, EternalBlue is "the most significant factor" in the global outbreak.

How to prevent it

Beaumont examined a sample of the ransomware used to target NHS and confirmed it was the same used to target Telefónica. He said companies can apply the patch released in March to all systems to prevent WannaCry infections. Although it won't do any good for machines that have already been hit.

He said it's likely the ransomware will spread to U.S. firms too. The ransomware is automatically scanning for computers it can infect whenever it loads itself onto a new machine. It can infect other computers on the same wireless network.

"It has a 'hunter' module, which seeks out PCs on internal networks," Beaumont said. "So, for example, if your laptop is infected and you went to a coffee shop, it would spread to PCs at the coffee shop. From there, to other companies."

According to Matthew Hickey, founder of the security firm Hacker House, Friday's attack is not surprising, and it shows many organizations do not apply updates in a timely fashion.

When CNNTech first reported the Microsoft vulnerabilities leaked in April, Hickey said they were the "most damaging" he'd seen in several years, and warned that businesses would be most at risk.

Consumers who have up-to-date software are protected from this ransomware. Here's how to turn automatic updates on.

It's not the first time hackers have used the leaked NSA tools to infect computers. Soon after the leak, hackers infected thousands of vulnerable machines with a backdoor called DOUBLEPULSAR.

Khloe Kardashian Gets Fed Up By Her 'Ungrateful' Family In Costa Rica

Like many family vacations, things don't always go as planned. And for the Kardashian/Jenner clan, that's exactly what happened during their Costa Rica vacation, as seen in a preview for this Sunday's Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

The trouble started after Khloe Kardashian, 32, told her sisters Kim and Kourtney and mom Kris Jenner that they're not spending enough quality time together.

Kim, 36, was not having any of it, and called Khloe a 'big bully' and that she should 'shut the f**k
up!'

It began when Khloe, who organized the vacation for her entire family, looked upset while sitting alone on the patio of their holiday home.

Although mom Kris Jenner complimented her in her bright yellow bathing suit, Khloe was not having any of it.

While Kris, Kim and Kourtney looked on, a frustrated Khloe said:'It's just interesting how I don't see you guys a lot.'

She continued: 'I take the time to come here thinking, great, this is time that I get to be with my sisters and my nieces and nephews and do all these things.'

Comedian I Go Dye Builds A Mansion For His Mum (PHOTO)

Ace humour merchant, I Go Dye, born Francis Agoda has done what every good child would want to do for their mum in a special way as the word reaching Weekend Groove has it that he has built a house for him mum.

Though the location of the house is still not known as at press time but its picture, through a very reliable source, has been made available to Weekend Groove. And it is certainly a beauty to behold.

The house, which seems to stand on its own ground, with all modern finishing, is a palatial edifice,
painted in all-white with stripes of gold to give off a picture of sheer splendour.

No doubt, the building must have put a huge dent in the comedian’s bank account, but it has been his life-long dream to do something special for his mum.

I Go dye who celebrated his 20 years in the industry recently has a story of ‘grass to grace’ to tell.

“Well, growing up wasn’t rosy at all, some said they had silver spoon but for me, there was no spoon at all, it was just creating means for myself to fend for myself,” he once said in an interview with Vanguard.

“All my early days were spent in the village with my grandmother, who nurtured me with so much traditional values that later amused my peers when I got back to primary school in Warri. There was so much difficulty for my age mates to comprehend my ideas and values of life. It was seen most times that I was saying things that were not achievable because they felt I knew more than my age. I had difficulty also conforming to their standard and it took me sometime to study their moral upbringing, which had so much difference from the way life was in the village and living with an old woman. More so, the challenges of life are so much, it took me strong personal conviction to stand firmly on my belief and dreams”.

ER24 responded to the scene 30 minutes after, but upon arrival, there was not much they could do as the man of god was already dead.

I’m Not Happy For Davido - Ibadan Alleged Babymama

Here’s how Nonye Ben-Nwankwo and Ademola Olonilua puts the report.

Pop singer, Davido, welcomed his second daughter, Hailey, in America from his second babymama, Amanda. While it seems like the world is happy for him, there is a particular lady, Ayomide Labinjo, who could not care less about the new addition to his family.

The young lady had accused the singer of impregnating her about three years ago and abandoning his responsibility as a father. Even though Davido has publicly denied the child, Labinjo had since dared him to come out for another DNA test but the singer has refused.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, the young lady said that she is not happy for the singer even though it seems the world is happy for him. She queried why he would take care of his other two children and be a doting father to them but refused to do the same to their alleged child, Mitchell, whom she claims to be his first child.

Our lawyer has sent a letter to Davido’s father since April 20, 2017, we have not got any response till now. I am not happy about this whole situation. Why would I be happy for Davido? He should be taking care of Mitchell the same way he is taking care of Imade and I know how he is going to take good care of this one. What is my own offence?” she queried.

When asked if she does not feel that the way he treats them could be a possible sign that the kid probably does not belong to the singer, she challenged him to have another DNA test.

“What do you mean please? Then why isn’t he coming out for the DNA since he is denying the little girl? Why has his father refused to get back to the lawyer? David is the father of my daughter, at least I was not raped. I know who impregnated me! Besides, if he doesn’t want to go for the DNA, he has siblings. Let them come out or probably go the traditional way to know if she is their daughter or not.

“I don’t know and I don’t care about any ‘Americana;’ all I want is for him to take care of Mitchell. She’s also his daughter and first child for that matter,” she said.

Rape Victim, 13, Gives Birth In Lagos

A 13-year-old girl, Endurance, who was allegedly raped and impregnated by a tailor in the Ajamgbadi area of Lagos State, has been delivered of a baby girl.

She was said to have given birth naturally and without any complication at the Igando General Hospital.

The Primary 5 pupil was alleged to have been raped by 42-year-old Lucky Emmanuel from August to
September 2016.

Saturday Punch learnt that the victim was discovered to be pregnant by her teachers after she was absent from school for about four months.

The Social Welfare team of the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender was said to have rescued her from Emmanuel’s house on Ogunyemi Street, Sabo, Ajamgbadi, from where she was taken to the Transit Home for Trafficked Children and Victims of Domestic Violence, Iyana-Ipaja.

The suspect was subsequently arrested by policemen from the Ilemba-Hausa division where the case was reported.

Emmanuel had said he used to patronise Endurance anytime she hawked plantain chips to his area after school hours, adding that he had known her for over six months.

He had claimed that he was divorced with two kids, saying he slept with her between August and September, 2016.

The Imo State indigene told government officials that on discovering that Endurance was pregnant, her family approached him and he accepted responsibility, adding that he gave them N22,000 and bought drinks to mark their engagement.

He also insisted that he gave  Endurance’s mother N2,000 for pregnancy scan and paid for the victim’s antenatal in addition to the N34,000 he gave the uncle as bride price.

While being interviewed by our correspondent during a parade at the police command headquarters at Ikeja, he said although he didn’t know Endurance age, he believed she was above 13.

“I met with her parents that I wanted to marry her and they agreed. We had started some traditional arrangements in preparation for the wedding and I had paid them about N80,000.

“I was surprised when her mother called me on the telephone to come. On getting there, she said somebody reported to the school authorities that her daughter was too young for marriage. That was why the school took it up.

“The girl and I have been together for over eight months now. I had sex with her twice before she became pregnant,” he said.

An official of OPD told Saturday Punch that the girl had been delivered of a baby girl in the transit home.

He said, “Endurance finally gave birth to a baby girl on Saturday, May 4, 2017, at about 8.15pm at the Igando General Hospital. What was surprising was that she gave birth through the vagina.

“She was released to her mother. When we queried the woman about not preventing the act and supporting the illegal union, she denied knowledge of the acts and the collection of various sums from the man.”

The Director of OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, urged parents and guardians to watch over their children and wards.

She said, “Kids can help their parents in business but this also makes them vulnerable, especially as hawkers. Whether the family agrees to marry off the young girl or not, this is still a crime of defilement and abuse of a minor; it’s not acceptable in Lagos State. He has been detained and will have his day in court. The government shall offer all support possible to help her stabilise her life.”

It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 3pm on Friday, thereby creating panic among residents of the area.

Sources told our correspondent that the officer, who was deployed to the oil firm by the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta, killed the two youths over a matter which was already being resolved between the
community youths from Ifie and Ekpan.

An eyewitness said an argument ensued when the youths from Ifie and Ekpan communities were negotiating job slots with an NPDC contractor who is handling a project at the company’s premises.

It was learnt that the officer left his duty post to the scene of the argument and shot into the air before shooting at the two youths, who died on the spot.

Security Guard On N25,000 Salary Steals N24.4m, Threatens Boss With Whistle-Blowing

On May 6, businessman and resident of Gwarimpa Housing Estate, FCT, Abuja, Benedict Emmanuel, noticed that a stack of foreign currency he kept in his house had disappeared.

But little did he know that his good-natured security guard, 40-year-old Alfred Andrew, a Bauchi State indigene, had suddenly become a millionaire, while keeping his home safe.

At 40, Andrew, who studied Mass Communication and Information Technology, went from joblessness to enrolling in an evangelical school, through which he became a pastor.

Yet, he said he needed more out of life.

Andrew said he moved to Plateau State to look for a job until the poor condition of the job forced him to move to Abuja where he took up a security guard job on a N25,000 salary in 2014.

But three years down the line, Andrew thought fate had finally smiled upon him when bundles of foreign currency fell on him while he was rifling through his boss’ belongings one day when the latter was out of the house.

He said, “That day, I was sweeping when I saw a key on the floor. I tried it on the padlock on my boss’ apartment and it opened. I went inside the house and was searching through his belongings when something fell on me from the top of his wardrobe.

“I then realised it was foreign currency. I climbed on a chair to see what was on the top of the wardrobe and noticed that there were currencies from different countries. They were so much. That was the first time I would see so much dollars. I have only seen such large amount in movies.

“I was tempted to take the money. Before, I had been hearing of whistle-blowers but I was not sure who to contact. I didn’t know who to report to. I didn’t have the number of the whistle-blowers (sic). I was scared. I didn’t know who to trust in Nigeria. I might tell someone and the person may turn things around against me.”

Andrew said he started to pick out of the bundles of currencies gradually whenever his boss was out of the house.

Then, he took the step of counting how many wrapped bundles of currency were on the wardrobe.

READ ALSO: Encouraging whistle-blowers with promised reward

“I confirmed from someone the amount in the bundles. He said it was N130m after it was converted.  I didn’t touch that one because it was sealed. I was only taking from those bundles,” he said.

According to him, for over a month after he started stealing out of the currencies, his boss did not notice.

He said he noticed that each time his boss travelled out, he came back with more foreign currencies.

He said he only checked whenever his boss was away from home to see if the money had increased or decreased. But every time he went into the room, he was always tempted to take part of it.

“If you just pulled a small amount, by the time you count it, there might be more than thirty dollar notes,” he said.

At a point, Andrew went beyond just pulling little amounts of cash from the bundles and took a few million-naira worth.

He said, “I took some amount and converted it to N24.4m and put it in my account.

When Andrew’s boss, Emmanuel, first noticed that a huge part of his cash was gone, he became suspicious of his security guard only when he discovered that the latter was using an iPhone 7 cell phone even though his salary was just N25,000.

When Andrew’s room was searched, expensive designer clothes were also found there.

He was apprehended when Emmanuel informed the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team.

At the police station, he confessed and N24 million was found in his account.

He also took the police to an apartment that he rented in town where expensive phones were recovered from his girlfriend.

Andrew said, “I bought clothes and mobile phones. I was not even able to wear any of the clothes because I bought them recently. Part of the money I had recently changed to naira was in my bag when I was searched.

“Last Friday when my boss discovered the cash missing, he ordered that nobody should go out of the compound and started searching everybody. His sister who is an official with the Department of State Services came also and checked my phone and bags.

“They took my passport, ATM cards and everything I had before handing me over to SARS. I told my oga I would implicate him by reporting him to EFCC (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission). He said he had been good to me, but I told him his wife had not given me food over the last three years. It is part of the reasons why I did what I did.

“Even when I was employed, I was told my salary would be increased every four months. I was told I would also be fed but that promise was not kept. My boss said the money was not his.”

Andrew said he knew that what he did was wrong but that anytime he asked his boss for money, he always told him he had no money even though he knew about the foreign currencies in the house.

The police have said the suspect would be charged to court soon.

Stop My Prosecution, Lagos Trader Who Attempted Suicide Begs Government

A Lagos textile dealer, Mrs. Taiwo Momoh, who recently attempted suicide in the Lagoon, has appealed to the government to stop her prosecution.

But she lamented her treatment in the hands of the police after she was rescued from jumping off the Third Mainland Bridge.

Momoh said she was put in a cell at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for four days, which further depressed her as neighbours started ridiculing her.

This is just as the Lagos State Office of the Public Defender said the government would give the 58-year-old medical assistance with a view to making her get over her suicidal thoughts.

Momoh had put off her shoes and was about taking a dive into the Lagoon late March, when she was rescued and handed over to officials of the Rapid Response Squad.

After she was taken to the office of the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, she lamented that she became suicidal after a bureau de change operator defrauded her of N18.7m.

She had said her Swiss textile creditor had been on her neck, adding that her situation became compounded after her shop was burgled.

During a visit to her Ajah residence on Thursday, Momoh pleaded with the government to drop the charges against her, which she said had subjected her to shame and ridicule.

She said, “I don’t know how I got to the Third Mainland Bridge. What is strange is that even if I am driving, I don’t take the bridge as it scares me. So for me to want to jump into it is strange, I believe it is a spiritual attack.

“All I can remember was that I left home alone. I got down from a cab. The driver didn’t try to stop me. I didn’t know where I was. I was disoriented, until I got to Alausa (RRS office) that I regained consciousness. I was in the CP’s office, who treated me well and even came to visit me the next day when I arrived home.

“What was painful to me was that the police locked me up at the SCIID for four days after I was arrested. I slept on the floor; they collected my phone. I had to wear the same dress for four days.

They didn’t give me food. It was on Monday that I was able to call my son, who then contacted a friend of mine. I was taken to Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court, where I was asked to enter a plea. How can I do that in my state of depression? I begged them to forgive me and let me go home.

“When I got back, I was still disturbed as I became conscious of people staring at me. Because of that, I didn’t go out for a while. Please just help me to beg the government not to prosecute me, I have suffered enough. I am scared.

“I never want to collect loan for business again in my life. It is a shameful thing, one should be satisfied with what one has.”

The Director of OPD, Mrs. Olubukola Salami, who consoled Momoh, said the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Health, and the agency were planning to secure medical treatment for her in line with the provisions of the Criminal Code, Section 235 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

Saturday Punch learnt that the government was considering dropping the charges against the businesswoman.

“The Attorney General is considering withdrawing the case,” a source said.

My husband’s Case Not In My Hands – Mercy Aigbe

Culled from Punch;

The saga in the home of the Gentry’s seems to be far from over as star actress, Mercy Aigbe’s husband, Lanre Gentry was remanded in prison during the week for failure to meet his bail condition.

When Saturday Beats reached out to the ace actress, she made it known that she has nothing to do with her husband’s predicament. She explained that the matter was reported to the appropriate agencies and they are handling the case according to the law.

She said, “The case is no longer between my husband and I. It is now between the Office of Public Defenders, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and my husband. The officer is the one handling the case.”

Aigbe in an emotional laden voice said that she wants her husband to know the gravity of what he has done because till date, she is still coughing out blood due to the beatings she got from him.

“I cannot be washing my dirty linen in public and that is why I do not want to go into details of my marriage. It is not in my place to send him to jail.

I only reported to the appropriate authorities and I just need him to show remorse for what he has done to me.

He does not know the gravity of what he has done to me, the pains that I feel right now and the trauma I have gone through.

I am still in pains and I am bleeding internally because I am still coughing out blood. Instead of him to be remorseful, he was busy going online to say all sorts of things about me and concocting lies.

He has been fabricating stories to taint my image because he knows I am the one with a reputation at stake. I intentionally did not say anything even though I have proof of everything I have to say.

Instead of my husband to show some sense of responsibility and own up to what he did, he was busy dragging my name in the mud,” Aigbe said.

She told Saturday Beats that she endured a lot in her seven-year-old marriage but she stayed put because of her children and the people who look up to her as a role model.

She said, “I endured all the things that I went through in his hands because of my children and also because of the fact that people look up to me as a role model. I have been through a lot and I pray and fast a lot so that things would go on smoothly.

I have been praying and enduring a lot but this last time, the beating was brutal and he almost killed me.”

The actress told Saturday Beats that Gentry kept claiming that she was promiscuous but that it is a false statement aimed at tarnishing her image.

Aigbe said it was never reported that she was promiscuous while she was a single lady, so why would she start such an act as a married woman.

“Before I got married, there was no scandal about me being promiscuous, no one could say that I was sleeping around; so why would I now do such as a married woman? If I were that promiscuous like he claims, how come no journalist has ever reported such stories about me? I have been working so hard to build my brand and now he wants to rubbish it,” she said.

She said that he husband’s major problem is his anger and although she had advised him to go for anger management classes, he refused.

“The problem with him is that he cannot control his anger and I have advised him on several occasions to see a therapist or enrol in anger management class to learn how to control his temper but he refused. He gets violent whenever he is angry and that is his problem.

There is no way a couple would not fight but it does not always have to lead to physical violence. On that fateful day, he hit my head on the wall just because I found out that he was having an affair with someone very close to me and we had an argument.

He came to beat me at my tailor’s place. He even beat my make-up artiste and broke her hand. It was from that place that I was rushed to the hospital very late that night. When he was beating me, he was acting as if he was possessed.

Ever since he had been beating me, he had never beaten me to this extent. It was as if he had made up his mind to kill me or blind me so that my career would end.

I don’t know why he is doing all this. I have offered to take him to church but whenever we get there, he would refuse to enter. I tried all my best. If only he went for therapy, all this would not have happened and I don’t have to stay with him till he kills me.

Imagine if I had died that day, I wonder what kind of cover up story he would have released to the public,” the actress said.

She made it clear that she was fighting for her life. “I am fighting for my life because if I die there would be no image to protect. I just want him to sign an undertaking that nothing would happen to me because a man who is capable of sending thugs to the house is capable of anything. Someone who can set me up and lie that I have mental illness can do anything. He should sign the undertaking and we should go our different ways. If not, I would leave the case to the appropriate agency and the law would take its full course,” Aigbe said.

Bin Laden's son Is Hell-Bent On Avenging His Father's Death After Becoming Al Qaeda Poster Boy

Osama bin Laden's son Hamza is poised to lead al Qaeda years after his father's death, personal letters seized in the raid that killed bin Laden have revealed.

Now, Hamza is about 28 years old, but he wrote one of the letters to his father when he was 22. A former FBI agent who has read the documents, which are now declassified, said that Hamza seems motivated and prepared to avenge his father.

Ali Soufan was an agent who also served as the bureau's lead investigator of al Qaeda after 9/11. He
said bin Laden's son was seen as the next possible leader of the terrorist organization when he was just a child,Principal among Hamza's messages is his desire for revenge.

'He's basically saying, "American people, we're coming and you're going to feel it. And we're going to take revenge for what you did to my father…Iraq…Afghanistan"…the whole thing was about vengeance,' Soufan said.

For a new episode of 60 Minutes, Soufan explained the importance of the personal letter, despite the fact that when Hamza wrote it he had not seen his father for years.

'He tells him that…he remembers "every look…every smile you gave me, every word you told me. I consider myself to be forged in steel. The path of jihad for the sake of God is what we live,"' Soufan said about Hamza.

Hamza has been a prominent figure in several propaganda videos for al Qaeda, even as a young boy. He was filmed calling for terrorist attacks on London, Washington and Paris in an audio message released by the organization in 2015.

He has recorded four of theses types of messages in the last two years.

This January, Hamza was placed on a State Department terror watch list and named a 'specially designated global terrorist' - the same classification Osama had.

He was a poster kid for the al Qaeda…and for members of al Qaeda, who were indoctrinated with these propaganda videos, he means a lot to them,' Soufan said.

Soufan said Hamza also uses the same terminology and sentences that his father once used.

Three suicide bombers were killed in the early hours of Saturday when they attempted to infiltrate the Department of Works of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State‎.The incident occurred at about 1.10 a.m.

A security guard at the University was also killed from the explosions which occurred at about 1:10 a.m. The corpses have being evacuated by rescuers from the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, and Borno State Emergency Management Agency, BOSEMA, Premium Times

Saturday’s attack is the latest in the series of attacks by suicide bombers on Borno communities. It also marks at least the third on the Maiduguri university in 2017 with a professor among the victims of earlier attacks.

The suicide attacks by suspected members of the Boko Haram have occurred despite the terror group losing most of the territory it once controlled to the Nigerian military.

The girls were released as part of a prisoner swap that also saw the government release an undisclosed number of Boko Haram suspects.

FG Bars Chibok Girls From Sharing Experiences With Parents

A relative of one of the rescued Chibok girls, Peter Joseph, says the Federal Government has barred the girls from telling their parents or relatives about their experiences in Boko Haram captivity.

Joseph said this during a programme on Al Jazeera titled, “The Stream.”

He said his niece was one of the 21 schoolgirls rescued in October 2016 while his sister is still in Boko Haram captivity.

Joseph said over six months since their rescue, the schoolgirls had not been united with their families.
He said in December last year, the girls were allowed to return to Chibok but were kept in a government facility where their parents visited them. He said the girls were not allowed to go to their parents’ homes.

Joseph said, “I think there is something that the Federal Government does not want us to know and that is why they are keeping them away. Even when they [the schoolgirls] travelled to Chibok, they were not allowed to go to their houses.

“They were kept in government facilities in Chibok and anyone who visited them was made to sign a register, state the village where they came from, whom they wanted to see and then a time limit was given, after which you were asked to leave and there were certain things that you were not allowed to ask the girls.

“You can’t ask them about their experiences in Sambisa Forest. I mean, we don’t get it. Even now that 82 girls have been rescued, what has the government done about them? Up till today, the families have not met the girls.”

Joseph berated the Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan, for saying that the girls were free to leave the government facilities anytime they wanted.

He said, “The Women Affairs minister is not saying the truth about this. What does she mean by the girls can leave at anytime when they don’t even allow family members or people that are concerned about them to come close to them?

“I wish she was here so that I would be able to ask her some questions personally because this thing has been bothering us the members of the family. The fact still remains that the Nigerian government needs to be open to the family members; the government needs to be open to everyone that is concerned.

“We don’t get it. I mean, are you trying to hide something? Is there something they don’t want us to hear from the girls? What are they hiding from us?”

Joseph said it seemed the girls had been transferred from Boko Haram captivity to government captivity.

He said, “Nobody is allowed to see them. So, it’s like another imprisonment, but this one has to do with the government.”

However, a top government official told our correspondent that the girls were being kept away from their families and friends for security reasons.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the media, said the girls were being prevented to speak because investigations were ongoing.

He said, “We are preventing the girls from saying too much because we don’t want them to say anything about their location that could tip-off the terrorists. We are still negotiating the release of 113 girls and any sensitive information that is released could jeopardise negotiations or investigations.”

All efforts to get Alhassan proved abortive as her mobile phone was switched off as of the time of filing this report.

Sierra Leone rejects $7.8m offer for the 709 carats diamond found by a pastor

The government of Sierra Leone on Thursday rejected a $7.8 million bid for one of the world's largest uncut diamonds found by a pastor saying it failed to meet its own valuation.
The 709 carats diamond was discovered by Emmanuel Momoh, a Sierra Leonean pastor who found it in the Kono district of the country in March and handed it over to the government to sale.
According to the chief auctioneer and head of the National Minerals Agency,  Sahr Wonday, he said five bids were handed to auctioneers in a sealed brown envelope, ranging from $2 million to $7.8 million.
He said the top bid was made by a man in a white shirt and light trousers on behalf of Belgium diamond dealer Ray Diam BVBA but was actually rejected as it fails to meet the country's valuation.
We've decided not to sell the diamond today because the highest bid price ... does not match the government reserve price,' He told a packed room.

Wonday said the government will be going to an international auction in either Antwerp, Belgium or Tel Aviv in Israel to get substantial offers for the stone.
Reacting to the diamond auction fails, Pastor  Emmanuel said:  'I was unhappy with the highest bid price," said Momoh. His stone, he said, "is worth a lot more than $7.8 million."
The diamond is the biggest to be in Sierra Leone since 1970, when the 969-carat Star of Sierra Leone was dug up.
