Enugu massacre: Nimbo residents flee homes as herdsmen return

Residents of Nimbo community, in Uzo-Uwani Council Area of Enugu State are fleeing home following fresh reports that Fulani herdsmen have returned to the area.

Nimbo came under herdsmen attack on April 24, leading to the death of several persons, with many others critically injured.

While the villagers who had hitherto fled the town on the wake of the attack had just returned, farmers were said to have sighted the herdsmen on Monday morning.

The farmers, who were on the way to their farms ran back and reported to the community.

This is coming nearly one week to the burial of residents who lost their lives during the attack. The burial is expected to take place on June 17.

The development has raised fresh fears and tension in the community as many residents have reportedly fled, despite the presence of security personnel at strategic places in the community.

It was equally gathered that the Enugu State Government as well as police authorities have been alerted on the new development.

It was learnt that consequently, the Enugu Police Commissioner, Emmanuel Ojukwu had mobilized the Area Commander for Nsukka M. B Kuryas who along with the Divisional Police Officer combed various farmlands in the area on Tuesday, apparently in search of the herdsmen.

Confirming the development at his palace, the traditional ruler of Nimbo community, Igwe John Akor said: “There is fresh fear in our community. My people have not gone to the farms since Monday. Some even fled the community on receiving the information. We have contacted the relevant authorities to report this latest development.

“Nothing is as offensive and hurting as the fact that people who were killed few weeks ago are still in the mortuary and those injured still recuperating only for the killers to return here for grazing. My people are still mourning and we have let the president to know how pained we are”.

Igwe Akor demanded that herdsmen should leave their territory, stressing that the economic potentials of the community had been seriously hampered since the incident.
