People working to renovate an ancient church building have been shocked after they came upon human skull and bones under one of the pews.
The human skull and bones were discovered hidden under a pew inside the village church that has not been used for more than 10 years.
According to Daily Mail, the church is a 6th Century Llangiwg Church in Rhydyfro, near Swansea, and the human remains were found there by volunteers who were working to restore the historic building.
It is unclear how old the bones are but the Grade II-listed church has not been used as a place of worship since at least 2004.
Police have now sealed off the church and launched an investigation. Forensics experts are also carrying out an examination on the bones.
Ann Lewis, chairman of the Llangiwg Community Association, said: 'We moved a pew and lifted a plinth and looked down and saw a skull and some bones staring back at us.
'We won't know what else is down there until the floor boards are lifted. One of the boys from the probation service, who was helping us, had quite a fright and ran outside.
'The police are treating the church like a crime scene and we are not allowed back in until an archaeologist has carried out a full investigation.'
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: 'Bones were discovered during renovation work at the property. The bones have been recovered and are currently subject to forensic examination.'
The church's renovation work will be put on hold while police investigate.
