Tailor stabs colleague to death over N200

A tailor, Ifeanyi John, is now in police net for allegedly stabbing his colleague, Anthony Kalu, 28, to death, following an argument that ensued over N200 fine.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at Number 39, Bawas Street by Umuwaya Road, Umuahia, Abia State.

The tailors, mostly from Edda in Afikpo-South Local Government Council of Ebonyi State, were said to have gathered for their monthly meeting at the venue but the suspect, who allegedly failed to attend the meeting, stayed back in his makeshift workshop doing some work.

It was also gathered that over 15 tailors displaced by the relocation of Umuahia Main Market to Ubani had been using the venue of the meeting as their joint workshop and had shared things in common as kinsmen.

According to an eyewitness, trouble started when the victim, who was reportedly appointed by his colleagues to collect N200 absenteeism fine from the suspect, demanded the fine from the suspect in his makeshift shop.

The suspect was said to have accused the victim of looking for his trouble.

The source said that the suspect had threatened to deal with the victim for always antagonising him.

The source added that the suspect ruptured the victim’s throat with a pair of scissors which pierced through the back of the neck.

“When he stabbed the victim the first time, some of the tailors who were mediating in the matter held the victims hands and in the process, the suspect stabbed him in the neck with a pair of scissors,” the source said.

The victim was later rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where he was certified dead as he had already given up the ghost on the way, according to the source.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command, Mr. Udeviotu Onyeke, confirmed the incident and said that the suspect had been arrested.

Onyeke, who said the suspect would be charged with murder, added that investigations had also commenced.
