A group under the aegis of Independent Service Delivery Monitoring ‎Group has asked security agencies to investigate the alleged threat by the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, to some electoral officers in the just conducted legislative rerun election in the state.

The Director of Mobilisation and Communication of the ISMDG, Ms Faith Nwadishi, said in a press statement on Thursday that the threats alleged to have been made by Wike to an electoral officer to keep to the terms of a bribe deal or be killed was disturbing and should be duly investigated.

A telephone conversation allegedly made between Wike and some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was leaked where the former was threatening to kill INEC staff for refusing to play along.

Reacting to the controversy, Nwadishi said, “The recent audio recording of Governor Nyesom Wike where he allegedly threatened to kill Electoral officials who fail to keep to the arrangements of a bribe he allegedly paid to them is most worrisome and should be investigated immediately.”

She also called on the leadership of the Indepedent National Electoral Commission to “commence a full scale investigation into the culpability of its staff in the abnormalities that occasioned the Rivers rerun election.”

The group frowned at the involvement of security operatives in ballot box snatching, intimidation and other violent acts in the rerun election.
