President Buhari Officially Revokes Yar'Adua's Tenure Policy in Federal Civil Service...See Details

President Muhammadu Buhari who just returned to the country after a 10-day vacation in London, has ordered the suspension of the tenure policy in the federal civil service with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on Monday by Winifred Oyo-Ita, head of the civil service of the federation, President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of tenureship in the federal civil service, saying it was with immediate effect while all concerned were urged to comply accordingly.

The late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua introduced the policy, which set a four-year tenure renewable only once for permanent secretaries in the civil service in line with the 1999 constitution.

“The federal government has suspended the tenure policy in the federal civil service with immediate effect. The directive was contained in a circular to all ministries departments and agencies,” read the statement signed on Oyo-Ita’s behalf by Haruna Imrana, director communication at the office of the head of service of the federation.

“The circular which conveyed the president’s directive on the suspension said the suspension is with immediate effect and all concerned are to comply accordingly.”

The spokesperson said with this circular, the eight-years tenure policy for directors, which was introduced some years back, has now been suspended.

He said the implication was that civil servants could now stay in service until they are 35 years in service or they turn 60.
