Accompanied by four aspirants in the APC primary election, both men interacted freely with the jubilant crowd which welcomed them during the inspection of the ongoing second east circular road in the state capital.
The four aspirants are: Peter Esele, former president of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Charles Airhiabvere, a retired major general; Emmanuel Arigbe-Osula, a former deputy minority leader in the house of representatives; and Ebegue Amadasu, a professor.
“I am happy that you are happy. When you are happy, I am also happy, and we need your prayers to protect ourselves because once God shield us we are strong,” Oshiomhole said while waving to the cheering crowd.
“Let me quickly introduce the…,” and he paused, as reached for the right hand of Obaseki, and as if well planned, the people started yelling: “Next governor! Next governor!”
An elderly woman spoke on behalf the community. She offered prayers for the governor, declaring that the people had endorsed Obaseki.
After that, Oshiomhole bought corn from a petty trader, and others in his entourage joined in patronising the lucky woman.
Reactions have trailed the action, especially on social media. While some see nothing wrong with it, others believe it’s a campaign gimmick.
Apart from Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, who is fond of relating with people on the street, key political figures like Rochas Okorocha, Imo state governor, and Iyiola Omisore, a gubernatorial aspirant in Osun state, have also have chewed corn on the streets in the past.
