People are still in shock after unknown gunmen suspected to be cultists and armed robbers attacked the convoy of Cross River State Deputy Governor killing a police inspector.
A police inspector was killed on Thursday evening after cultists attacked the driver to the pilot vehicle attached to the convoy of the State Deputy Governor, Prof. Evara Esu.
The Independent revealed that the policeman died during a gun battle with members of a cult group during which two police patrol vans were set ablaze.
Narrating how the incident happened, a source told Independent on Friday afternoon: “After the executive council meeting at the Governor’s office in Calabar yesterday, the pilot vehicle led other cars as they escorted the deputy governor to his house.
“After dropping him off, the vehicle proceeded to drop the security men in the vehicle in their houses. While they were driving along that Goldie Street axis, they ran into a traffic jam caused by a group of cultists operating in the area.
The cultists, numbering over 20, were armed with guns and machetes. When the cultists descended on the pilot vehicle, they shot the driver and drove off with the car. The other people in the car scampered for safety."
Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Irene Ugbo confirmed the killing of the policeman, adding that the vehicle has since been recovered and returned to the governor’s office.
The police assured that the command will leave on stone un-turn in her effort towards riding the state of the activities of miscreants but residents particularly in Calabar South area of the state capital now live in fear has the spade of robbery, kidnapping and cult clashes have increased.
