Ogun police to treat 'omo onile' as murderers

The police in Ogun State say they have declared war on land speculators, popularly called land grabbers or omo onile.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said in a statement on Sunday that the Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali, had directed that anyone caught fomenting trouble over land-related issues should be charged with murder, kidnapping or armed robbery.

Adejobi added that the police decided to deal decisively with land grabbers in order to protect the “relative peace Ogun State is presently enjoying”.

The statement read in part, “The Ogun State Police Command has declared war on land speculators and grabbers whose activities have been on the increase in recent times.

“The Commissioner of Police, Abdulmajid Ali… directed that anyone or group of hoodlums fomenting trouble or attacking and injuring innocent people in Ogun State on any land or land-related matter be arrested and charged to court with armed robbery, murder and kidnapping, as the case may be.

“The Commissioner of Police vowed to deal decisively with any land speculator/ grabbers, particularly in the Ota, Ifo, Ofada, Mowe, Ibafo, Ogijo areas and any other part of Ogun State, who may want to truncate the peaceful security arrangement presently being enjoyed in the state.”

The police assured residents of the state that security structures had been put in place to checkmate violence-minded people. The command also urged the residents to contact the CP via SMS on 08055885588 in order to report land grabbers.
