Even as the dust of the killing in Enugu community by herdsmen is yet to settle, the convoy of Governor Rochas Okorocha on Thursday while on its way to the airport along Akachi road, New Owerri rescued a Keke NAPEP operator (commercial tricyclist) who was attacked by a herdsmen.
A source in the convoy of the governor, who confined in The AUTHORITY narrated that the herdsmen were moving their cows along the road for grazing when suddenly the keke operator who almost rammed into the cows applied his brake.
Despite not hitting any of the cows, the source disclosed that the herdsmen descended on the tricyclist while the occupants ran away for safety. The herdsmen were said to have struck at the tricycle several times with their knives before some security men in the convoy of the governor broke away to rescue the operator.
On sighting the security men led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) the source said the herdsmen fled to a nearby bush. Not satisfied, the security men in the governor’s convoy ran after him. After several hours of combing the bush and shooting at the direction, the herdsmen could not be found.
According to the source, they had to wait till 5pm at the bush part since they had already missed the rest of the convoy, but added that they left the scene disappointed as the herdsmen were nowhere to be found.
Meanwhile, Governor Okorocha has empowered traditional rulers in the state to avert the attack of herdsmen. To ensure a safe community in the state, the governor has announced that the monarchs be the chief security officers of their state.
Governor Okorocha gave the new status to the monarchs while addressing them at the Government House shortly after the weekly security meeting in the state.
He charged them to take absolute control of security in their various autonomous communities and to also ensure peaceful co-existence between their people and people from other areas living in their midst.
