Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has declared that no official of the Independent national Electoral Commission (INEC) has powers to cancel results already declared by the returning officers in the respective constituencies.
The governor was speaking against the backdrop of the insistence by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Aniedi Ikoiwak, that the commission had not released any results other than the nine state constituency and one federal constituency results announced on Sunday.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state has also called on INEC to cancel results of the re-run elections on grounds of irregularities in the conduct of the polls.
Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt yesterday, Wike insisted that no INEC official was empowered to cancel a result already declared by a returning officer and said those calling for the cancellation of the results should do so according to the provisions of the law.
He also disclosed that the state government has compiled videos of the atrocities allegedly committed by the military across the state during the rerun elections, saying that the videos would be released to the public “at the appropriate time”.
He said, “The military-orchestrated violence in the state could be part of a plot by the APC to declare a state of emergency on the state on the premise of heightened propaganda.”
