The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Joseph Mbu has said that the constitutional responsibilities of the police have been hijacked as he lamented that indiscipline, corruption, low self esteem among officers of the Police force have tarnished the image of Police in the country.
He advised the Officers and men of Nigeria Police to redeem the image of the force.
Mbu, stated this in Abeokuta, yesterday, while addressing Senior Officers and Seven Officers of Ogun State Command newly promoted to the position of the Chief Superintendent of Police in the Command saying there was the need for the officers to eschew all forms of conduct that had given bad image about the force among Nigerians.
According to him, indiscipline, corruption, low self esteem among others are some of the factors responsible for series of unprofessional conduct among policemen in the country.
He stressed that, all efforts must be geared towards redeeming the battered image of the police before Nigerians and other international Communities.
“Policemen in Nigeria cannot compete with their counterpart in the military due to low level of education among officers .Most officers are not behaving in accordance with their ranks and this has made other sister security agencies in the country such as Federal Road Safety Commission, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps among others, to hijack the constitutional responsibilities of the police”, he said .
The Assistant Inspector General of Police charged the officers to brace up with their responsibilities
to safe the police job from impending collapse and leave good legacies for their subordinate.
Mbu who appealed to the officers to rise up and become agents of positive change, encourage them to desist from excessive crave for juicy positions to make money noting that most of the good eggs in the Nigeria Police force are gradually attaining retirement age.
Commending the Commissioner of Police in the state, Abdul-Majeed Ali and the authorities of the command for what he called professional conduct, Mbu said the operation of the command has greatly improved compare to what was on ground before the arrival of Ali.
Earlier in his remark, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Abdul-Majeed Ali charged the newly promoted Chief Superintendent of Police to see their new post as a big challenge and as opportunity to contribute their quota to the development of the force.
Highpoint of the event was the decoration of the seven new Chief Superintendent of Police in the command with their new ranks supervised by the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2, Joseph Mbu.
