Ex-militants protest alleged deductions from allowances
Hundreds of ex-militants, yesterday, disrupted traffic for several hours on Olu Obasanjo Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as they protested against alleged deductions from their N65,000 monthly allowance by their leaders.
The protesters accused a new generation bank of allegedly conniving with their leaders to rob them of a large portion of their entitlements.
According to them, sometimes their leaders pay them N20,000 or N15000 instead of the N65,000 approved for them.
They said that after their training at Obubra in Cross River State, they opened individual accounts but surprisingly their monies were paid to a single account operated by their leaders at the end of which the leaders pay them peanuts.
The protesters caused a gridlock on some parts of Port Harcourt as motorists were forced to seek other routes to their destinations.
Meantime, the Rivers State Police Command has said that it had uncovered alleged plot by some persons to disrupt the peace of the state with a protest over the murder of a bus driver last week Friday.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr Chris Ezike in a statement, yesterday, said the Police will not fold its arms and allow anyone plunge the state into crisis.
“Information and intelligence available to the Rivers State command indicate that some unpatriotic elements whose identities are yet unknown have perfected plans to carry out massive demonstration/protests under the guise of venting their anger in the unfortunate killing of a bus driver by a policeman on August 7, 2015.
“Against this background therefore, the Command cannot fold its arms and watch hoodlums/miscreants and all manners of person for whatever motives and/or interests take over the streets, molest innocent Citizens, cause damage to property and endanger the lives of law abiding citizens,” he said.
“The Command therefore, warns that any such demonstration/protests is illegal, ill motivated and constitute a threat to peace, law order. Persons who engage in such illegal acts shall be arrested and prosecuted.”
