The Punch reports that the youths numbering about a hundred marched in the streets in Port Harcourt in Rivers state on Tuesday, July 5.
The group under the aegis of the National Youth Council of Nigeria called against destruction of oil facilities and other vices in the region. Militants in the region have claimed responsibility for series of attacks on oil facilities with the most notable being the Niger Delta Avengers.
The youths marched from First Artillery to Azikiwe road in Port Harcourt with placards bearing several inscriptions such as ‘We need peace in the Niger Delta’, ‘Attacks on oil facilities must stop’, ‘Support Belemaoil to restore peace in the region, and ‘We don’t need cultism’.
Mr. Sukubo Sara-Igbe who is the president of the group in the state said the rise in criminal activities necessitated the decision to embark on the protest. He said youths in the region were paying dearly for the activities of the militants as the economy and well-being was low.
