Boko Haram kills 18, burns houses in Borno

No fewer than 25 persons were killed and many others injured when Boko Haram insurgents on Friday launched a renewed attack on a small community in Borno State near the border with Adamawa State, the Cable News Network reports.

SaharaReporters however reports that local vigilance sources in the area said Boko Haram fighters stormed the remote town of Kwata Mai Tagarri near Lassa in Askira- Uba local government area of Borno State and killed 18 people.

The insurgents also burnt down five homes that were still standing after the Islamist terrorist group struck the community last year.

A member of a vigilance group in Mussa District disclosed that the insurgents rode into the town in two vehicles and a motorbike, opening fire indiscriminately on helpless civilians.

“They came exactly 6:30 a.m. and continued their operations till around 10 a.m., without anyone to challenge them,” said Dauda Yusuf who spoke with SaharaReporters correspondent on the telephone from Biu. “They killed at least 18 people,” he added.

According to Yusuf, many residents of the besieged town had fled to an internally displaced people’s camp in Biu town.

“It is just unfortunate that when we were supposed to be farming, we were chased out from our homes,” he said.

Another member of the group, Yakubu James, bemoaned the absence of the military from their community. “We don’t have military presence in our villages except for Askira Uba town. It makes us vulnerable to the attackers. They have succeeded in almost wiping out our people,” James said.

According to SaharaReporters, sources identified one Jarrafu Tizza as the local leader of the insurgents terrorising the residents of Chibok, Damboa and Askira Uba respectively. They said Tizza and his gangs were now moving freely in Mussa community.

Askira Uba, which is in the southern part of Borno State, shares a border with Adamawa State. It is located about 62 miles from Biu, the largest town in the area.
