Billionaire Judge, Abdu-Kafarati to Deliver Ruling on Bukola Saraki's High Court Case Today

Billionaire Judge, Abdu-Kafarati to Deliver Ruling on Bukola Saraki's High Court Case Today

Senator Bukola Saraki

A billionaire Federal High Court Judge will today in Abuja give his ruling on a legal effort by the Senate President to scuttle his trial for corruption before the Code of Conduct Tribunal.

Less than one month after recusing himself from the case, Justice Abdukadir Abdu-Kafarati of the Federal High Court in Abuja will today, give his ruling on a legal effort by embattled Senate President, Bukola Saraki to scuttle his trial for corruption before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

It was reported that the senate president submitted a legal application to the Federal High Court claiming that the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), where he is on trial for corruption and false assets declaration, had violated his fundamental human rights.

Earlier, Justice Kafarati had recused himself from the case following an expose by SaharaReporters revealing the judge's reputation for being compromised by wealthy or politically connected clients.

According to SaharaReporters, Saraki’s lawyer on his human rights application, Prince Ajibola Oluyede, has had a long relationship with Justice Kafarati. Several lawyers told SaharaReporters that Oluyede, who also defended wanted drug baron and Nigerian senator, Buruji Kashamu, was known for compromising Justice Kafarati on numerous legal cases on the judge's docket.

SaharaReporters also revealed that agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have discovered no less than N2 billion in Justice Kafarati’s bank accounts. The judge told EFCC operatives that the vast amount of money were proceeds from his farming enterprises.

It can be recalled that news of Saraki’s legal application in the Federal High Court in Abuja caught members of the public by surprise since the substantive matter of the application that the CCT was violating his human rights because the tribunal allegedly has no jurisdiction to try him, was already considered by the Supreme Court of Nigeria. On February 5, 2016, the Supreme Court ruled that the CCT has the competence to try Saraki for corruption.

Nigerian Navy Arrests Suspected Pipeline Vandals, Destroys Illegal Refineries

Nigerian Navy Arrests Suspected Pipeline Vandals, Destroys Illegal Refineries

The Nigerian Navy has arrested six persons suspected to be engaged in pipeline vandalism and illegal oil refining in Rivers State, according to Premium Times.

Military officers have busted a syndicate of oil pipeline vandals in the Niger-Delta region of Nigeria affirming Buhari's commitment to pipeline security.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Navy said the suspects were picked up from a large warehouse at Ogbogoro Uzoba waterside, around Choba in Port Harcourt.

“The warehouse is suspected to serve as a storage facility for illegally refined products,” the naval headquarters said in the statement by Christian Ezekobe, a Commodore and Director of Information.

“Also discovered in the facility include three wooden boats containing about 20,000 litres of suspected illegally refined AGO, 350 drums, several GP and metal tanks ranging from 1,000, 5,000 and 10,000 litres storage capacity as well as seven pumping machines.”

The arrest came as President Muhammadu Buhari threatened to descend heavily on pipeline vandals in the same manner as Boko Haram terrorists.

The navy also said a patrol team‎ from NNS DELTA discovered and destroyed two illegal refineries in Jones creek in Warri South West local Government Area of Delta State. The items destroyed at the site, according to Mr. Ezekobe, include a Cotonou boat laden with about 66,000 litres of suspected stolen crude oil, 4 GP storage tanks measuring 500 litres each.

“The GP tanks contain 2,000 metric tons of products suspected to be illegally refined AGO,” said Mr. Ezekobe.

“Other items discovered at the site are 50 Jerry cans measuring 50 litres each containing 2.5 MT of products suspected to be illegally refined AGO, pumping machine, large metal tanks and a Cotonou boat.”

The statement further said‎ a Naval Patrol team deployed from NNS BEECROFT intercepted a gang which specialized in vandalizing and siphoning petroleum products from NNPC pipelines in the Atlas cove area.

The gang were arrested by a naval team on routine surveillance patrol of the area who discovered they were loading PMS from the NNPC Single point mooring at Atlas cove.

“On sighting the naval team, the suspects jumped into the water to evade arrest,” said Mr. Ezekobe.

“In view of this, the patrol team confiscated the equipment they use for the illicit act including a wooden Cotonou boat laden with 245 empty drums measuring 250 litres each, 91 empty Jerry cans measuring 25 litres each, and 21 drums of 250 litres each loaded with stolen Premium Motor Spirit.”

NFF crisis:Keyamo asks IG to arrest, prosecute Giwa

NFF crisis:Keyamo asks IG to arrest, prosecute Giwa

Human right lawyer, Festus Keyamo on Thursday asked the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Solomon Arase to arrest and prosecute Chris Giwa for his alleged threat to take over the Headquarters of the Nigeria Football federation (NFF).

Keyamo in a petition letter dated April 14 and addressed to the IGP, said "In the last few days, one Chris Giwa has threatened to take over the occupation of the Headquarters of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), citing a non-existent court order in that respect. The said Chris Giwa has indeed taken steps to carry out that threat by bringing thugs and physically attempting to force his way into the Headquarters of the NFF on Friday, April 8, 2016."

According to him, he wrote the petitioned on behalf of   Amaju Pinnick led board of NFF.

"Kindly note that, THERE IS NO COURT ORDER ANYWHERE mandating the said Chris Giwa to take over any office or duties of the NFF. In a brazen and blatant disregard for the rule of law and pending court orders, the said Chris Giwa has gone on air to announce the purported dissolution of various Committees and the State Executive Committees set up by the NFF," Keyamo said in the petition.

According to the lawyer, the combined effect of the foregoing actions of Chris Giwa is the creation of crises and instability in Nigerian football management which has led to the intervention by FIFA.

"In its intervention, FIFA declared Chris Giwa assertion as a false alarm and directed Chris Giwa to desist from such actions. Despite FIFA’s intervention, the said Chris Giwa has continued in his actions," Keyamo also said in the petition.

"Owing to the sensitive nature of football administration in Nigeria, physical and violent altercations are bound to occur if Chris Giwa is permitted to continue overheating the polity. We are, therefore, by this petition urging you to arrest and prosecute Chris Giwa for inciting disturbances," part of the petition also read.

Dambazau: Boko Haram using herders/farmers crisis as cover to attack Nigerians

Dambazau: Boko Haram using herders/farmers crisis as cover to attack Nigerians

Abdulrahman Dambazau

Interior minister Abdulrahman Dambazau says Boko Haram insurgents are using the pastoralist/sedentary farmer conflict as a cover to terrorize Nigerians.

While insisting that there was a need to resolve the persistent crisis between farmers and herders, the Minister said apart from the insurgents, there were other opportunistic criminal angles to the conflict.

Dambazau made this claim while speaking at the opening ceremony of the “strategic stakeholders meeting on the pastoralist/sedentary farmer conflict in Nigeria” on Thursday in Abuja.

While insisting that there was a need to resolve the persistent crisis between farmers and herders, the Minister said apart from the insurgents, there were other opportunistic criminal angles to the conflict.

“Indications are also that there are opportunistic criminal angles to this conflict, in the nature of cattle-rustling, armed robbery and kidnapping.”

He said the conflict mostly happens in the Niger-Benue river basin area, adding that the conflict also spawns to the south-eastern and western Nigeria.

Dambazau who lamented that the conflict was among the issues of grave implication to Nigeria’s internal security, said the primary objective of the meeting was to understand the problems underlying the conflict and to develop strategies for solving it.

He added, “A further objective is to identify any laws and regulations that impact on the conflict. This will in turn inform a design of a definitive policy intervention, which will see multi-level, convergent action that will in turn lead to an abatement of this conflict.”

The Minister stressed that stakeholders should also consider the larger West and Central Africa region in arriving at an understanding of the Niger-Benue basin as an arena of conflict because pastoralists converge seasonally to graze their cattle in the area.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Bassey Akpanyung who spoke earlier, said it was high time something was done to end the farmers/herders conflict in the country which has claimed thousands of lives and property worth millions.

Stakeholders at the meeting were to also design a parameter for hosting a larger conference targeted towards proffering workable plans to end the conflict.

Buhari very strict on money issues-Osinbajo

Buhari very strict on money issues-Osinbajo

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari is very strict on money matters.

Osinbajo disclosed this at the Old Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday at the presentation of "The Essentials of Beauty Therapy" written by the wife of the president, Hajiya Aisha Muhammadu Buhari.

The vice president said Mrs Buhari should not expect large donations from him and the president as they were still receiving half salaries.

Osinbajo, who noted that he represented Buhari at the event, said he (the vice president) was pleased to be associated with the presentation of the book.

"The president and I are on half salaries. The president is very strict on money issues. So, don't expect me to make a large donation,", he said.

He noted that the day commemorated the second anniversary of the abduction of the over 200 Chibok girls, assuring that they were still alive and would be rescued.

The vice president, who was the special guest of honour at the event, stated that if Mrs Buhari had not gone to school, she would not have had the opportunity to impact on others.

Mrs Buhari said the proceeds from the launch would be used to cater for victims of insurgency and mal-nourished children in internally displaced persons camps.

Earlier, the chairman of the occasion, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by his wife, Senator Oluremi, commended support for victims of insurgency.

Tinubu lauded Mrs Buhari for her effort and urged generous donations, noting that the proceeds from the book launch was  for the rebuilding in the northeast.

The book, reviewed by Dr Vivian Oputa,  is designed as a workbook for the students, practitioners, tutors and provides information relevant to their specific needs in simple-to-understand language.

Contents are based around the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) Vocational Enterprise Institutions National Innovation Diploma in Cosmetology and Beauty Therapy international syllabus.

The event was attended by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir David Lawal, Head of Civil Service of the Federation Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, Emir of Birnin Gwari Mallam Zubairu Jibril Mai Gwari II, Pastor Tunde Babare, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, ministers, among others.

President, governors should resign before elections — Maitama Sule

President, governors should resign before elections — Maitama Sule

Alhaji Yusuf Maitaima Sule

Nigeria’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, has said general elections in Nigeria are not seen to be credible because sitting president and governors conduct them.

Speaking as conference ambassador yesterday at the University of Calabar, during the premier edition of the Faculty of Arts International Conference, April 2016, the elder statesman advocated that sitting presidents and governors, who were seeking re-election, should resign before the conduct of the election.

Speaking on the theme ‘Globalisation and Democratic Values in Africa- Perspectives in Humanities’, Maitama Sule said Nigeria, and by extension most African states were still having problems with democratic governance because of the failure to incorporate  indigenous cultural backgrounds.

He said: “For true leaders to emerge in Nigeria and Africa, those seeking re-election, including the president and governors, must resign their positions and hand over to an interim administration that is non-partisan.”
The former UN permanent representative berated African leaders for attempting to entrench themselves in office through corruption and other negative tendencies.

He said: “When people are elected into office, they like to perpetuate their stay in office - this is wrong. When people get to power, they only try to enrich themselves - this is not democracy.

“There is no reason why our democracy in Nigeria and other parts of Africa should not be real democracy. Here in Nigeria, there is no reason why the different tribes should bring about disunity. All religions teach the same moral values.”

The elder statesman urged African leaders to embrace what he referred to as Africracy, which should evolve elements of local cultural backgrounds instead of the “wholesale western kind of democracy that is currently being practiced in the continent.”

“The democracy we are practising today in Nigeria and Africa is not Afro-centric; it is more of Euro-centric. The reason why we are having problem with our democracy is because we have not fashioned it in line with our cultural backgrounds. The democracy in France, Germany and the United States, are all different,” he added.

The event had in attendance a former Senate president, Ken Nnamani, ex-deputy Senate president, Ibrahim Mantu, a former governor of Anambra State, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, former governor of Akwa Ibom State, retired Air Commodore Idongesit Nkanga, among others.

2016 budget: Appropriation chairman, Jibrin, in N4.1Billion scandal.

2016 budget: Appropriation chairman, Jibrin, in N4.1Billion scandal.

Abdulmumin Jibrin

Embattled chairman Appropriation,  House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin,  is under fire for personally allocating over N4billion to himself in controversial 2016 budget.

Pointblanknews.com gathered that Jibrin’s, impunity and high handedness is not going down well with his colleagues.

Lawmakers in both chambers had used their whims to re allocate funds in the budget submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

But Jibrin s case stood out because of the amount he appropriated to himself.

As it stands,  his colleagues want him to step down,  while the Speaker who also benefited may have left Jibrin out to dry.

It was also  observed that one item was repeated by Jibrin with different figures under the Ministry of Water Resources, which is construction of Bebeji earth dam with N270m and N50m respectively.

Jibrin a crony of Speaker Dogara, is gradually getting in the bad books of the speaker despite the illegal allocation of  over N3billion to him for constituency projects.

Said a source in the Speaker’s office. ” The speaker feels uncomfortable despite what Jibrin allocated to him. The session was rowdy because members were so upset with Jibrin and Dogara.  How can you allocate over N4billion to yourself with questionable projects”

Pointblanknews.com also learnt that the Speaker may sacrifice Jibrin,  because even some principal officers are not happy with the scandal.

According to our findings , a cross section of members see the action of Jibrin as illegal and that it has brought public flak.

It was learnt that members queried why N3billion projects have been allocated to the Speaker and why Jibrin favoured his constituency with N4.169billion projects.

“The leadership said the N20b projects were captured under zonal intervention as it had been since 1999 but members said if others were doing it in the past, it should not be now.”

Some of the projects allocated to Jibrin’s Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency are:

•N100m for Town Hall

•Construction of roads in Kiru/Bebeji—N150m

•Solar street lights—N300m

•Badaf Road Construction—N405m

•Pedestrian Bridges —N200m

•Bebeji Earth Dam—N270m

•Empowerment items—N100m

•Entrepreneurship Development Training and Vocational Centre —N100m

•Rehabilitation of Gwarzo Kiru, Kwanar Maiyaki–N180m

•Rehabilitation of Sharada-Kwanar Dogara—N1.445billion

•Construction of solar powered boreholes–N150m

•Supply of tricycles, grinding machines and set of women salon empowerment kits—N200m

•Small irrigation scheme ins in Kiru—N100m

Findings revealed that at the end of the day, Speaker Dogara managed to douse the tension by begging members to sheathe their swords.

We perfected Ekiti rigging in hotel – Aluko

We perfected Ekiti rigging in hotel – Aluko

Tope Aluko

A former Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ekiti State, Dr. Tope Aluko, has said the plot to rig the June 21, 2014 governorship election was perfected inside a hotel barely a week before the poll.

He alleged that the hotel was owned by the Chief of Staff to Fayose, Chief Dipo Anisulowo, where sensitive materials like ballot papers and result sheets were delivered to PDP chieftains by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Besides, he claimed the Governor Ayodele Fayose’s administration had received the refund of the N5.2bn spent on Ado-Ifaki federal highway by former Kayode Fayemi’s administration.

The government has continued to deny receiving refund.

Speaking on a special interview programme on Adaba 88. 9 FM, Akure, on Wednesday evening, Aluko claimed that the electoral materials were delivered through Akure Airport.

He claimed that INEC ballot papers were thumb-printed and result sheets filled by PDP members which gave their party the edge long before the electorate went to the polls.

Aluko explained that operatives of the Department of State Services led by a female officer stormed Anisulowo’s hotel and arrested the PDP members perfecting the rigging but that they were released within three hours following the intervention of the Federal Government.

He disclosed that a lorry conveying part of the electoral materials delivered through the Akure Airport was the one intercepted by soldiers led by the recently retired Brig.-Gen. Aliyu Momoh.

According to him, the materials were later released after the officers received an “order from above.”

The former PDP scribe alleged that the N5.2bn refund had been diverted to the Ado Ekiti flyover project following investigation conducted by the Department of State Service, the Police and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Aluko said, “Ask him (Fayose) why did former Commissioner for Works, Kayode Oso run away? Commissioner for Finance Toyin Ojo told  his interrogators about the finances of the state including the N5.2bn refunded on the Ado-Ifaki Road project carried out by Fayemi.

“You will recall that Fayose had earlier denied receipt of the N5.2bn refund but the revelation by Ojo while in custody now made him (Fayose) to divert the money for flyover construction because Ojo told them that Oso was in a better position to explain on the refund collected on road.”
Aluko urged Nigerians to pray for him because of alleged plans to assassinate him.

Responding to questions, Aluko said the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi, was liable for prosecution for his alleged role in an attack on the Ekiti State High Court to prevent the delivery of a ruling on a perjury case involving Fayose.

Aluko said  “I pity Owoseni Ajayi who is saying that I should be prosecuted because he (Owoseni) was the one who placed a call to Fayose to organise the mob to disrupt the delivery of a ruling by Justice Olusegun Ogunyemi.
“Owoseni told Fayose on the telephone that should the judge deliver the ruling on the perjury case, it would go against him (Fayose) and his planned swearing-in would be in jeopardy.”

Aluko maintained that he never asked for forgiveness from Fayose as “erroneously” reported in the media but that the governor and former Ekiti Assembly factional Speaker Dele Olugbemi barged into a meeting he was holding with some PDP leaders.

“Olugbemi and Fayose barged into the meeting venue, Olugbemi is a pathological liar. Olugbemi had lied against Fayose, he lied against the APC, he lied against the PDP and he is working for the money and appointment he had just received from Fayose.

“I did not create a scene at the venue of the meeting because hefty men had been stationed around and my wife was afraid of what could happen. Fayose held my clothes that I should not talk when I wanted to say something.

“I feared for my wife who later disappeared from the scene and I did not know her whereabouts. They almost attacked me when I went to Channels Television  but it was policemen led by the CP that saved me after being held up there for about three hours.

“I played safe because of my wife and to avoid the scenario that played out when I went to Channels Television to grant my first interview.”
Aluko said his trouble with Fayose began when the governor derailed from the plan and blueprint for the development of Ekiti State and not because he was not made the Chief of Staff.

DPO WHO BEAT UP FEMALE TRAFFIC WARDEN IN OGUN DEMOTED, FILE TRANSFERRED TO ABUJA

O WHO BEAT UP FEMALE TRAFFIC WARDEN IN OGUN DEMOTED, FILE TRANSFERRED TO ABUJA

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ikenne Division of Ogun State, Mr. Patrick Onwu, has been demoted by the Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase for misconduct.

It would be recalled that Mr. Onwu on Monday allegedly beat up a female traffic warden, Inspector Anifat Bello, while she was discharging her duty at NNPC junction, on IBB Boulevard in Ogun state.

The traffic officer reportedly stopped the private vehicle of the DPO, unbeknownst to her that the occupant was a senior officer, which resulted in Mr. Onwu giving her the beating of her life for her effrontery.
Bello, who has once been recommended for national honours by former President Olusegun Obasanjo for her dedication to duty, reported the matter at the state police command headquarters.

It was learnt that Mr. Arase got wind of the incident through news reports and called the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abdulmajid Ali.
Following the confirmation of the incident by CP Ali, the IGP ordered that Onwu be demoted to a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) from Superintendent of Police (SP).

The police IG also ordered that the DPO’s file be transferred to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, so further disciplinary actions can be taken.
