The purchased vehicles is a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV V6 2016 model and valued at N17m each in showrooms across the country.
The delivery of the first set of cars, which was said to have been delivered to one senator from the 36 states of the country, came after members of standing committees could no longer perform their statutory functions as a result of paucity of funds.

Speaking with the medium, spokesperson of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, said the cars were a necessity, and not luxury.

In his words, “Let us face the reality, if Special Advisers can use cars like this as official cars, then why the noise about ours? A senator is representing a constituency, a district.  Do you expect him to be trekking to discharge his duties? These cars are not a luxury, the cars are a practical and absolute necessity.”

We Don't Need IMF Loans - FG Insists

We Don't Need IMF Loans - FG Insists

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun

Following IMF's offer to help Nigeria with loans, Nigeria's Minister of Finance has insisted that loans from the international finance institution was unnecessary as the country is already sorting out it's financial situation.

While speaking at the ongoing Spring Meetings of the IMF-World Bank in Washington DC, United States of America, the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, stated that the Federal Government has said the economic challenges currently facing the country are surmountable without it having to take any loan from the International Monetary Fund, Punch reports.

A statement from her Media Adviser, Festus Akanbi, said the minister stated this while responding to questions about why the government had refused to apply for IMF loans.

The minister said Nigeria was adapting to its new realities by implementing fiscal policies to steer the country back on track for stable growth with a diversified economy.

She noted that these policies and investment would enable Nigeria to show positive growth by 2017.

She said, “Nigeria is not sick and even if we are, we have our own local remedy. The real vulnerability in the Nigerian economy is overdependence on a single source of revenue — oil.

“We have resolved to build resilience into the country’s economy to hedge against future oil shocks. This is because dependence on oil brings about vulnerability and laziness.

“So we are doing a combination of things to diversify our economy, with revenue mobilisation to enable sufficient investment in developing the non-oil sectors.

“We have great opportunities to reset the Nigerian economy and ensure that as we go forward, growth will be in a sustainable manner so that we won’t be vulnerable to oil price fluctuations.”

With a truly diversified economy, the minister said, the government would have created opportunities for wealth creation for the people.

“The compelling business case in Nigeria is that the fundamentals remain very strong a teeming young, growing population, rich in resources and with a government determined to finally get it right.

“The great thing is that long-term investors recognise this and understand the difference between short-term and long-term issues"

Cut Off Genitals of Rapists and Sexual Offenders - Ita-Giwa

Cut Off Genitals of Rapists and Sexual Offenders - Ita-Giwa

Senator Florence Ita-Giwa

A former Senator and ex-aide to Goodluck Jonathan has suggested a more sringent method to curb the activities of rapists in Nigeria.

The best way to end rape and sexual assault in the country is by ensuring convicted rapists get capital punishment which does not entail killing them but cutting off their genitals.  This is the suggestion of Senator Florence Ita-Giwa.

Ita-Giwa gave this suggestion while speaking as  a special guest at ‘Magnenta and Black Art & Fashion for Charity’, a fund raising exhibition for Mirabel Centre, held at the British Council, Lagos by a group under the aegis of Friends of Mirabel.

The women leader who represented Cross River in the Senate and later served as Special Adviser on  National Assembly Matters to former President Goodluck Jonathan,  maintained that throwing child- rapists into prison is not enough justice but cutting off their genitals will ensure they do not use them on other children. Making reference to accounts of rape by two survivors at the event, the senator said:

“The lady said she was happy that she got justice for her  four-year-old daughter who was raped by two men but, in my mind, if I were a judge and a man is brought to court for raping a child, he will receive capital punishment. But I will say, `don’t kill him, rather let him live his life in pain, let his organ be cut off’. He should not be allowed the pleasure of using that organ anymore. If the organ is not cut off, at the end of his term in prison, he will use it on other children. Fortunately for them, I’m no longer in the Senate  but I will find a way to get it into the chamber. This is the proper way to end the evil of rape in the society”.

While commending Mirabel Centre for its commitment towards rehabilitating survivors of sexual assault and rape, she  pledged  support to  the Centre and called on all to join in the fight against rape and sexual assault.

Also speaking, the Managing Partner at Partnership for Justice and Founder Mirabel Centre, Mrs Itoro Eze-Anaba, said that the situation had  reached a stage  that girls are no longer safe in their homes since fathers and uncles rape them.

“Rape is not a girls’ or women’s issue, it is a community issue because boys are also being raped daily. The implication is that if we do not end it, the abused may end up as an abuser and a time will come when the society will be filled with abusers,” Eze-Anaba said.

She called on public spirited individuals and organizations to support Mirabel Centre to continue with the good work of protecting children.

Shocking! Lightning Kills 2 Women During Prayer Session in Church (Photo)

One of the women killed by the lightning

A mysterious lightning has killed two women in Imo State during a prayer session in a church leaving others seriously injured.

Tragedy struck in Imo State as 25-year-old Chioma Jonathan, a native of Obiangwu in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area and Chinonye Anyanwu, aged 26, from Ahiazu Mbaise LGA, both in Imo State, died when they were struck by lightning.

According to Daily Sun, the unfortunate incident happened when the two women went to participate in the regular Holy Ghost Hour prayer session of Heavenly Sure Charismatic Church, a Pentecostal church, usually held in the premises of Comprehensive Secondary School, Emekuku in Owerri North LGA, Imo State.

It was also gathered that the 54-year-old General Overseer of the church, Pastor Luke Nwokocha, who led the short-lived prayer session was slightly affected as he temporarily lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital by his wife and another member of the church, where he was revived. In addition, he sustained injuries on his leg.

Recounting the story, Pastor “We always have fellowship every Tuesday. On the fateful day, we had our ‘Holy Ghost Hour’. We were five members in the church. The two deceased sisters, including the sister that swept the church premises; Evangelist Solomon and myself were arranging the benches. Around 4.30pm heavy rain started falling. I started praying for the programme.”

"Then there was a sudden lightning flash followed by the deafening sound of thunder. The two women, who were in the direct path of the electric field created by the lightning flash died instantly, when they were struck by the streak. Nwokocha, who apparently was off the direct path of the streak received a much lower jolt of electricity, which, however, was strong enough to throw him across the room, cause temporary loss of consciousness and physical injuries on his leg and hands.

“My wife, Pastor Eucharia Nwokocha and the other church member rushed me to the hospital for medical treatment,” he said.

“I have been in this ministry for 26 years. I have never experienced anything like this. I was called into ministry in 1990. Until that time, I was a policeman and served in the Imo State Police Command and retired at Akwa Ibom Police Command in July 2007. Following my retirement, I decided to focus on my ministry fulltime. I do not understand how it happened, its only God who understands and knows all.”

Following the incident, the elder brother of Chioma Jonathan reported the case to the Owerri North Divisional Police Station, from where the case was transferred to the homicide department at the headquarters of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri, the state capital.

The Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu who confirmed the incident said it was a strange occurrence. He added that the cleric was undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department while the corpses of the dead women had been deposited at the mortuary of the Holy Rosary Hospital, Emekuku.

One of the elders of Emekuku community, Godwin John revealed that the whole thing was a mystery.

“We know Pastor Luke usually holds the ‘Holy Ghost Hour’ prayer session. What happened to Pastor Luke Nwokocha and the lightning strike that killed two members of his church is an abomination. We will consult the elders,” he said.

Meanwhile Lakanu has reassured relations of the deceased women that proper investigation would be carried out by the officer in charge of the homicide section of State Criminal Investigation Department, Supol Innocent Obi, who is working hard with the detectives under him to ensure that there is no miscarriage of justice.

EFCC Arrests Rivers State INEC Chief and Others for Collecting N675m in Bribe

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested the Independent National Electoral Commission officials in Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Delta states after it discovered  over N675.1m in their bank accounts.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has made a shocking discovery after unearthing massive collection of bribe by INEC officials totaling millions of naira.

According to the anti-graft agency, the money was received and shared by the officials during the last governorship elections.

According to Punch, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the 2015 election in Rivers State, Mrs. Gesila Khan, and other officials of INEC are already in EFCC custody. Khan was quizzed by the Department of State Services in July last year but was never charged.

Khan and four others were arrested on Thursday, by the zonal office of the EFCC in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital. The residences of all the suspects were subsequently searched and incriminating documents were said to have been recovered by the commission.

According to impeccable sources at the EFCC, Khan, who is now the REC in Cross River State, allegedly received N185.8m ahead of the March 28 and April 11, 2015 election.

A source at the EFCC, who did not want his name in print, said Khan had made confessional statements and was cooperating with the commission.
The source revealed that Khan received money through a special bank account and the commission had received overwhelming evidence.

He said, “Khan was the REC in Rivers State in 2015 election before she was transferred to Cross River early this year. She was said to have received N185.8m. She has made confessional statements.”

The anti-graft agency also arrested one Edem Okon Essanga, who is a retired INEC official. Essanga was arrested alongside his alleged accomplice, Immaculata Asuquo, who is the Head, Voter Education, INEC, Akwa Ibom State.

The source also disclosed that the EFCC had arrested one Fidelia Omoile who was the INEC electoral officer in Isoko-South Local Government Area, Delta State.

Apart from tracing over N112m to her, the commission also recovered some sensitive electoral materials during a search of her apartments in Edo and Delta states.

“She received N112.4m during the 2015 general election. A search warrant was executed at her residences in Asaba and Benin. Sensitive materials used in the 2015 elections were recovered, including evidence of the suspicious bank transaction and land documents that will assist us in our investigations,” the source said.

The commission also arrested one Oluchi Obi Brown who was the INEC administrative secretary in Delta State. She allegedly received over N111m.

Further investigations by detectives revealed that Brown had about $75,000 in an account in the United States.

“Oluchi received N111.5m during the general election. Investigations showed that she operates a foreign account with the Bank of America. As of February this year, the account balance was $75,857, (N24, 274,240),” the source added.

Losing Senate Presidency seat may be APC’s sacrifice for Change

Losing Senate Presidency seat may be APC’s sacrifice for Change

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun

National Chairman of the All Progressives
Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun says the party is “also planning” to checkmate plans by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to take over the Senate Presidency should Bukola Saraki be removed from the position in view of his current trial at the Code of
Conduct Tribunal, CCT.
He, however, pointed out that in an event his party forfeits the exalted position to the PDP, that may be the sacrifice it would have to pay for Change.

Speaking in an interview with Premium Times, Oyegun said: “We don’t take anything for granted. As they (PDP) are planning, we are also planning. The situation is under control. The whole situation is unfortunate but it is real.”

“Well, I don’t think we will lose that position. But sometimes, for change to take place, there is price you have to pay. So losing the position may be sacrifice for change.”

While ruling out the use of political solution to address Saraki’s prosecution over false assets declaration charges, he asked, “What political situation in a legal matter? Are the judges politicians?” adding that “ThePresident is certainly not the type who will interfere in a judicial matter. I
think we know him well. Everybody must know him. Things must be
done normally. And that is part of the change mantra that we must
play by the rule so that we don’t truncate processes.”

The APC boss continued: “People don’t seem to internalize what change is. If the President says “court, free
that man”, the same president can say ‘court, imprison that man.’
Is that the Nigeria you want? No! Change means allowing the law to take the proper course. I can tell you the President won’t interfere. The President is straight definite, straight and firm in all facets.”
