Economy: Buhari is on the Right Path - Aliko Dangote

Aliko Dangote

Dangote has taken a different stand on the current economic policies of President Muhammadu Buhari which has attracted intense criticisms from the Nigerian masses.

President and Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote said yesterday that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration was on the right path in the diversification of the nation’s economy, according to the Nation.

His assertion followed new policies implemented through the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment as well as Ministry for Solid Mineral Development.

Dangote spoke at the ground-breaking ceremony of Okpella cement financed by his group. He hailed efforts of the President in revitalising the solid mineral sector, noting that the sector could provide employment and improve non-oil revenue.

Dangote noted that the new plant could transform the economy of Okpella and Edo State. Dangote said investment in local cement plants saved Nigeria $3 billion spent on importing cement.

He urged the private sector to invest in critical areas of the economy since the Federal Government has expressed readiness to resuscitate the industrial sector.

Dangote said he would always invest in Nigeria, adding that Nigeria remains the best place to invest in the world.

He said: “While others are sitting and waiting, the Dangote Group is thinking ahead by investing in additional cement capacities in Okpella in Edo State and Itori in Ogun State. We have also invested in a 100MW Power Generation Plant for Itori and Okpella.

“A key factor that drives investments in an economy is the presence of an investor-friendly business climate. Indeed, Edo State is one of the most attractive investment destinations in Nigeria.

“The economic reforms in Edo State, especially in tax, innovations in rural finance and investment on infrastructure, have produced an enabling environment that has further provided a platform for future growth. These factors encouraged us to consider Edo State as the right destination for this investment.

Jonathan's Administration is Responsible for Current Economic Hardship - Sanusi

Malam Muhammad Sanusi II

Sanusi has blamed the current economic hardship faced by Nigerians on the effects of misrule of the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

The Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi II, has blamed the previous administration led by Goodluck Jonathan for the lingering economic hardship in Nigeria.

Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), attributed the current hardship to the way and manner the previous administration handled the affairs of the nation.

He stated this when Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, visited him on Saturday during a working visit to Kano State.

Speaking on the economic hardship, Sanusi, however, called on the government to find lasting solution to the hardship. The emir, according to PM News, also advised government to step up effort in enlightening Nigerians on the nation’s economic situation.

He said the emirate council would do same and pleaded with Nigerians to bear with the situation, promising that the hardship would soon be overcome. Also speaking, Osinbajo stressed that the Buhari-led administration was committed to transforming the living standard of Nigerians.

According to him, the federal government was doing everything possible to overcome the challenge soon.

He told the emir that he was in the state to sympathise with the state government, Emirate council and the entire people of the state on the recent fire outbreak at the Abubakar Rimi Market.

“We also came to inspect some of the developmental projects executed by the leadership of Governor Abdullahi Ganduje,” Osinbajo said.

Presidency Misleading Nigerians on 2016 Budget - Read National Assembly's Side of the Story

Abdulmumin Jibrin

Chairman of the federal house of representatives committee on appropriation has said the presidency is not telling Nigerians the truth about items on the 2016 budget.

Over the weekend, there was a firestorm online and all over social media over an alleged re-allocation of funds for Lagos-Calabar rail project to Lagos-Kano rail project.

Chairman of the federal house of representatives committee on appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has said that the presidency is not telling Nigerians the truth about items on the 2016 budget.

In a series of messages on his Twitter page on Sunday, Jibrin said that the executive did not make any provision for the Lagos-Calabar rail project in the budget proposal it presented to the national assembly.

He said;

"I actually find it shocking that even some national dailies made the removal their headlines. A little research would would have helped. Lagos-Calabar Railway line was never captured in the budget that was sent by the executive. How then could it have been removed by NASS?

"All they, and those spreading the false information needed to have done, is check the initial document sent by the executive. Lagos-Calabar Rail was never included. How could NASS have removed what was not there? But the nation is being misled.

"The NASS has always been on the receiving end of bad press. This is being capitalised on in the conversations on budget 2016. This is unfortunate as it is quite clear to all and sundry that budget 2016 and all its headaches and controversies didn’t emanate from NASS

"Take the budget of the ministry of transportation [that] was overshot by N54bn. That is, by the time you add up the items on the ministry’s budget. You’d still have a gap of N54bn. N54billion lying there without being allocated. NASS has a responsibility and here it did the right thing

"What NASS did with the N54bn; we added N39.7bn to the Lagos-Kano Rail project. This will help complete the project once and for all.

"We also allocated N10b of this sum to the airport’s navigation and security apparatus. We often make so much noise about airport security after major plane crashes. But we need not wait for crashes to enhance safety at airports

"We allocated the balance to Baro Ports for its completion and equipping. Baro Port is strategic to our economic development.

"Much ado about vaccines that weren’t even there. The budget of the ministry of health was the most controversial. The minister of health came to deny the document that was presented to the NASS by the executive for the second time. There is a lot more to be said about this and they will be said in the coming days.

"I saw reports saying NASS allocated too much for rural projects including rural roads, primary health care, empowerment programmes. We also allocated funding for rural solar street lights, vocational centres, cottage industries etc. On this one, there is no going back.

"Nigeria isn’t just for urban dwellers & as representatives of the people, ours is to ensure justice in the distribution of national wealth. About 95% of the input of NASS, which would have given life to the policy thrust of Mr President, were discarded by the executive.

"Some of these inputs include special intervention for the solid mineral sector. This is even imperative seeing the realities around oil. Some of our other inputs include special intervention for rural agriculture, payment of pension arrears. Rural community light project. The rural community Light project to light up 100 communities spread across the 774 local governments.

"We also had special programmes for women empowerment and the payment of debt owed local contractors. We also suggested N100bn be taken out of N500bn, set aside as special intervention fund.

"That N50billion be set aside as special bursary for students of tertiary institutions and another N50bn for special training on entrepreneurship for students of tertiary institutions pre-graduation. These were our inputs.

"These are my preliminary submissions seeing as there have been no official communication between the executive and the national assembly.

"These points are being noted because of the reports in some of today’s papers, who really would have done better with a little more research. Not to mention the fact that the executive has not come out to disown the false reports flying around.

"We will come up with a comprehensive position especially with respect to our observation of the budget and what we did to make it better.

"The crux of the matter as it is, is that while the NASS believes in the bottom-up agenda for development – focus on rural areas and communities, the executive seems to favour a top-down approach. But this is not enough reason to mislead Nigerians on the role of NASS on the budget.

"It is important to have a fact based conversation on these issues instead of the obvious attempts by some to mislead the general public."

CBN Averts Closure of 200 Manufacturing Firms Through Forex Access

CBN Averts Closure of 200 Manufacturing Firms Through Forex Access

Godwin Emefiele

The apex bank has rescued hundreds of manufacturing companies in Nigeria by making available foreign exchange for the purchase of imported raw materials for production.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has averted the closure of over 200 companies in the manufacturing sector of the economy through its recent allocation of foreign exchange to the affected industries to bring in their raw materials, according to the Vanguard.

Recall that the apex bank had in a bid to stabilise the exchange rate, in protection of foreign reserves, following oil price decline, excluded 41 products from access to the foreign exchange market (interbank foreign exchange market and Bureau de Change).

This led to inability of some manufactures to sustain production due to lack of Forex to import raw materials. Consequently, Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN, cried out three months ago that if the dollar scarcity persists, an estimated 200 of its members out of the 1,600 surviving companies would close down their operations by the end of the first quarter of 2016.

With the first quarter over, Dr. Frank Jacobs, MAN President, said: “The good news is that CBN has started allocating forex to manufacturers. Thought, it is not exactly what we want but it is better than none. Some weeks ago, we had challenge in getting some forex, so I had a meeting with the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

“At the meeting, he promised that he was going to make sure that manufacturers' requirements are met although he said he cannot guarantee their requirements will be met 100 per cent. After the meeting with the CBN Governor, I met with MAN members and conveyed the message that their requests are being attended to and they are happy that although that is not exactly what they want but that they are happy that something is happening. I am very happy about where we are today and we hope the CBN will sustain that effort,” he said.

According to him, it was the outcome of their public outcry that led the CBN Governor to have a meeting with “’Me. When he saw the reports, we discussed at length and he promised that he would ensure that manufacturers’ requirements are met.”

Fielding question on the way forward, he noted: “Yes, the way forward is we are happy at present our requirements are being met, and our prayer is that it should be sustained so that we can together grow the economy.

He stressed that although, the current allocation of forex to manufacturers is not able to satisfy their demand 100 per cent, but at least it is better than nothing.

“We are happy that at least CBN is sensitive to our needs now even though they are not able to give us 100 per cent access pending the time when the forex improves, and when the price of oil goes up and foreign reserve improves.

Like Oliver Twist, in order to satisfy our raw materials requirement, actually, we want hundred per cent of the requirements because when you apply for $100,000 but you were given $50,000 dollars, it means that your production is going to be cut into half and cutting your production into half would mean that you won’t be able to work the numbers of hours you are supposed to work in a day. That is why we are hoping that with time they should be able to give us everything we want. So we are happy that something is coming that when nothing was coming at all.

He disclosed that in order to cut down on dependence on imported raw materials for production, MAN is in discussion with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council, RMRDC.

El-rufai's Religious Bill in Kaduna is 'Absolutely Wrong' - Senator Shehu Sani

El-rufai's Religious Bill in Kaduna is 'Absolutely Wrong' - Senator Shehu Sani

Nasir El-Rufai and Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani who has been portrayed as the political arch-rival of El-Rufai has criticised his controversial religious bill enacted by the governor over its contradiction with the provisions of the Nigerian constitution.

The Senator representing Kaduna Central, Shehu Sani, on Sunday criticised the religious bill by the Kaduna State government, saying it was “absolutely wrong", according to Premium Times.

The bill, according to the state governor, Nasir El-Rufai, is to regulate public preaching in the state and to ensure violent religious sects are not allowed to thrive. Mr. Sani, who has been at loggerheads with the governor over other programmes, however, said the government had no right to regulate or issue licenses to religious preachers in the state.

The lawmaker spoke shortly after receiving an award of excellence by the youth wing of Ansarul-Deen Society of Nigeria during their 40 years anniversary and fundraising programme.

He said it was painful for him to receive a merit award from the group when majority of Nigerians were suffering.

“It’s painful to receive this merit award when majority of Nigerians are still expecting good governance. Nigerians are facing lots of challenges and we the elected leaders cannot continue to give them excuses.

“They did not elect us to lament, they didn’t elect us to give them excuses. We were elected to give them good governance. I’m not the kind of person that will see black and say it’s white. Whether we are in same party or not I will not see wrong and say it’s right.

“I did that during the military era and I will continue to tell the truth even now. Nigerians spent hours under sun to vote for us and so we must not fail them. We must do what the people want and not what we want as leaders because they voted for us.

“This is why we say the proposed religious bill in Kaduna State is absolutely wrong and we will not accept anybody to licence any preacher because people have the right to practice their religion as enshrined in the constitution.

“Nobody can violate the constitution because freedom of religion is enshrined in the constitution. We are also calling on the state governor not to over tax the people because they have suffered a lot under the 16 years of PDP,” he said.

The Senator also urged Nigerians to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to succeed, saying the president has succeeded in tackling the insurgents in North East.

“President Muhammadu Buhari is really working for Nigeria and for the masses of this country. Therefore, we must continue to pray for him to succeed,” he said.

Mr. Sani later announced the donation of N2 million for the completion for the Ansarul-Deen Youth Centre.

Framed, Shamed and Damned - Top Entertainer's Life Ruined After False HIV Rumour (Photo)

Framed, Shamed and Damned - Top Entertainer's Life Ruined After False HIV Rumour (Photo)

Tafadzwa Mushunje and boyfriend Colin Kanonge

A very popular entertainer has seen her career crash and thrown to prison cell after she was accused of injecting infected blood to a little child's body.

A top Harare model Tafadzwa Mushunje says her life is in ruins after a false HIV allegations.

The model who was making a huge impact on the entertainment industry in Zimbabwe was literally kicked off the top with the HIV rumour that has now ruined her career.

According to the Chronicle, before the tragic episode, Mushunje had started to make a huge impact on the local showbiz scene. From hosting events, becoming faces of corporates to even presenting a show on national television, the twins were making their mark.

But after news broke of Mushunje’s arrest, her world started crumbling and some corporates no longer wanted to be associated with their names.

Although she is now free, Tafadzwa says she is now living in isolation.

“Right now I do not feel confident to do everyday stuff, like going to the marketplace, shopping, church orsimply catching public transport because a lot of people never got to learn about the acquittal.”said the model

“A lot of people are still saying there’s no smoke without fire, suggesting that I must have done something of that sort to deserve what I went through.

“But what happened to me could have happened to anyone, any kind of citizen, bad or good citizen for that matter.
”Mushunje says even her identical twin, Takudzwa, has borne the brunt of the negative publicity that followed her arrest.
“I will not mention the names but yes, there are certain corporates who dropped me a few days after this ordeal,” said the model.

It was the most heinous crime a 24-year-old girl could be accused of: using a syringe to draw her own HIV infected blood and injecting a two-year-old boy, the son of her new boyfriend with another woman.

In an instant, Harare model Tafadzwa Mushunje’s life was turned upside down after she was arrested and charged with deliberately transmitting HIV to the toddler and assault for allegedly making the boy drink her urine.

Her face was plastered on the front pages of newspapers and sent around the world on the internet.

Except it was all not true! Yesterday, Mushunje left the Harare Magistrates Court a free woman after the Prosecutor General’s Office withdrew charges following the release of medical tests showing that neither she nor the child was HIV positive.

Mushunje was arrested after the boy’s mother, Sihle Tracy Harry, went to the police claiming that she had left the tot with its father, Colin Kanonge, who was in the company of Mushunje. The boy had been returned to her with “strange marks”.

She told investigators that she had received information from a friend, pointing her to a link on a notorious and highly defamatory sex and sleaze website called Musvo Zimbabwe, which claimed that “Mushunje assaulted the child whenever his father left the minor with her.”

The website added: “When the father was away, Mushunje drew HIV infected blood and injected the child… She beats the child saying return to your mother and makes him drink her urine.”

It was after reading these claims, said prosecutors, that Harry — who describes herself on the internet as “a Nyasarand (someone originally from Malawi) and not a mukharadi (mixed race)” — linked the report to the marks on the child.

Astonishingly, police went on to arrest Mushunje even before they could establish if indeed she was HIV positive, and that she had indeed infected the child with the virus that causes AIDS.

No other evidence, including the syringe allegedly used, or injection marks on the child, was produced for prosecutors before charges were filed.

The Prosecutor General’s Office could still have declined to lay charges, but the case went to court where it collapsed spectacularly yesterday with Mushunje being left to pick up the pieces — her name and reputation well and truly in the dump.

Top Harare lawyer Jonathan Samkange last night told The Chronicle that Mushunje was entitled to sue the girl’s mother for malicious prosecution to repair her reputation. “She has a right to sue for damages that will compensate her for the mental torture she went through before she was acquitted,” Samkange said.

“Stories which have been generated about her must have forced her colleagues, family, friends and relatives to look at her with horror thus she is entitled to psychological and psychiatric treatment fees.”

Samkange said the case was not a prima facie — accepted as guilty until proved otherwise — and Mushunje could now sue whoever initiated the prosecution.

“Somehow, the police and the prosecutor can’t be sued as they’re not experts or judges to have stopped the matter from going into court,” the lawyer added.

Buhari Leaves Alleged Corrupt Ex-Police IG, Mike Okiro to Recruit 10,000 Police Officers

Buhari Leaves Alleged Corrupt Ex-Police IG, Mike Okiro to Recruit 10,000 Police Officers

Former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro

President Muhammadu Buhari has been accused of leaving the current recruitment process of 10,000 police officers in the hands of questionable officials.

Two top police officers in Abuja have told SaharaReporters of widespread disenchantment within police ranks that President Muhammadu Buhari had not removed former Inspector-General of Police Mike Okiro from his post as chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Also, It was learned that several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have voiced their disquiet over Mr. Okiro’s continued leadership of the PSC despite credible and well-documented details about his corrupt lifestyle.

A source told SaharaReporters that Mr. Okiro’s tenure at the helm of the PSC has had negative consequences on the professionalization of the police, adding that Mr. Okiro was well known for his corrupt practices and notorious for favoring some of the most criminal elements within the police force.

The other source remarked that it would be unfortunate if President Buhari allowed Mr. Okiro to oversee the hiring of 10,000 new police officers. “This man [Okiro] was not a good influence when he was the IG, and he has not been a good influence as chairman of the Police Service Commission,” said one of the high-ranking police sources.

He added: “To allow him to be in charge of new recruitment of thousands of new officers means that the culture of corruption and even criminality in the force is being fostered.”

The controversial online news platform has detailed how Mr. Okiro shielded a murderous police officer, Vincent Orubebe, even after internal police investigations found that the officer had killed innocent people and released criminals from detention in exchange for cash. Mr. Orubebe, who was in charge of a special anti-robbery squad in Lagos, was suspended from the police and was close to being formally sacked before Mr. Okiro became IG and recalled him.

Also, Mr. Okiro approved the reinstatement and promotion of another notorious police officer, Sam Chukwu, who has been implicated as the sponsor of a gang of junior police officers whose armed robbery and kidnapping activities once terrorized the resident of Enugu, the capital of Enugu State. Even though Mr. Chukwu has defied summons to appear in court over the kidnapping and murder of Lotachukwu Ezeudu in September 2009, Mr. Okiro engineered the fugitive officer’s promotion to the rank of assistant commissioner of police and his deployment to police headquarters annex in Lagos.

Police sources accused Mr. Okiro of promoting and protecting criminal-minded officers because they funnel cash to him. “The simple truth is that this man [Mr. Okiro] has instituted a system whereby he receives bribes to push the promotion of senior officers. Unless Mr. President acts fast, Sir Okiro is going to destroy what remains of the integrity of the force if he is in charge of the recruitment and promotion of 10,000 new policemen for Nigeria. He will just populate the force with people who share his corrupt views,” said one of the senior police sources.

A senior officer, Solomon Kaase, had petitioned the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) accusing Mr. Okiro of planning to steal N275 million from the PSC. In its investigation, the ICPC found that former IG Okiro requested for and collected N350 million ostensibly to train 900 staff of the PSC, even though the commission had only a workforce of 391 at the time.

ICPC investigators further concluded that Mr. Okiro trained PSC staff at a training location in Abuja and pocketed funds meant for training in Lagos and other parts of the country.

It was also reported how Mr. Okiro used a firm registered by his now late wife to defraud a bank. In 2009, the Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) indicted Mr. Okiro and his wife, Hera Okiro, for engaging in activities that led to huge losses for creditor banks. Mr. Okiro apparently used his official residence to operate a company that received government contracts while he was in active service as Inspector General of Police, a conduct that meant that the former IG violated public service laws. The said company was also used to obtain loans from Nigerian banks that were never paid back.

As the NDIC moved to recover the bad loans, Mrs. Okiro died in a freak accident after reportedly falling in her bathroom. Mr. Okiro kept her death secret from the public for a while, fueling suspicion that her death may not have been accidental.

Popular Lagos Lawyer, Falana Threatens to Sue FG Over Plans to Borrow $2bn from China

Popular Lagos Lawyer, Falana Threatens to Sue FG Over Plans to Borrow $2bn from China

Femi Falana

The decision of the Federal Government to borrow certain sums from China has not gone down well with the outspoken Lawyer, Femi Falana.

Femi Falana (SAN), a Lagos-based lawyer and human rights activist, has advised the Federal Government to put on hold its plan to obtain $2bn loan from China.

Falana opined that instead of “plunging the nation into more indebtedness” the Federal Government should double up its efforts to recover some funds amounting to about $200bn which were either not remitted to the Federation Account or stolen from the nation’s treasury.

Falana gave these charges in a letter dated April 8, 2016, addressed to the Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun.

He said, “In the light of the foregoing, we are compelled to call on the Federal Government to muster the political will and courage to recover the aforesaid withheld or stolen wealth of not less than $200bn belonging to the Nigerian people.

“However, if you refuse to accede to our request we shall have no alternative than to initiate legal proceedings at the Federal High Court with a view to restraining the Federal Government from further plunging the nation into external indebtedness.”

In the letter entitled, ‘Request for the collection of outstanding revenue of $200bn withheld from the Federation Account or stolen by looters’, Falana threatened to sue the Federal Government if his request was taken for granted.

He said, “In particular, we requested the Federal Government to embark on the recovery of the revenue of $42bn withheld from the Federation Account from 1999 to 2012 by some transnational oil companies, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and other agencies of the Federal Government.
“In your reply dated March 17, 2016 you assured us that the issues raised in our letter were receiving the attention of the Federal Government.

“We were therefore surprised to learn that the Administration had applied to the Chinese Government for another loan of $2bn.

“In urging the Federal Government to desist from taking the loan of $2bn from China or any other country we are compelled to advise the Federal Government to intensify efforts to recover the nation’s wealth which has been criminally diverted by a handful of local and foreign looters.”
