Abia: Ikpeazu raises 50 grounds of appeal

Abia: Ikpeazu raises 50 grounds of appeal

 Okezie Ikpeazu

•I’m not desperate, says Ogah

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has raised 50 grounds on which he is seeking the Court of Appeal’s reversal of his removal from office for tax certificate discrepancies.

Justice Okon Abang on June 27, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately issue a Certificate of Return to Dr. Uche Ogah, who polled the second highest number of votes in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary election.

In his July 4 notice of appeal, Dr. Ikpeazu, through his counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), raised 50 grounds of appeal and expressed dissatisfaction with the decision of the lower court.

The respondents are: Dr. Sampson Uchechukwu Ogah(1st); Peoples Democratic Party( 2nd); the Independent National Electoral Commission (3th); and Mr.  Friday Nwanozie Nwosu (4th)..

His first ground of appeal is that the trial judge erred in law and came to a wrong decision in holding that the appellant was ineligible to participate in the primary election of the 2nd respondent by reason of presenting false information to the 3rd respondent in INEC Form CF001 and consequently granting all the reliefs claimed by the 1st respondent in his originating summons.

According to the second ground of appeal, the lower court equally erred in law and reached a perverse decision when after finding thus:  “The cause of action arose in this matter when the 1st and 2nd defendants forwarded Form CF001 containing alleged false information to the Independent National Electoral Commission”. It went ahead to disqualify the appellant from being a candidate at the 2nd respondent’s primary election and declared the 1st respondent as the winner of the primary election.

On his third ground of appeal, Dr. Ikpeazu noted that the lower court erred in law and acted without jurisdiction when it purported to enforce/apply the provisions of the PDP Electoral Guidelines for primary elections 32014 in determining the originating summons before it without the PDP Guidelines being put in evidence before it.

In his fourth ground of appeal, Ikepazu pointed out that the lower court also erred in law and reached a perverse decision when it held in respect of the Supreme Court decision in Ekagbara v, Ikpeazu (2016) 4 NWLR (pt. 1503) 541 thus: “In fact in the above cited case, Supreme Court in a way departed from its earlier decision in Kharki v. PDP… Supreme Court also held that this court has jurisdiction to entertain a suit questioning the qualification of an aspirant in a primary election by a fellow aspirant when the aspirant whose qualification is being questioned did not pay tax as at when due or where there are lapses in the tax paper of such aspirant… In Ekagbara v. Ikpeazu (supra), the Supreme Court also held that it does not really matter that this will involve the examination of tax administration in Abia State of Nigeria.”

In his fifth ground of appeal, the appellant observed that trial judge erred in law and came to a perverse decision when he asked thus: “It is either that the information are false or correct, I do not think it is a case of forgery.

I do not think facts are in dispute. Even if the affidavits of the parties are in dispute, they are not in my view in dispute on material facts… It is for the 1st to 2nd defendants to show that the information contained in documents attached to Form CF001 submitted to Independent National Electoral Commission are not false … I think the court can conveniently use the affidavit evidence placed before it to resolve issues in controversy. This suit was properly commenced by an originating summon”.

In the seventeenth ground of appeal, Ikpeazu observed that the lower court misdirected itself and reached a perverse decision when it held that the appellant presented false information to INEC by reason of the alleged differences between the tax receipts and the tax certificate with respect to the tax return 2013.

According to the last ground of appeal, Ikpeazu stressed that the decision of the lower court was/is against the weight of evidence, and therefore sought the following relief from the Court of Appeal, the first being, an order allowing this appeal.

The second, an order setting aside all the main and consequential orders made and granted by the lower court and the last, an order dismissing or striking out the amended originating summons in suit no. FHC/ABJ/CS/71/2016.

Panic as Arms Panel Prepares to Submit Report; Dambazau, Ihejirika, Minimah Indicted

Panic as Arms Panel Prepares to Submit Report; Dambazau, Ihejirika, Minimah Indicted

Former Nigeria's military chiefs

According to an exclusive report on Premium Times, there is tension and frantic scheming among former army chiefs and other top officers of the Nigerian Army as the Presidential Committee on Defence Equipment Procurement in the Nigerian Armed Forces concludes its task and is set submit its report of President Muhammadu Buhari in the coming days.

A reliable source close to the committee, which was set up by Buhari to probe the procurement of arms, ammunition and equipment in the military from 2007 to 2015, told the publication that several top retired army officers were indicted and some were already scheming to suppress the content of the report.

A source, who described the report as “damning” and “explosive”, said retired top army officers indicted include present minister of interior, Abdurrahman Bello Dambazau, the immediate past chief of army staff, Kenneth Minimah, and his predecessor, Azubuike Ihejirika.

Dambazau was particularly mentioned as trying to suppress the content of the report. He was appointed the chief of army staff by late President Umaru Yar’Adua, and served between 2008 and 2010. “The committee members are putting things together and will present its findings to the president in the next week or so,” the source said.

The source explained that the committee uncovered a whole lot of things including the outright stealing of money meant for equipment for the army, inflation of contract, diversion of money for soldiers’ welfare, money for the rehabilitation of barracks and military facilities and many other corrupt practices.

In March 2016, the committee, predominantly made up of retired military officers, had summoned 292 retired and serving top army officers including Messrs. Dambazau, Ihejirika and Minimah.

Last August, Buhari directed the national security adviser, Mohammed Mongonu, to set up a 13-member investigative committee on the procurement of hardware and munitions in the Armed Forces from 2007.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, stated that the investigative committee’s mandate is to identify irregularities and make recommendations for streamlining the procurement process in the armed forces.

The establishment of the investigative committee was in keeping with President Buhari’s determination to stamp out corruption and irregularities in Nigeria’s public service, Adesina said.

“It comes against the background of the myriad of challenges that the Nigerian Armed Forces have faced in the course of ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the Northeast, including the apparent deficit in military platforms with its attendant negative effects of troops’ morale.

“The committee will specifically investigate allegations of non-adherence to correct equipment procurement procedures and the exclusion of relevant logistics branches from arms procurement under past administrations, which, very often resulted in the acquisition of sub-standard and unserviceable equipment,” the statement said.

In January, Buhari ordered the arrest of the former chief of air force, Adesola Amosu, and other top officers of the Nigerian Air Force after an interim report of an inquiry into the procurement of equipment uncovered widespread diversion of funds and fraud.

Those indicted by the report were former national security adviser, Sambo Dasuki, former chief of defence staff, Alex Badeh, and another former chief of air staff, Mohammed Umar. All of them and other top officers are facing corruption charges in court.

“The procurement processes were arbitrarily carried out and generally characterized by irregularities and fraud,” the panel said. “In many cases, the procured items failed to meet the purposes they were procured for, especially the counter insurgency efforts in the North East.”

“A major procurement activity undertaken by ONSA for NAF was that concerning the contracts awarded to Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux (SEI) Nig Ltd.

“Between January 2014 and February 2015, NAF awarded 10 contracts totalling Nine Hundred and Thirty Million, Five Hundred Thousand, Six Hundred and Ninety US Dollars ($930,500,690.00) to SEI Nig Ltd.

“Letters of award and End User Certificates for all the contracts issued by NAF and ONSA respectively did not reflect the contract sums. Rather, these were only found in the vendor’s invoices, all dated 19 March 2015,” it said.

The panel said some of the award letters contained misleading delivery dates suggesting fraudulent intent in the award process. The observed discrepancies are in clear contravention of extant procurement regulations.

“The SEI contracts included procurement of two used Mi-24V Helicopters instead of the recommended Mi-35M series at the cost of One Hundred and Thirty Six Million, Nine Hundred and Forty Four Thousand US Dollars ($136,944,000.00).

“However, it was confirmed that the helicopters were excessively priced and not operationally air worthy at the time of delivery. A brand new unit of such helicopters goes for about Thirty Million US Dollars ($30m),” it noted.

Furthermore, the helicopters were delivered without rotor blades and upgrade accessories.

“Additionally, the helicopters were undergoing upgrade while being deployed for operation in the North East without proper documentation.
It was further established that as at date, only one of the helicopters is in service while the other crashed and claimed the lives of two NAF personnel.

“The Committee established that ONSA also funded the procurement of 4 used Alpha-Jets for the NAF at the cost of Seven Million, One Hundred and Eighty Thousand US Dollars ($7,180,000.00). However, it was confirmed that only 2 of the Alpha-Jet aircraft were ferried to Nigeria after cannibalization of engines from NAF fleet.

“This is contrary to the written assertion of the former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal AN Amosu to the former NSA that all the 4 procured Alpha-Jets aircraft were delivered to the NAF.

“The non-militarisation of the Alpha-Jets made them unsuitable for deployment to the North East and they are currently deployed only for training at NAF Kainji.

“Furthermore, the procurement of the Alpha-Jets was contrary to the recommendation of the assessment team. The Committee found that the conduct of Air Marshal Amosu was deliberately misleading and unpatriotic,” the panel said.

Shocking! Senator Kidnapped on His Farm by Gunmen in Cross River...See Details

Ben Ayade, the governor of Cross Rivers State

Senator Patrick Ani, a Third Republic lawmaker, has been kidnapped by gunmen.

According to ThisDay, Ani, who represented Cross River South Senatorial District on the platform of the defunct National Republican Convention (NRC), between 1991 and 1992 was kidnapped in his farm in Akpabuyo near Calabar on Wednesday.

Ani, who is the younger brother of former Nigeria’s finance minister, Anthony Ani, was allegedly picked up without any resistance from his farm by gunmen suspected to be militants that have been terrorising the southern part of the state.

Though the police in the state said they have no information about the kidnapping of Ani, it was gathered that a team of policemen went to his farm hours after information started filtering into town to the effect that he had been kidnapped.

It is strongly believed that the visit to his farm was in connection with the kidnapping of Ani who authored the “Fourth Force,” a discourse on current issues in Nigerian politics and nation-building, which regularly appeared as advertorial on several national newspapers.

Attempts to get any member of his family to comment on the kidnapping of the senator did not materialise, but a source, one of the workers in the farm, who pleaded not to be mentioned because he was not instructed to comment on the issue, confided that Ani was kidnapped on Wednesday in his farm in Akpabuyo, and added that a team of policemen visited the farm hours after the incident and interviewed the workers on the matter.

However, when contacted on the issue, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the state, Irene Ugbo, promised to make enquiries on the issue and get back to THISDAY. But up until press time, she never did.

Omg! You Won't Believe What Happened After a Dog Licked the Face of a 70-year-old Woman

Omg! You Won't Believe What Happened After a Dog Licked the Face of a 70-year-old Woman

A woman has had a most devastating experience after a dog innocently licked her face leaving her in a really bad shape.

The woman, a 70-year-old, contracted blood poisoning after her dog licked her face.

She was admitted to the emergency room with seizures and organ failure when she contracted the blood poisoning after her Italian greyhound licked her face while she was playing with it.

According to NY Daily News, the saliva transferred from the pooch smooch resulted in blood poisonings in the unique case confirmed in the BMJ Case Reports medical journal.

Sepsis derives from the bacteria, Capnocytophaga canimorsus, and is normally transferred through dog bites.

According to the National Institute of Health if sepsis develops into septic shock there is a potential mortality rate of 50%.

“The prevalence of contracting sepsis from a dog lick is rare,” said Dr. Scott Simon, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Animal Hospital of Chelsea. “However it’s important that owners don’t intentionally exchange saliva with their dogs especially if they are undergoing chemo therapy, have AIDS, are pregnant or are elderly.”

According to Dr. Simon, your dog is more likely to give you ringworm, scabies or parasites.

After four days of intravenous antibiotics and months of thyroid hormone replacement and outpatient treatment the woman has been symptom free for about a year.

We Will Kill Buhari and His Daughter - Niger Delta Militant Leader Finally Unveils Face in Video Message

We Will Kill Buhari and His Daughter - Niger Delta Militant Leader Finally Unveils Face in Video Message

Ogoneoghochukwu

An alleged leader of a top Niger Delta militant group has threatened President Muhammadu Buhari and his family with death in a video message that has been trending on social media.

Nigeria has been battling with the problem of renewed issues of Niger Delta militancy in the year 2016 due to a variety of problems mixed with politics. A leading Niger Delta militant group known as the Niger Delta Avengers have been leading the race in the destruction of oil facilities in the South-south region which has threatened the mainstay of the Nigerian economy.

Some militant groups have called on the halt of the ongoing anti-graft war by President Muhammadu Buhari and also the release of prominent members of the People's Democratic Party like Sambo Dasuki and others as a condition for peace.

Other groups called for the unconditional release of the founder of the Independent People of Biafra and separatist leader, Nnamdi Kanu who has been incarcerated by the Federal Government with charges of terrorism and treason slammed on him.

Other armed groups advocate for a development programme for the deplorable Niger Delta region which has been degraded by oil spills and fire outbreaks due to decades of oil exploration by multinational companies who have failed to adequately compensate the host communities.

This brief narrative above leads us to another strong threat to the President by a Niger Delta militant group leader from Orogun in Delta state named Ogoneoghochukwu.

This audacious Nigerian bared his face in a threatening video where he reiterated his plan to kill the Nigerian President and his most popular child, Zahra. Like other groups, he is calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu.

The young man who wore a black pair of sun glasses and assumably read slowly from a written statement sounded firm in his words. The viral video came with a short caption below:

''Buhari has just started a fight that he can not finish, We warned him! ...The unarmed Biafrans you are sending your army to kill are innovative, they are intellectuals, they are warriors. They hardly start up something but when they do, they don't go back. We are Biafrans!!!, We are the avengers!! We will come for you!! Those against Biafra freedom wait for us!!''

Ex-Ghanaian president, Rawlings canvasses global campaign for return of Nigeria’s stolen loots

Ex-Ghanaian president, Rawlings canvasses global campaign for return of Nigeria’s stolen loots

Jerry Rawlings

Former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings, who decisively fought corruption in the West African country, has called for a global campaign for the return of Nigeria’s stolen funds stashed away in developed countries.

While requesting the international community to spearhead the initiative in a manner similar to the advocacy for the release of the kidnapped Chibok girls – #BringBackOurGirls, he charged developed countries to pay more than lip-service to the return of the funds to Nigeria and some other countries.

Rawlings told The Guardian in Ghana that “The high-level London conference on corruption offers an opportunity not only for countries in Africa and the developing world to revise and enhance their strategies for combating corruption, but also for developed countries whose banks have served as a safe haven for stolen wealth from Africa and elsewhere to repatriate those funds.

“I also implore the international community to join the chorus for the return of the loot, especially to a country like Nigeria while she enjoys the leadership of a proven man of integrity.”

The anti-corruption crusader went on to slam the developed countries who organise anti-corruption workshops with no concrete action to address issues that concern them.

His words, “Let us stop this support and mere conference of words and follow up with serious deeds. The commitment to corruption should work both ways. Developed countries cannot continue to harbour illegally-acquired funds from Africa and expect the latter to successfully stem the source of corruption.

“If we could transmit the integrity from our culture and various languages into the Western language and behaviour we’ve adopted, we could end up restoring the needed level of integrity to create a more civilised behaviour. In other words, we will be restoring integrity and credibility back to the spoken word.

“Let me speak about these characters corrupting us and sending our loot into their economies as part and parcel of their capitalist programme. When you begin to speak up, they get nervous. They resent and they don’t like nationalists, pan- Africanists. When the time comes, they would sacrifice you and keep your loot.

“Let’s put pressure on those African governments to bring those stolen monies out. Obama and his friends should give them sleepless nights just like the way we handled the Chibok girls’ issue. Let’s go beyond roundtable meetings. The Commonwealth should be made to serve a better purpose. This calls for a loud noise.

“From London to Switzerland, they are holding on to these stolen monies with impunity. More pressure is needed from all angles. Obama, the whole lot of them should pitch in and not do what they are doing in South America, in Brazil. Some of us can see through it.

“When they have leaders with socialist inclinations, they would want to rout them out of office the way it is happening over there. No, that is not good enough. We can see through it. It is a pity.”

Alex Otti should be declared Abia Governor not Ogah; court judgement was an error

Alex Otti should be declared Abia Governor not Ogah; court judgement was an error

Dr. Alex Otti

The Abia State Chapter of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has expressed displeasure over the court ruling that declared first runner up in the 2014 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship primaries in the state, Dr Uche Ogah as replacement for the embattled State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu.

It is recalled that Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja had last week sacked Ikpeazu as governor of the state over tax evasion.

Justice Abang had ordered the Independent Electoral Commission, INEC, to issue certificate of return to Ogah which was done.

In its reaction to the ruling, APGA called for the declaration of its candidate in the election, Dr. Alex Otti, as the duly elected governor of the state.

This was contained in a statement signed by the party’s, state Chairman, Rev. Augustine Ehiemere.

According to Ehimere, the court’s decision to sack Ikpeazu was a welcome decision, but should not have declared Ogah as governor because he did not participate in the actual gubernatorial poll.

Ehimere said, “We humbly disagree with the consequential order by the court which directed for the swearing in of Dr. Uche Ogah as the governor. This order, which we consider as a huge error, is not only unacceptable to APGA, but untenable in Nigeria’s 2010 Electoral Act as amended, which forbids any person that did not take part in all the stages of an election from being declared winner.

“Since there was no record anywhere to show that Dr. Uche Ogah won the primaries of his party, the PDP, let alone partook in all the stages of the last governorship election in Abia State, his declaration as the governor by the court was strange and alien to the law.

“Our humble demand is that the appellate court, while upholding the Ikpeazu guilty verdict, should correct this huge error by issuing the right order, which is to declare the candidate that scored the highest lawful votes, Dr Alex Otti (APGA) as the governor.”

Unpaid Salaries: SERAP drags govs to ICC

Unpaid Salaries: SERAP drags govs to ICC

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has requested Mrs. Fatou Bensouda, Prosecutor, International Criminal Court to “you use your good offices and position to investigate allegations of collective punishment and crimes against humanity against tens of thousands of Nigerian workers as a result of non-payment of their salaries for several months.”

In the petition dated 7 July 2016 and signed by SERAP executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni the organisation said that “We are seriously concerned that non-payment of workers’ salaries by several state governments in Nigeria has made life impossible to live for the workers and families.

We also urge you to bring to justice anyone who is responsible for the inhumane acts committed against Nigerian workers and prohibited under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court to which Nigeria is a state party.” The petition reads in part:

“SERAP contends that severe deprivation and mental or physical health challenges faced by Nigerian workers as a result of the non-payment of their salaries fulfil the requirements of this provision.

This means that individual liability may attach to governors who continue to hide under the excuse of ‘limited allocations from Abuja’ to deny these workers the fruit of their labour.”

“The state governors ought to know that their actions and/or omissions would likely to cause serious physical or mental suffering or a serious attack upon the human dignity of workers whose salaries are not paid.”

“Non-payment of salaries for several months have reduced Nigerian workers to ‘bare life’, or life not worth living, thus taking away their human dignity. The inhumanity of the non-payment of workers’ salaries is illustrated by the serious threats this poses to the workers’ physical and mental health, and family life as well as their ability to contribute to the development of the country.
The non-payment of salaries has created an environment of powerlessness for several workers and perpetuated a system of impunity in many states.”

“Article 7(1)(k) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court criminalises other inhumane acts intentionally causing great suffering, or serious injury to body or to mental or physical health. The treatment of many workers in several states reaches the level of ‘inhumane acts’ covered under this provision.”

“Serious and systematic levels of inhuman and degrading treatment have expressly been recognised as qualifying as other ‘inhumane acts’.

The same applies to the deprivation of adequate standard of living of thousands of workers such as adequate food, shelter, and medical care as a result of the non-payment of their salaries.”

“In the present case, the inhumane acts include non-payment of salaries of workers; failure of governors to use their executive authority to ensure a viable and corruption-free state, failure to provide the necessary administrative, financial and political conditions to facilitate prompt and timely payment of workers’ salaries.”

“To the extent that these acts expose tens of thousands of workers to inhumane acts while denying them the ability to challenge the legality of the action by the state governments, the acts can only be seen as a course of conduct involving the commission of inhumane acts.”

“SERAP believes that the non-payment of salaries of workers amounts to a serious attack on human dignity covered in the definition of ‘other inhumane acts’ under the Rome Statute, and fit within the ICC’s mandate. The gravity of non-payment of workers’ salaries for several months should not be dismissed a priori as lesser than that of the radically egregious acts the ICC has so far prosecuted.”

“SERAP argues that to deprive workers of their salaries is to deprive them of their livelihoods and basic necessities to the right to life and human dignity, and to and cause them suffering of sufficient gravity and severity comparable to enumerated acts of crimes against humanity under article 7 of the Rome Statute.

Because no person can live without the means of living, the non-payment of workers’ salaries has affected individuals’ well-being and prevented them from enjoying basic necessities of life and caused great suffering to them and their family members.”
“International human rights law requires states to protect the rights of workers including to timely payment of salaries.

The ICC can and should exercise its mandates under the Rome Statute to enforce these internationally recognized human rights by holding individual governors accountable for the crimes against humanity committed against many Nigerian workers.”

“Nigerian workers have for many years been victims of particularly heinous violations of international human rights law caused by massive looting of public treasury and mismanagement by high-ranking public officials.”

“SERAP is seriously concerned that several state governments in Nigeria are failing and/or refusing to pay workers’ salaries, amounting to billions of naira in arrears. The state governments that have failed and/or refused to pay workers’ salaries include: Bayelsa, Benue, Bauchi, Osun, Rivers, Oyo, Ekiti, Kwara, Kogi, Ondo, and Plateau states.”

“SERAP also contends that the gross violations of human rights and deplorable standard of living of many workers and their families in several states of Nigeria are grave and therefore suggest reasonable grounds justifying a preliminary
investigation by the ICC Prosecutor.”

“Alongside investigating mass atrocity, the prosecutor should seek to investigate those crimes such as gross, systematic and widespread violations of workers’ right to timely payment of salaries that fall under the Rome Statute provision on “other inhumane acts” but remain unacknowledged as grave violations of human rights.”

“Investigating violations of workers’ right to timely payment of salaries will allow the ICC to realise a broad notion of complementarity, as it will enable the Prosecutor to provide justice to the workers that many of the states in Nigeria are unwilling or unable to protect.”

Oduah Threatens Fire, Prepares to Sue SaharaReporters Over Alleged Defamation

Former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah

A fierce legal battle between Stella Oduah and SaharaReporters is about to begin after the former minister accused the media house of publishing a false story to defame her name.

A serious legal battle between former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah and online media platform, SaharaReporters is about to kick off.

This is coming after the senator on Thursday, dismissed as false and baseless, allegation that N2.5billion was traced to the bank account of her housemaid.

In a statement by her Head of Communication, Francisca Onyeisi, she maintained that the allegation which she said was contained in a report by an online media outlet, was aimed at tarnishing her public image.

While challenging the online media outfit to disclose the identity of the unnamed housemaid, Oduah, said she never at any time, tried to have a meeting with Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Magu.

The Senator said she would institute a legal action against the media outlet over the “malicious publication”.

“We also want to state that while the online platform, well known for its penchant lies and spurious allegations may have made another calculated attempt to taint the enviable record and achievements of the distinguished Senator who had made a mark in Oil/Gas and Agricultural businesses before joining politics, we therefore challenge Sahara Reporters to produce evidence of the imaginary account of the supposed housemaid to members of the public.

“We would like to state unequivocally that this report is totally false, baseless and has no sense in it, in the first place, Senator Oduah has no female domestic staff, in the second place what would be the sense in putting such money in a personal account, is it for savings or concealment? Either of which makes no sense no matter how big the person is.

“We are confident to say that the report did not by any imagination arise from EFCC because the EFCC of today we know are diligent and works with facts.

“We are convinced that the source of the report must be the handiwork of some mischief makers who have not hidden their determination to bring Senator Oduah down by every means.

“They succeeded in pushing her out of government but failed to stop her from winning her election to the Senate. In the same vain, they have continued to pursue her through the court to see if they can root her out.

“Senator Oduah is one of the few senators who after one year in office is still battling with pre-election matters in court."

A former driver to renowned Living Faith Church Bishop, David Abioye has converted from Christianity to Islam.

Celebrating his thirteenth Jumaat as a Muslim, the Muslim convert said he has adopted a new name, Ismail Haruna.

Ismail formerly known as Nicholas Martins said he is happier as a Muslim than he was as a Christian.

“My former name was Nicholas Martins but I converted to become a Muslim,” Ismail said.

“I was converted at Games Village, Abuja, I am really happy to be a Muslim (laughs excitedly),” he said.

He said he made the decision to drop Christianity after an incident relating to finance mismanagement at the Living Faith, Garden of Faith Church in Kaduna, Kaduna state.

Although he did not give details into the crime, Ismail told NAIJ.com he was convinced to drop Christianity when he sacked from his job for accepting doing wrong.

“I was a driver to bishop Abioye in Winners, I started working in Canaan Land in 2001 and I worked for five years.

“Something happened and they said that when you say the truth and the same truth will set you free,” Ismail said.

He said: “But, I was the only person that rose up and said this is what happened and this is the truth.”

Ismail said to his surprise after telling the truth – which was expected to save him – he was laid off alongside two other colleagues of his that were truthful.

“They  laid us off and said we should stop working in the ministry.

“And I now discovered and said if I am telling you the truth and you are not setting me free and other people that I know that did what we were doing that was not good,” he said.

He said all the other people who committed the same crime retained their jobs after swearing with the bible and denying the crimes.

“Even today, I know they are there; they left them there and we that said the truth you refused allowing us continue with our jobs.”

Ismail said the incident made him move to Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city.

He told NAIJ.com said he had to suffer for about nine years before he could get another job to earn a living.

“I now converted to a Muslim because of what happened,” he added.

He added: “From 2004 till this year, I was not going to church again because I was just alone thinking.”

He said he felt disappointed and his mind was completely made up the moment the truth failed him.

During the period he started the new job, he began to admire the lifestyle of his employer. “When I saw him, I knew that this man is really doing what God wanted us to do,” he said.

“Because there are many things that I am seeing now that I was not seeing before that I did not even know about.

“I was born and brought up in the north, I spent like 28 years there, grew up there but when I came to Abuja, I started practising Islam and got converted,” he said.

Speaking about his new religion, Ismail said he was very happy to be among Muslims in Abuja on his first fasting as a Muslim.

“This is the first time I am doing a fasting as a Muslim and this is the first time I am worshipping as a Muslim on this holy prayer ground (laughing),” he said.

He said he was convinced he is at the right place.

He further called on all especially Christians to be weary of people who claim they are trutful than people who are able to own up to their wrongdoings.

FCT Secretariat Ordered To Account For Two-Year Revenue

FCT Secretariat Ordered To Account For Two-Year Revenue

Dr Babatope Ajakaiye

Permanent Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr Babatope Ajakaiye have ordered the administration of the Social Development Secretariat to account for all the revenues accrued from a cinema and all the shops it has administered for two years.

Dr Babatope gave the order when he paid an unscheduled visit to the complex as he also ordered immediate closure of the cinema hall following the perceived poor accountability by the management of the complex.

The secretariat, like its counterparts, has remained without a Secretary since the current Federal Government came to power, leaving its administration in the hands of career civil servants, with myriads of challenges.

The Permanent Secretary During his visit, vowed to audit the revenue accruable from the cinema and all the shops administered by the Secretariat in the last two years and also probe the lease agreements for all the shops with a view to ascertaining that all monies collected were duly paid into government coffers.

“The cinema hall that is said to have been leased out is now closed down with immediate effect. We are going to check the agreement that was signed very thoroughly.

“As for the shops, we are not going to close them down, but we want to see the agreements of those that are renting the shops and we are going to audit what has been paid and who has been collecting the money.”

According to him, the administration decided to beam its searchlight on the Social Development Secretariat because of its poor revenue profile.

The Permanent Secretary reaffirmed the commitment of the FCT administration under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello, to block all financial leakages in the system in line with the change mantra of President Muhammadu Buhari.

He stated that due to the dwindling revenue occasioned by the global slump in oil price, prudent management of scarce resources by the present leadership is what has kept the system afloat.

VERY CRUCIAL!!! Governor Aregbesola Renews Advocacy For Use Of Mother Tongues In Schools

Governor Aregbesola Renews Advocacy For Use Of Mother Tongues In Schools

Governor Aregbesola

The need for Africa and Africans to rediscover themselves, look inwards and adopt home-grown solutions to their problems was central to the various interventions by speakers at the opening of the 2016 Toyin Falola International Conference (TOFAC) on Africa and African Diaspora, hosted by the Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State on Monday.

Governor Aregbesola who was a guest speaker at the event in his address, entitled ‘Africa Must Look inwards’, said it was regrettable that Africa “is more a mystery to Africans than non-Africans.

“Continental Africans are hardly conscious of their ‘Africanness, and therefore take their identity as Africans for granted.

“it is this ignorance of ourselves that fuels the discrimination and negativity” that Africans consistently suffer on the world stage.”

The governor praised the choice of the theme of the conference, ‘Africanity’, as appropriate—which he said is about the distinct African identity and Africa’s contribution to humanity in the face of increasing marginalization of the continent in global events.

Aregbesola recalled, with pains, that Africa, some centuries ago, was at par with the best Europe had to offer in science and metallurgy; yet today, not only has the continent regressed; but has become a consumer rather happily consuming what other continents produce.

However, the governor is confident the continent can retrace its steps.

“Our mineral resources should be developed to feed our industries, instead of feeding Europe and American industries. Our education should be reviewed. Our educational institutions should be made to produce graduates equipped with life-sustaining skills and ready to stand on their own, instead of looking for jobs.”

Aregbesola, therefore emphasised more than anything else, the need to reconsider the language of instruction in Nigerian schools as he said the country should take example from from the Japanese and the Chinese, who teach in their native languages and are making phenomenal progress in science and technology.

Nigeria is moving forward, says Oyedepo

Nigeria is moving forward, says Oyedepo

David Oyedepo, presiding bishop of the Living Faith Church (LFC) worldwide has described Nigeria as a country that is moving forward, in spite of its present economic challenges.

Oyedepo said this in Jos, Plateau state capital, when he addressed both local and international assembly of the church workers in a broadcast on Thursday morning.

He told the workers that both the nation and the church were in a period of revival and that sacrifices would have to be made.

The bishop said that the era of private universities – championed by the church – came to set standards and right moral codes in our educational system to make it thrive better, devoid of cultism and activism.

He noted that academic calendars of private universities had been maintained, even as lecturers and their students in conventional universities go on strike.

“Private universities are here to restore the glory of the nation; it is clear that something is brewing in Nigeria,” he said.

“Nigeria’s healing is taking place now, and the health of the nation is being restored now.

“We are pushing darkness back.”

He enjoined Christians involved in fostering the present revival of the nation by God through their prayers and work not to relent as they were entitled to rewards from the Lord.

N1.2b Arms Fund: APC, CNPP challenge Fayose to waive immunity

N1.2b Arms Fund: APC, CNPP challenge Fayose to waive immunity

Ayodele Fayose

The Ekiti state chapter of the All Progressives Congress and the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) and other anti-Fayose groups yesterday trooped to the streets of Ado Ekiti in protest
against alleged looting of the state’s commonwealth by Governor Ayodele Fayose.

The Coalition commended the action of the Economic and Financial Crimes(EFCC) for freezing accounts belonging and operated by Fayose which allegedly contain N1.2 billion slush fund

from the office of the National Security Adviser(NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki to fund the governor’s campaign in 2014.

Large retinue of policemen and men of the Department of State Security were deployed to provide cover for the mammoth crowd that attended the rally.

The placard-carrying protesters which comprise party leaders, students, youth groups, artisans and other like-minded individuals , marched from Fajuyi park through Okeyinmi and stopped at Ijigbo area where they were addressed by leaders of each group.

In what seems like a general consensus, the protesters passed confidence vote in the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and his anti-corruption war, challenging the EFCC to dig deep into the
finances of the State and prosecute whoever was indicted in the looting of the state’s treasury.

They chanted anti-Fayose’s songs to deride the way the governor had allegedly be looting the state, especially his alleged indictment in the N1.2 billion arms fund, alleged collection of kickbacks from
contractors handling various projects in the state to buy multibillion naira property in Lagos , among others.

The APC Acting Chairman in the state, Mrs Kemi Olaleye, expressed regret about how the immunity conferred on Governor Fayose in line with section 308 of the constitution, had been impeding his
prosecution for alleged embezzlement of funds.

“We are tired of immunity clause. Immunity has become impunity in Ekiti. We condemn Governor Fayose’s corrupt tendencies .Things must change. The EFCC must do its job and ensure that looters of Ekiti are brought to justice,”she said.

A statement presented by the CNPP Chairman in the state, Mr Tunji Ogunlola , challenged Fayose to waive his immunity and face prosecution over alleged involvement in N4.7 billion arms deal alongside former Minister of State for Defence , Musiliu Obanikoro and PDP Governorship
candidate in Osun State in the last poll, Mr Iyiola Omisore.

“On the issue of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, we ask the 17 members alleged to have falsified their certificates to submit themselves for prosecution. It is very unfortunate that their primary
roles have been abandoned for Fayose’s defence.

“We also plead with the federal government not to release bailout for payment of salary to Governor Fayose. The Federal Ministry of Finance should pay into workers’ accounts directly, because we have lost confidence in the government. The previous N9.6b bailout should be
probed.

“We want to commend the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris and Director General of the DSS, Mr Lawal Daura for probing alleged political thuggery leveled against PDP government in Ekiti.

“We also want a special force be deployed to Ekiti to maintain peace in Ekiti State because our lives are no longer save .

“We pass confidence vote in President Buhari for fighting corruption and for all his developmental programmes”, he said.

A students’ representative, Com. Samuel Olaoluwa , commended the anti-graft agency for coming up with a comprehensive data of how Fayose allegedly looted Ekiti, saying nothing must be spared to ensure that all the monies are recovered and culprits prosecuted for Ekiti to move
forward.

“We must join the EFCC in the battle against graft. We should stop politicizing issues of graft because it affects every facet of the country. We must stop this act of impunity and return Ekiti to the
path of honour, glory and sanity”, he said.

UNBELIEVABLE! See What Happened After Stella Oduah Purchased $13 Million Oil Tanker.

UNBELIEVABLE! See What Happened After Stella Oduah Purchased $13 Million Oil Tanker.

SaharaReporters has exclusively obtained shipping and merchant vessel documents which show that the disparaged former Minister of Aviation Stella Oduah purchased and registered an oil tanker a few months before she was sacked by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

It will be recalled that Mrs. Oduah, now the Senator from Anambra State, was sacked by Mr. Jonathan in February 2014 following a series of exposes from SaharaReporters connecting her to a massive BMW vehicle scandal. In recent days, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) discovered that N2.5 billion was put in a bank account under the name of Mrs. Oduah’s housemaid.

The EFCC said “Senator Oduah apparently opened the account with her housemaid’s name, image, and details without the housemaid knowing about it.”

This latest scandal, which involves the unexplainable purchase of a massive oil tanker, is connected to Mrs. Oduah’s company Sea Petroleum and Gas Company Ltd. This company purchased the vessel SEA STERLING, with call sign 5NXF, and later registered it in the Port of Lagos.

According to the Certificate of Classification, by the International Classification Society, the SEA STERLING was certified and entered in to the Bureau Veritas Register Book as having unrestricted navigation.

The vessel, also listed as an Oil tanker on the classification document, was stated as being owed by Sea Petroleum and Gas Company Ltd with a Nigerian flag. It was given the registration number 14565J and valid until May 23rd 2017.

The certificate was issued on August 26th, 2013 at Lagos and later obtained compliance and insurance accreditation in September 2013.
Mrs. Oduah’s oil tanker, affixed with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) number 9607318, is said to be able to freight 4,126 gross tons.

SaharaReporters found that on August 26th 2014 the Sea Sterling was attacked by pirates off the coast of Bayelsa State but were repelled by security onboard.

A SaharaReporters investigation into the vessel found that it was built in 2012 and is 112 meters long.

One maritime expert, who SaharaReporters provided the specifications of Mrs. Oduah’s oil tanker to, told our correspondent that “a 6,000 dwt [dead weight] product tanker built in 2009 was recently sold for $12.2 million. So a similar sized tanker built in 2012 [like Stella Oduah’s] would probably be valued between $13 and $15 million.”

He added that, “this assumes a willing buyer and a willing seller and also depends on the vessels’ condition and the shipyard it was built.”
Mrs. Oduah was not immediately available for comment on how her company was able to afford this oil tanker.

Wabara, Orji, Ogbulafor are fake leaders – Abia elders, monarchs demand Ogah’s swearing-in

Wabara, Orji, Ogbulafor are fake leaders – Abia elders, monarchs demand Ogah’s swearing-in

A cross-section of Abia State leaders, including traditional rulers, have called for the immediate swearing-in of the governor-elect of the state, Dr Uche Ogah.

In a communiqué read at the end of their meeting in Umuahia, leader of the group and traditional prime minister of Ibeku Kingdom, Chief Uche Akwukwaegbu, said Ogah is the man they want as Governor.

The forum “frowns at the negative reactions of some reactionary forces who see the Abuja High Court and INEC decision as hasty, as people who are used to disobeying court orders, which President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is fighting hard to change.

“This forum views the attitude and reaction of the Adolphus Wabara-led Abia Concerned Elders as that of people who are yet to cue into the President Buhari change mantra.

“The public is advised to disregard the information contained in the communiqué as sponsored by those who have contributed in no small measure to the collapse and stunted growth of our dear Abia State.

“This forum would not have responded to the communiqué, as published in the media by the so-called Concerned Elders, if not for the falsehood, distortion of facts and misleading effects on the people as contained in their so-called communiqué.

“As the true representatives of the people of Abia State, we condemn …the purported meeting in Abuja by some people from Abia State in the name of Concerned Elders of the state as their resolutions do not reflect in any way the reality on the ground.

“The true position of things in Abia is that all Abians – male and female, young and old, irrespective of clan, religion and political group – are yearning for Dr Uche Ogah, hence the hilarious and wild celebration that was witnessed on all streets and villages in the state.

“All interest groups, professional bodies, youths and women’s groups and community leaders passionately desire a turnaround in the state, and everyone is happy that a court of law has finally restored the mandate of the people’s choice, Dr Ogah.

“Consequently, we urge the Wabara-led acclaimed Elders’ Forum not to pretend that it does not know the right thing to do, which is to advise ‘former’ governor of the state to honourably quit and respect the rule of law.

“We, therefore, emphatically declare our unwavering support for the court ruling, demanding the swearing-in of Dr Ogah immediately, as the Abuja Federal High Court ordered.”

The communiqué, signed by 23 members, said the group would continue to stand on the side of truth and patriotism, as exemplified by the Abuja Federal High Court, by demanding the swearing-in of Dr Ogah as Abia State governor.

Abia Poly student kills landlord for interrupting him while having s*x

Abia Poly student kills landlord for interrupting him while having s*x

A student of the Abia State Polytechnic, simply identified as Abel, has killed his landlord in the Immaculate area of Aba, Abia State for interrupting him during love-making.

It was gathered that Abel, a final year student of the Department of Architecture, allegedly stabbed the victim in the stomach during a heated argument at the lodge.

According to reports, the victim had ordered that no female visitor was allowed to spend the night in the lodge.

The suspect was alleged to have breached the rule and was challenged by the landlord, which led to a physical combat between them.

In the ensuing scuffle, the suspect was alleged to have grabbed a knife and stabbed the victim in the stomach, before taking to his heels.

The landlord reportedly died on the spot.

An eyewitness said the landlord barged into the room and met Abel and his girlfriend naked, which caused the fight.

She said, “The incident happened around 9pm on June 29. The deceased had made a rule that no student living in the lodge should bring a lady to pass the night there. He also made it a rule that every visitor, be it male or female, must leave before night falls.

“However, the suspect brought home a female guest in the evening and both of them went inside his room. The caretaker of the lodge saw them and waited for them to come out, but they didn’t. He then put a call through to the landlord, who hurriedly went to the building around 9pm.

“On arrival, the landlord barged into the student’s room where he met both the lady and the student naked. Instead of excusing himself, he attacked the student with punches. The lady quickly grabbed a wrapper and ran out of the room into another student’s room in the lodge.

“As the confrontation continued, the student stabbed the landlord with a knife, put on his boxers and fled that night, leaving the landlord dead in his room.”

The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Nta Ogbonnaya, confirmed the murder, saying he could not tell what transpired between the suspect and the deceased.

He said, “Yes, there is a case of murder involving a student of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, who stabbed his landlord in the stomach. I cannot, however, tell what happened between them. I also don’t know the name of the landlord and the suspect. As I speak with you, the case file has been transferred to the SDCI and we are working with the school authorities to get the details of the suspect.

“I, however, want to advise him that he should submit himself to the police voluntarily. I assure that wherever he decides to go, we will get him and he will face justice.”
