Alleged travel ban: Fayose petitions UN, US, NHRC, others

Alleged travel ban: Fayose petitions UN, US, NHRC, others

The petition signed by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Kolawole Oluwawole, was submitted Tuesday in Abuja, to NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Professor Bem Angwe, who assured that his commission will investigate the petition.

The Deputy Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly, Segun Adewumi who submitted the petition, was accompanied by the Chairman, House Committee on Information, Gboyega Aribisogan and Chairman House Committee on Health, Dr Samuel Omotoso.

The petition reads: “We write to bring to your attention another impending infringement on the rights of the Governor of our State, Mr Ayodele Fayose and by extension the entire Ekiti by the Federal Government.

“A few weeks ago, our governor was reliably informed that President Mohammadu Buhari had directed that he should be banned from traveling outside Nigeria. This reliable information was to be confirmed through reports in two major national dailies on Sunday, May 29, 2016 titled; ‘2 govs under watch, face travel.

“From our findings, one of the governors being referred to is our own governor, Peter Ayodele Fayose and we wish to state like we have always done that we, the members of Ekiti State House of Assembly are with the governor on everything that he does.

“Even ordinary Nigerians do not require clearance from the Department of State Services (DSS) or any security agency to travel outside Nigeria unless in compliance with court order, and as at today, there is no court order placing travel restriction on our governor, Ayodele Fayose. Issues concerning Governor Fayose cannot even be entertained in any court by virtue of the immunity he enjoys as provided in Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“We however know as always that this latest plot is as a result of our governor’s critical stance on President Mohammadu Buhari’s government and its anti-people’s policies, and we make bold to say that no amount of intimidation, harassment and oppression will cowed the governor from exercising his fundamental rights to freedom of expression and to hold opinions as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended).

“We are aware that this is coming as a result of the failure of the President Buhari led APC government’s plot to use the DSS to coerce the House of Assembly members into the plot of removing the governor.

“We are also aware that plot to out-rightly take the governor ‘out of circulation’ cannot be ruled out as those advising President Buhari are said to be of the opinion that our governor has become a threat to his (Buhari) re-election bid and that everything must be done to ‘whip the governor to line’ before 2018.

“Going by the antecedents of the President Buhari-led Federal Government of Nigeria and the DSS under the President’s kinsman, Alhaji Lawal Daura, it is certain that there is nothing that cannot be attempted, no matter how unlawful.

“It should be recalled that this same DSS invaded the hallowed Chamber of the House of Assembly in our State, abducted our member, Hon Afolabi Akanni and kept him in detention for 18 days without access to anyone. Even when the court ordered that he should be released, the order was ignore. Up till today, no explanation was given for this arrest and detention.

“It should also be recalled that on April 20th, 2016, the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, in Suit No. FHC/AD/CS/7/2016 ordered the DSS to pay a sum of N5 million to Hon Afolabi Akanni as damages for what the court termed unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional infringement of his fundamental rights. Up till today, that judgment has not been obeyed by the DSS.

“It is therefore on the premise of display of arrogance and contempt for the laws of the country by the DSS under President Buhari that we elected to bring this latest plot to place Governor Ayodele Fayose on travel ban to your attention.

“It is worrisome that the federal government will consider the idea of compelling a sitting governor in Nigeria that enjoys Constitutional Immunity like the President to obtain clearance from the Director General DSS, who is an appointee of the President before travelling out of Nigeria.

“This to us is an affront on the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) more so that States, as federating units in Nigeria are not under the Federal Government, which itself is also a State and not superior to other federating units.

“Section 35 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) provides that; ‘Every person shall be entitled to his personal liberty and no person shall be deprived of such liberty,’ Section 39 (1) provides that; ‘Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impact ideas and information without interference,’ while Section 41 (1) provides that ‘Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof, and no citizen of Nigeria shall be expelled from Nigeria or refused entry thereto or exit therefrom.’

“Article 13 (1) of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to which Nigeria is a signatory provides that “Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the border of each State while Article 13 (2) provides that ‘Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and return to his country,’ ditto Article 12 (2) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

“By provisions of the Constitution of Nigeria, ordinary Nigerians do not require clearance from the DSS or any security agency to travel outside Nigeria unless travel restriction is placed by an order of the court, not to talk of State Governors that enjoy immunity just like the President and are not under the control of the President.

“Our question is; if Governor Fayose has become a threat to the security of Nigeria just because he criticises President Buhari and says the truth about his mis-governance of the country, what happens to Section 39 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which provided for freedom of expression and freedom to hold opinions?

“Most importantly, under a federal system of government, the states and national government both enjoy some autonomy, with sovereign power formally divided between the national government and the States such that each State retains some degree of control over its internal affairs.

“However, it appears that the laws of Nigeria are not important to the President Mohammadu Buhari led government and it has become once again necessary that we bring your attention to yet, another plot to subvert our rights as a State.

“We wish to recall that in 1984 when President Buhari was a military Head of State, late Chief Obafemi Awolowo was prevented from travelling outside Nigeria for medical treatment, thereby leading to his (Awolowo) untimely death in 1987.

“The international passports of late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade; late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero and late Obi of Onitsha, Ofala Akulalia Alphonsus Ogugua were also seized and they were restricted to their palaces just because they travelled to Israel for business.

“We therefore wish to state on behalf of Governor Ayodele Fayose that as an opposition figure, he cannot be cowed by this pettiness from the presidency.”

MEANWHILE… Did Fayose just commend Buhari?

MEANWHILE… Did Fayose just commend Buhari?

The unimaginable has happened: Ayo Fayose, governor of Ekiti state, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari – probably for the first time in his life.

Fayose, who had been criticising every move and every statement of Buhari before the 2015 presidential election, has praised the president for “embracing dialogue” with Niger Delta militants who have been bombing oil and gas pipelines since February.

In a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Fayode praised the president “for listening to wise counsel” in opting to negotiate with the militants.

The federal government announced on Monday that it would scale down military operations and send a delegation led by the national security adviser, Babagana Monguno, a retired major general, to dialogue with the militants.

“The Niger Delta region as at today is still the golden goose laying the golden eggs on which all other regions are surviving and it will be suicidal for military action to be sustained against the militants,” Fayose said.

He added a low blow, though, saying he was happy that “for the first time, the president took to advice and suspended military actions in the Niger Delta and opted to dialogue with the militants”.

Fayose, who famously placed a newspaper advert warning that Buhari was too ill to be president, is yet to comment on the ailment that has seen him travel abroad for treatment.

However, he said the president’s approach to civil unrests of any kind had caused more security problems in the country.

“The president must stop talking tough on issues that dialogue can resolve,” he said, adding that the “hardline” approach of Buhari had already cost Nigeria billions of dollars in revenue.

“If our daily crude oil production of 2.2 million barrels per day had been sustained, Nigeria would have been having savings in the Excess Crude Account by now,” he said.

“Crude oil bench mark is $38 per barrel while the oil is now being sold at $50 per barrel, meaning that we would have been having $12 per barrel saved in the Excess Crude Account.”

He urged members of the negotiation committee to see the assignment giving to them as one that is highly important to the
revival of the country’s economy, saying that they should not act in anyway that will suggest that they were not sincere.

Indian minister asks his country to ban Nigerians

Indian minister asks his country to ban Nigerians

Ravi Naik

Ravi Naik, a former minister in India, has asked his country’s authorities to impose a ban on Nigerians.

According to The Times of India, Naik made this statement while speaking to reporters.

“The Central government should ban Nigerians,” he reportedly said at a press conference.

Referring to Nigerians as “negroes”, the politician accused them of causing trouble “everywhere”.

“Even the Aam Aami Party leaders had a fight with Nigerians in Bengaluru,” he said.

“They create problems everywhere… We do not want Nigerian tourists.”

He accused some Nigerians in Goa, a state in the Asian country, of masquerading as students, demanding a probe into their activities.

Kiran Kandolkar, Goa spokesman, has demanded an apology from Naik over the controversial statement.

“Ravi Naik should tender an apology. The statements made by Naik are insulting and uncalled for,” he told reporters on Tuesday.

India is one of the countries which President Muhammadu Buhari has visited since he came to power.

During the trip, the Nigerian leader met with the country’s prime minister and other top government officials.

Both countries also pledged to strengthen their bilateral relationship.

Buhari also met with the Nigerian community there and assured them of his government’s commitment to their well-being.

Though Nigerians are used to being criticised all over the world, disparaging remarks like that of Naik is not a common occurrence.

Bill on Loans for Undergraduates Passes Second Reading in House of Reps

Bill on Loans for Undergraduates Passes Second Reading in House of Reps

Femi Gbajabiamila

A prominent lawmaker in Nigeria is sponsoring a bill to empower Nigeria students financially to enable them invest in businesses.

A bill seeking to make Federal Government to provide loan to students to pursue tertiary education passed second reading at the House of Representatives on Tuesday. Speaking on the bill, its sponsor, Femi Gbajabiamila (APC-Lagos), said that it was intended to provide students with easy access to funds for higher education.

Gbajabiamila said that a great population of Nigerian students would be enrolled for higher education if the bill scaled was successful.

He, therefore, canvassed for the establishment of Nigerian Education Bank. Gbajabiamila also advocated that the loans should be interest-free, saying “Nigeria is blessed with abundant natural resources to tap from and encourage quality education for future generations’’. According to him, education is a right and not a privilege for Nigerians. Students’ loans speak volume if a lasting legacy is to be bequeathed to future generations.

Contributing, Rep. Nnanna Igbokwe (PDP-Imo) said that passage of the bill would provide more opportunities for Nigerian students who were financially incapacitated to further their studies. “More opportunities would be given to young Nigerians who are intelligent but are having financial constraints to continue with their education," Igbokwe said.

The lawmakers unanimously endorsed the passage of the bill for the second reading through a voice vote. In his remarks, Speaker of the House, Mr Yakubu Dogara, commended members for their contributions and referred the bill to the Committee on Tertiary Education and Services for further legislative actions.

Heartland drag IfeanyiUbah to LMC over Ebele Obi’s transfer

Heartland drag IfeanyiUbah to LMC over Ebele Obi’s transfer

Heartland have written to the League Management Company (LMC), claiming that IfeanyiUbah FC, have infringed on fundamental transfer rules.

The Nnewi Warriors are interested in signing goalkeeper Ebele Obi from Heartland, in the mid-season window.

“We’ve written to the League Management Company because FC IfeanyiUbah breached procedural norms as it relates to players’ transfer,” Heartland spokesman Solomon Onu told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“The ideal thing which is enshrined in the football league books is that you first write the club indicating your intention to buy the player.

“Then, the club will now say they will sell or not. Or better still, they will tell you how much to pay and give you permission to discuss with the player.

“IfeanyiUbah did not do any of these. Instead, they went ahead to poach our player and the implication is that the player’s concentration and commitment could be impaired.

“So we have written to the LMC. We are expecting their response any moment from now. We did not place the player on transfer. This is modern day football. The era of impunity is over because we live and operate in modern time not in the jungle.”

Buhari neglected Utomi, Falae, Ezekwesili for ‘mosquito economic team’ – OPC founder, Fasheun

Buhari neglected Utomi, Falae, Ezekwesili for ‘mosquito economic team’ – OPC founder, Fasheun

Dr. Fredrick Fasheun

Founder of Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Dr. Frederick Fasehun has averred that Nigeria is presently having serious economic challenges because of President Muhammadu Buhari’s choice of a “mosquito economic team” in neglect of those who can advise him on how to run the economy.

Speaking on Wednesday in an interview with the Independent, Fasehun, who is the National Chairman of the Unity Party of Nigeria, UPN, said the president has done nothing in his first year in office, adding that the President is left with just three more years to either change those misadvising him or bring in fresh experts.

“Four years in the life of a country is a short time. I am appealing to every Nigerian not to breach the peace of the country. Out of the four years of Buhari’s tenure, he has about three years more, let us give him time and see what he would do right or wrong. So far, I have not seen what he has done right, but he has three years more to prove himself whether to change those who are misadvising him or to bring in fresh experts.

“I happen to know that one of the writers of economic channel that the present government should keep is Pat Utomi. Nigerians know that Utomi is a guru in all aspect of the economy. Unfortunately, when Buhari was compiling his cabinet, he left out the man who was a torch light to the administration.

“Should Utomi be left out in the economic team? Should people like Olu Falae, Oby Ezekwesili and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a natural team for the president be ignored? Unfortunately, he chose to go for a mosquito economic team and that is why we are having the problem we are facing today.

“The economy should not be a partisan thing; it is supposed to be a natural one. Let the good people of this country like the Balarabe Musas the Ciromas and the Umars continue to advise the government on the right path to go. I don’t want anybody to do anything that would disrupt the peace of the country but give the President the remaining time and see what he would do,” he said.

Allocate grazing land for our cattle – Fulani herdsmen beg Cross River Governor

Allocate grazing land for our cattle – Fulani herdsmen beg Cross River Governor

Fulani herdsmen in Cross River State on Wednesday urged the state Governor, Prof. Ben Ayade to allocate grazing land for their cattle.

Leader of the Hausa/Fulani community in the state, Mr Sani Baba-Gombe, who made the passionate appeal in Calabar, the state capital, explained that the major challenge facing herdsmen in the state was a grazing land, hence the need for the state government to come to their aid.

According to Baba-Gombe, the land if allocated will put an end to the crisis between farmers/ herdsmen in the state, adding that it would also stop herdsmen from encroaching into people’s farmlands in search of feed for their animals.

“We use to instruct our people to always ask for permission before entering into any land to graze. If I were to be a farmer, I won’t be pleased if any cattle come along to destroy my crops.

“If a grazing land is provided, the animals would not stray into farms and this would further prevent any future crisis between herdsmen and farmers in the state.

“All we are appealing for is a grazing land that is different from the farmlands; this would help us to stop encroaching into people’s farmlands in search of food for our cattle.

“We have also sensitised our people to always have a good understanding with their host communities,’’ he said.

I will do everything possible to protect oil facilities in Niger Delta — Buhari

I will do everything possible to protect oil facilities in Niger Delta — Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has promised to do all within his powers to ensure the security of oil installations in the Niger Delta region.

The President, who was represented by the Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir David Lawal, gave the assurance at a lecture organised by the Save Democracy Group Africa, to mark this year’s democracy day in Abuja on Tuesday.

Buhari’s assurance is coming at the heels of several attacks on oil pipelines by resurgent militant group, the Niger Delta Avenger, with Chevron Nigeria Limited being the worst hit.

According to Buhari, while he seeks a non-military solution to the vandalism and destruction of oil facilities in the Niger Delta region, he would not succumb to intimidation and blackmail by militants.

“You will agree with me that two major reasons why our economy is in such a deplorable condition is the slump in crude oil prices.

“It is also due to decline in production as a result of the recent upsurge in activities of criminals and saboteurs in the oil producing region.

“While the control of the selling price of our crude oil is not solely in our hands, the challenge of militancy, criminality and vandalism is solely within our control.

“I, therefore, wish to restate that I have directed all the nation’s security outfits to take all steps necessary to secure the oil facilities and other government assets in the Niger Delta region.

“While our doors are open to dialogue, political and non-military solution on the matter, this government will not succumb to intimidation and blackmail by criminal element, coming to inflict further unnecessary social and economic hardship on the citizens.’’

The President further urged those behind the attacks on oil facilities to desist from the act or face the consequences.

Let’s face it, life outside senate is suffocating, says senator

James Manager, a senator from Delta state, has called for a “special package” for ex-senators, saying that life outside the upper legislative chamber is suffocating.

Manager said this while eulogising the late Umar Hambagda‎, an ex-senator from Borno south senatorial district, on the floor of the senate on Wednesday.

He said that the late ex-senator was not well taken care of after he left the senate.

“Let’s face it, life outside the senate is suffocating,” he said.

In response, Senate President Bukola Saraki said that the senate would work out an internal mechanism of aiding ex-members.

‎Earlier, Ali Ndume, senate leader, had raised a point of order to announce the passing of Hambagda, who was in the fifth and sixth senate.

He said that the deceased was survived by a wife and 16 children.

Fulfill your campaign promises or risk revolution in Nigeria – Cardinal Okogie warns Buhari

Fulfill your campaign promises or risk revolution in Nigeria – Cardinal Okogie warns Buhari

Cardinal Okogie

Archbishop Emeritus of Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Anthony Cardinal Okogie has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to return to his campaign promises to Nigeria or risk a revolution.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Lagos, the cardinal claimed that one year after inauguration, the Buhari-led government has derailed from its promises to the people, stressing that the poor masses now roam about without proper guidance while majority are left in penury in the midst of plenty.

According to Okogie, “The swearing in of the APC government last year was perceived as a major milestone in the people’s quest for positive change and improvement in their quality of life. But a year later, thousands of workers are being laid off every day, the value of the Naira is falling drastically, while many states are owing their workers many months of unpaid salaries.”

Pointing out the high poverty level among the youths in the last one year of the current administration, the Cardinal warned that the Federal Government must tread softly with the Biafra agitators and Niger Delta Avengers, noting that there was so much poverty among the youth.

“There is a popular saying that to jaw jaw is better than to war war, I am aware that the Niger Delta Avengers have reeled out a number of conditions to be met before seizing further attacks on oil installations. I am equally aware that President Buhari has vowed to deal decisively with the militants.

“While condemning the disruption of our oil facilities under any guise, I equally want to, stress that the use of military force is not a solution,” noting that option of military would only aggravate the situation,” he said.

Many PDP members are defecting to newly formed PMP – National Chairman

Many PDP members are defecting to newly formed PMP – National Chairman

Chief Perry Opara

The newly formed Peoples Mega Party, PMP, has disclosed that many members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have joined its fold.

National chairman of the party, Chief Perry Opara, who made this claim at the inauguration of the party’s new national administrative headquarters in Abuja, on Tuesday, said the party had resisted attempts by moneybags from other political parties to hijack it.

Disclosing that some rich politicians had been approaching the party leaders with tempting offers to take over the party, he said he told them that the party was not for sale as the vision behind its formation was to have a platform that young Nigerians could use to contest elective offices in future.

Opara said: “Five days ago, a group of PDP members came here to say they are defecting to the PMP.

“PDP professionals’ forum has also declared for the PMP, while some aggrieved members of PDP stakeholders’ forum in Abuja also defected to the PMP.”

He, however, assured that the, “hidden powers and individuals behind the PMP will be unveiled in the next seven weeks,” to put to rest speculations over the sponsors of the new party.

PMP, which is seeking registration from the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as one of the recognised political parties in the country, also stated that some members of the Labour Party, LP, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, had made similar advances.

Reacting to the staggering amount charged by political parties in the country as nomination fees, Opara said: “We are going to reduce the cost of elections so that young professionals can have opportunity to contest.”

Governors owing salaries despite security votes, IGR are corrupt – TUC President

Governors owing salaries despite security votes, IGR are corrupt – TUC President

Comrade Bobboi Kaigama

President of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) Comrade Bobboi Kaigama, has expressed dismay over security votes for governors and other political office holders, describing it as an avenue for corruption.

At a press conference in Jalingo, Taraba State, yesterday, Kaigama, said while security votes were often diverted, most governors also do not make public, expenditure of their internally generated revenue.

Kaigama disclosed that the TUC was collaborating with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) to ensure that governors were made to account for the bailout funds released to their respective states by the federal government.

The TUC leader recalled that the first condition before states were created was that they should be able to pay their workers’ salaries with the internally generated revenue of their states.

“It is disheartening to note that in spite of billions of naira that monthly accrue to states from the federation account including their own internally generated revenue they cannot pay salaries,” he noted.

Kaigama called on the EFCC and the ICPC to prosecute all corrupt political office holders.

We will use force to subdue Niger Delta Avengers, not negotiation – Army

We will use force to subdue Niger Delta Avengers, not negotiation – Army

The Nigerian Army on Tuesday insisted that it will continue to use force until leaders of resurgent militant groups in the Niger Delta region are arrested.

It dismissed negotiation with the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers, which has launched several attacks on oil installations and weakened crude oil production in the region.

Represented by Brig.Gen. J. Hamakim, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.Gen. Tukur Burutai said this in Abuja while justifying the Army’s ongoing onslaught in Gbaramatu, Delta State.

During the conference on Tuesday, the Army was accused of failing to explore dialogue with the Niger Delta militants but resorting to the use of force, which the people said could lead to war in the region.

The Army was also accused, during the event, of attacking members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, who were allegedly demonstrating peacefully in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Monday.

Hamakim while reacting claims that the Army has refused to explore dialogue with militants said there was no sign that the Niger Delta Avengers’ members were ready for talks.

According to Hamakim, “I quite agree that dialogue is very important. But where it is not too obvious that the adversary is ready to come out and talk, you can also force such a person.

“I think that is what the Nigerian Army is trying to do. Yes, we don’t know the group’s leader, for now; that is the only option, possibly we have to bring the people out to know who you can talk with.”

The representative of the army Chief stated that the activities of the group has reduced the nation’s oil production to 1.1 million out of 2.2 million barrels per day.

Hamakim denied the claim that soldiers who were involved in the operations in Gbaramatu were killing innocent residents and raping women.

“We have done our investigation and nothing like that is happening,” he said.

He however, described the demonstrations by supporters of the Biafra struggle that left several people dead and others injured in the South East as violent.

“Remember that lives were lost; policemen were killed; some were thrown overboard and the military has rules of engagement.

“The rule of engagement is that if you feel threatened, you have the mandate to respond. What we can say is that that was not at all a demonstration that you can say was peaceful,” he added.

I gave Lagos banker fake special soap to get rich, defrauded him of N2.5m – Herbalist

I gave Lagos banker fake special soap to get rich, defrauded him of N2.5m – Herbalist

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 33-year-old herbalist, Seye Olufokunbi, who defrauded a Lagos banker, simply identified as Lekan.

Olufokunbi defrauded the banker to the tune of N2.5m after he asked him to pay for a ‘special soap.’

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Dolapo Badmos, on Tuesday paraded the suspect before newsmen at the command headquarters in Ikeja.

She said the suspect would be arraigned in court at the end of investigation.

Badmos advised members of the public to be wary of those they transacted business with.

“We are still hunting for the fleeing members of the syndicate and at the end, we will make them face justice,” the PPRO added.

In his confession, the herbalist said he told Lekan, who worked in one of the banks on the Victoria Island, that the soap, when kept in a box for two days, would produce a lot of money.

The money magic reportedly failed, leading to a petition to the state Police Command Rapid Response Squad, RRS, in February 2016.

Officials of the Command were said to have trailed and arrested Olufokunbi in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

Olufokunbi said he was initially selling herbs to Lekan before the banker told him to perform money ritual for him.

“I have known Lekan for a long time and he is my customer. He was initially patronising me for herbs for his ailment but he later approached me for money ritual, saying the money he was making as a banker was not enough for him. I said I could do it if he could give me N2.5m.

“He brought the money and I gave him a bar of soap. I told him to keep the soap in a box for two days, after which he should check the box and he would see a lot of money.

“He did that, but it failed, he then reported me to the police, who arrested me,” the suspect added, noting that he had been into the job since 2011.

“I don’t work alone, I have members. I got N500, 000 from the money the victim paid, while the rest of the money was shared among the group members.

“I was initiated into this job by my brother. My ex-wife, whom I divorced after a disagreement, is not aware I am doing this.

“I was doing this because after I finished studying Business Administration in 2002 in a polytechnic in Oyo State, I couldn’t get any good job,” the herbalist stated.

I don’t want your blood money – Immigration boss tells senior officers

Muhammad Babandede

Newly appointed Comptroller-General, C-G, of the Nigeria Immigration Service, NIS, Muhammad Babandede has told Zonal Coordinators and Comptrollers of the Service that he does not want their “blood money”, which he defined as ‘returns’ from “organized crime law enforcement.”

He stated this yesterday at the maiden briefing of comptrollers and other senior officers at the NIS headquarters in Abuja where the C-G unveiled his vision and agenda for the Service. Noting that indiscipline and corruption have become the order of the day, he described himself as a missionary for the realization of greatness for the NIS as well as a missionary of justice and fairness.

Babandede expressed worry over what Immigration officers are doing in liberated territories in the troubled Northeast, lamenting that, “heartless Immigration officers set illegal check points at hinterland to bully and extort money from citizens already devastated by Boko Haram insurgency.” He then declared that he will not accept the Service being turned to “the 2nd grade of Boko Haram”.

Promising to run a most efficient service delivery system in the history of the NIS, he vowed to make more leaders out of the officers, adding that he will empower and build the capacity of all officers at every level of service delivery.
