Rose Amanor

A woman has been nabbed at the airport as she tried to smuggle heroin into the United States while hiding them in dry fish.

A 64-year-old Ghanaian woman, Rose Amanor, was convicted for attempting to smuggle drugs into the US and sentenced to twenty seven months in prison by a New York City court.

According to the New York Daily News, Mrs Amanor was arrested at Kennedy Airport after disembarking on a flight from Amsterdam last year.

The search revealed she was travelling with three kilograms of heroin stuffed inside a haul of dry fish. She claimed her son duped her into carrying the bag into the city.

Her lawyers begged for mercy citing her advanced age and poor health, requesting a short sentence so she could return to Africa.

But Federal Judge Eric Vitaliano was not having it, saying she had told ‘incessant number of fishy stories’

“I find it totally incredible that Mrs. Amanor didn’t know what it was that she was doing" Judge Vitaliano said. “It certainly was a disrespect for the law, sitting in this courtroom and spinning this incredible tale under oath.”

The judge pointed out that if Mrs Amour  had not been intercepted, the drugs would have wreaked havoc on young people.

In court, Amanor, who could almost certainly speak English, said she couldn’t, and requested a Twi translator.

This was despite, as the Daily News put it: ‘that English is the national language of Ghana, and when she was arrested she was carrying two Bibles, a dietary nutrition plan, and other documents written in English, and had received numerous emails from her son written in English.’

Amanor begged the judge through the interpreter saying: “I am asking you to have mercy on me so I can go home to my family and enjoy whatever time I have left with my family'

Amanor has served about 13 months since her arrest  and will be deported to Ghana after serving her sentence.

Nigeria Joining Islamic Coalition Has Nothing to Do with Religion - Presidency Reacts

Geoffrey Onyeama

Minister of Foriegn Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has debunked claims that Nigeria joining the Islamic Coalition against Terror being led by Saudi Arabia, has a religious affiliation.

While speaking with State House Correspondence in Abuja today, March 7th, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, has debunked claims that Nigeria joining the Islamic Coalition against Terror being led by Saudi Arabia, has a religious affiliation.

We had earlier reported it here that in an interview with Aljazeerah, President Muhammadu Buhari, who is a Muslim from the Northern Nigeria, stated that Nigeria will join the Saudi Arabia led coalition of Muslim countries against terrorism.

His decision to join the coalition announced by Saudi Arabia last December, appears to have made-up after a meeting with the Saudi King, Salman Bin Abdul-Aziz.

Reacting to the mixed reactions from Nigerians, the minister said;

"What I say first of all is that you guys in the media have to be more responsible in the way you present news. First and foremost, get your facts right. It has nothing to do with religion as far as Nigeria is concerned.

"We have to look at what the objective is. We face terror challenges and it’s a global phenomenon. Unfortunately, the problem we have today is that some of the terrorists groups are claiming some of the things they are doing is in the name of a particular religion and it is clear to everybody that this is not the case which is obviously a concern to people of Islamic faith and Islamic countries that their religion should be so abused.

"So, there is naturally a tendency to show that this has nothing to do with Islam. Terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. Islamic countries, Islamic people want to be seen as being in the forefront of the battle against these terrorists to show also that it has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

"That’s what this is all about. So, we are supporting every move to achieve this, to disabuse people’s minds that some of these terrorists are speaking in the name of Islam or are Islamic or that there’s anything about Islamic teaching that somehow condones these barbaric actions.

"I think it’s something we should all get together and we should all support whoever is working towards it. And that’s what this coalition is for, to show too that we are a Muslim country, we are Muslims and these people do not speak for Islam, have nothing to do with Islam.

"Most of the victims of these people are Muslims if you look at it. So, that’s what it is. It has nothing to do with Nigeria, Christianity, Islam. I think the media should really get the main message across," he said.

Hope for Sickle Cell Sufferers as Scientists Discover New Medical Breakthrough

Hope for Sickle Cell Sufferers as Scientists Discover New Medical Breakthrough

This might come as good news for many sufferers of Sickle Cell Anemia as researchers have made what could be a stunning breakthrough to finding a cure.

Scientists at the haematology division at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia may have discovered a breakthrough in treating sickle cell anaemia. Speaking at the American Society of Haematology’s (ASH) annual meeting, the researchers put forward a new technique that hopes to reverse the effects of the condition.

Sickle cell anaemia is a genetically inherited blood condition where the recessive gene, typically hidden by its dominant equivalent in the parents, reappears in their offspring, in what is known as an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Should a parent have the condition, the likeliness of their child developing it is 50%. Should both parents only have the recessive gene, the likelihood decreases to one in four.

The mutation responsible occurs on the gene responsible for coding the beta-globin chain in haemoglobin, the compound that makes blood cells red and carries oxygen to respiring tissue, replacing one protein by another.

This seemingly innocuous swap means that the normally round and flexible red blood cell becomes rigid and sickle shaped. As a result they can become obstructed in the tiny capillaries within tissue, and carry less oxygen around the body. However, scientists have found a way of restoring fully functional red blood cells that could be used to treat the condition if they are able to transfer their laboratory cell culture findings to actual human tissue.

The technique is called “forced chromatin looping” according Dr. Jeremy Rupon, haematologist at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, during a press conference on their novel findings.

This procedure causes the production of foetal haemoglobin, a type of haemoglobin that is usually silenced soon after birth in preference of adult haemoglobin production. As foetal haemoglobin is unaffected by sickle cell anaemia, the researchers hope to use this reversal of a biological switch to restart foetal haemoglobin production, with the hope of treating the condition in patients. These findings are based on previous work by Dr. Gerd Blobel, who also worked on the current project, published back in the June 2012 edition of the journal Cell.

They discovered that the creation of a chromatin loop between the separated enhancer and promoter regions of the beta-globin gene leads to gene transcription, the process where DNA code is “read” and a copy is created to be sent to specialized areas in the cell to be produced and hence expressed.

And, thanks to Dr. Blobel and his team’s previous work, they knew how to cause the looping thanks to the molecule known as looping factor Ldb1 attached to a zinc finger protein, the latter allowing attachment at a specific site on the DNA strand.

Dr. Rupon and his team designed and genetically engineered a zinc finger protein to attach and force a loop at the site in the DNA strand responsible for producing foetal haemoglobin. The loop allows the reactivation of the gene, causing expression of the genetic code.

The cell cultures showed that this technique was effective in “reversing”, so to speak, the biological switch responsible for silencing foetal haemoglobin production. In the mice model, the researchers found that this zinc finger/Lbd1 compound was extremely effective in promoting embryonic beta-globin production, with the forced looping resulting in an 800-fold increase in transcription.

A similar result was found when they tested human adult red blood cells. These results are highly promising, and Dr. Rupon hopes to advance this research to clinical trials, with the hope of curing sickle cell anaemia.

In addition, this may be the first of many conditions to be treated in this manner, said Dr. Rupon, with a variety of haemoglobin conditions that could be solved by reverting to foetal red blood cells.

I regret collecting bailout fund from FG - Okorocha

I regret collecting bailout fund from FG - Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha yesterday regretted collecting the N26 billion bailout funds from the federal government.

He said the monthly deductions, which will run for the next twenty years, have drastically affected the allocation of the state.

Stating that the state was in dire financial strait, Okorocha explained after implementation of agreement with Labour, which left the state with 30 percent of the allocation, the salaries and entitlements of senior functionaries were slashed by 35%.

He debunked insinuations that the bailout funds were diverted or misappropriated.

The governor restated that the funds were used for payment of salaries.

According to him: “Before we got the bailout funds, the workers have started shouting about their salaries and we had to borrow money from Zenith bank to pay the salaries.

“So when the fund hit our bank, it was disbursed to several other bank accounts including the Government House Account to pay those that were not captured in the civil service”.

Reacting to the recent invitation of his Principal Secretary, Dr Pascal Obi, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged misappropriation of the bailout fund, Okorocha said there was no big deal about it.

“EFCC is free to investigate any allegation of fraud against anyone but that does not mean that the person in question is guilty.”

Dino Melaye Goes After Fashola, Begs Buhari to Takeover Ministry of Power

Minister of Power, Housing and Works, Babatunde Fashola

Controversial Senator Dino Melaye has landed is on the news again after calling for the sack of Babatunde Fashola and begging President Muhammadu Buhari to takeover the power sector and save Nigerians.

Controversial and firebrand Senator, Dino Melaye has taken a swipe at Minister of Power, Housing and Works, Babatunde Fashola as he advised President Muhammadu Buhari to take over the Ministry of Power as the substantive minister and urgently ensure the country’s power challenges are resolved.

By asking Buhari to takeover, Dino is calling for the sack of Fashola for not making any positive impact in the power sector.

This comes just some days after he took a swipe at Governor Adams Oshiomole for marrying a foreigner while there are many Nigerian women to choose from.

Melaye said his decision is informed by the epileptic and devastating condition the power sector has left many Nigerians which calls for immediate attention.

In a number of tweets, he made know his anger. He lambasted the government for increasing tariff when the supply of electricity is still epileptic and wondered if those Buhari are using actually are there to work for the people.

He urged Nigerians to put pressure on the government and the National Assembly to effect the needed change in the power sector.

President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe

The President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe was put on a tight rope after he was asked to name his successor and he nearly lost his cool threatening to punch the interviewer.

A local newsman incurred the wrath of 92-year-old president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe by asking him about his retirement plans. The answer was just as epic as the question.

In an extraordinary on-air outburst broadcast on state television, the controversial leader took exception to the presenter's questions about his future.

When asked about grooming a potential successor, Mugabe responded: "Why? I'm still here? Why do you want a successor?

"Do you want me to floor you with a punch for you to feel I'm still there?"

The crew behind the camera can be heard laughing, and Mugabe himself cackles to suggest it was all a joke.

Mugabe has led Zimbabwe since its formation in 1980 from the remains of white-ruled Rhodesia and has said he is not yet ready to step down. His people live in abject poverty while the elite enjoy extravagant lifestyle.
