FG Ready To Reduce Malaria Scourge – Expert

The Leader, Malaria Action Plan Team, Mr. Godwin Aidenagbon, yesterday said the federal government was ready to reduce malaria disease scourge.

Aidenagbon stated this in Ibadan during a courtesy call on the wife of the Oyo state Governor, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, by the Malaria Action Plan team.

According to the Malaria Action Plan team leader, as part of the moves towards reducing malaria scourge, all the mosquito nets that were previously distributed in 2013 are to be replace by the federal government as they will no longer be effective in keeping mosquitoes away from the family.

He maintained that to achieve this, “Nigeria is to go into partnership with USAID to give net replacements to the vulnerable across the country, saying that in Oyo state alone, 4.3 million nets would be distributed.”

The team leader urged Mrs. Ajimobi to help with the campaign, awareness programme as well as mobilisation of people to come out and collect the treated nets as well as to advocate and openly endorse the Nets as effective tools to eradicate malaria.

Speaking, Mrs. Ajimobi declared that there was the need to ensure reduction in the malaria scourge in the country, saying malaria “does not only kill pregnant women, nursing mothers, infants and children, but could also transform into other forms of ill-health such as blindness, paralysis, convulsion amongst others.”

She, however, assured the team of her maximum support and her willingness to collaborate with them in the distribution of mosquito treated nets to the people.

She said wives of local government caretaker chairmen would be co-opted to join the team and be net ambassadors in their various jurisdictions.
