The Police Service Commission (PSC) has said it will probe the sealing of the residence of former Kano State Governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, by the police in Kano.

Loyalists to former Kano State Governor,  under the auspices of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, took the Police Commissioner, Rabiu Yusuf, to the commission for alleged infringement on their rights to assembly.

The movement is asking the commission to investigate Yusuf for infringing on the rights of Senator Kwankwaso to discharge his responsibility to his constituents.

Kano Police Command sealed off the residence of the former governor, preventing him from carrying out a mass wedding for about 100 intending couples, which he began as governor.

Spokesman of the group and lawmaker Ali Madaki said it was unfortunate the police prevented Kwankwaso from organising the mass wedding, adding that as loyal members of All Progressives Congress (APC) and law abiding citizens, they had to seek the intervention of the Police Service Commission.

“Our leader tried to organise his constituency project as part of his mandate to the people. As we know, he is a serving senator with the highest population in terms of his constituency. But that project was cancelled by the police.

“We wanted to hold it on Saturday but they said the government had a programme that day. We wrote to them requesting that it be shifted to Sunday so that government can do its on Saturday.

“We told the couples to hold the wedding at their various places but come for their gifts but the were also blocked as police vans were everywhere and nobody was allowed to come in or out of the area.

“As citizens protected by the Constitution, and as people that respect the laws of this country, we do not want any breakdown of law and order. So, we felt it was necessary to come and lay our petition before you so you can resolve it amicably.

“We are citizens of this country and we know our right and privileges, we are also sure you will do what is right in the best interest of all,” Madaki said.

PSC Chairman Mike Okiro assured the Kwankwasiyya movement, which petitioned it, that it will investigate claims by the group.

Okiro promised to reach out to the Inspector General of police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris, as well as police authorities in Kano to ascertain the veracity of the claims of the Kwankwasiyya group.

His words: “Let me express my gratitude to you for the petition. I cannot do anything for now since you have levelled accusations, which border on breaches of fundamental human rights. I will have to listen to the other parties and investigate the matter.

“I assure you that action will be taken within a reasonable time frame regarding the petition.”

The House of Assembly yesterday ordered the removal of Kwankwasiyya inscriptions from public buildings in Kano metropolis and other local governments.

The directive followed a motion by Alhaji Baffa Babba-Dan-Agundi, member representing Kano Municipal and chairman, House Committee on Education.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the 40 members.

The House urged the 44 councils to comply with the order within one month.

It directed that the Kwankwasiyya inscriptions, linked to the former governor, be replaced with names of prominent citizens of the state.

Meanwhile, the development had heightened suspicion that the animosity between Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje and his predecessor had taken a new dimension.

The House had also on Wednesday screened a commissioner nominee, Hajiya Yardada Maikano-Bichi, whose name was submitted on Monday.
