Kidnapped Catholic priest rescued in Imo



The Parish Priest of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Umuola, Amaigbo, Nwangele local council area of Imo State, Rev. Fr. Francis Ugoo Egbebu, who was kidnapped last Monday, have been rescued by the police.



Confirming the development to newsmen in Owerri, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, a deputy superintendent of police, said that the priest has been rescued from his abductors.

“Yes, the Reverend Father was rescued and released yesterday (Thursday), following the relentless onslaught by men of the Imo State Police Command that stormed the hideout of the kidnappers”, Enwerem said.

Although the PPRO resisted the temptation of giving details of the operation, he however said that the police was still on the trail of the fleeing hoodlums.

“So far, no suspects have been arrested by the police. Full scale investigation into the incident is still going on. Our men are in full pursuit of the fleeing criminals”, the PPRO said.

Confirming the freedom of the Catholic cleric, the Parish Council Chairman, Engr. Adolphus Ogbonna, expressed profound gratitude to God, for making it possible for the priest’s abductor to release him unharmed.

in his own reaction, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze (Dr.) Nelson Nwosu, said he had been reliably informed about the release of Rev. Fr. Egbebu.

“I am very glad about it. Amaigbo community is happy about it. We are grateful to God that the incident didn’t turn out to be a complicated one. We are thankful to the police command for rescuing the priest”, Eze Nwosu said.

Continuing, the royal father commended the citizenry for ensuring that Amaigbo was saved from the embarrassment the incident would have caused the community.
